Panthers sack Tyrone May for Instagram post after Grand Final win

By News / Wire

An ill-thought out social media post has cost Penrith’s Tyrone May his NRL contract, with the premiership-winning club sacking the utility player.

May was forced to front Penrith’s board on Wednesday where it agreed to terminate his contract.

It came after the 25-year-old uploaded an Instagram post following the Panthers’ grand final win over South Sydney that made reference to his convictions for recording an intimate image without consent.

“As a club we understand our responsibilities to the game, our corporate partners, our members and fans, and the wider rugby league community,” Panthers chief executive Brian Fletcher said.

“The board observed due process in this matter and considered all relevant factors before reaching its final decision.

“Panthers will coordinate with the NRL to ensure Tyrone receives access to any support services he needs moving forward.”

The photo uploaded showed May alongside Panthers coach Ivan Cleary leaving Parramatta Local Court before his conviction.

The image was captioned with lyrics from Canadian rapper Drake which said: “And the dirt that they threw on my name turned to soil and I grew up out it. Time for y’all to figure out what y’all gon’ do about it. Love my brothers”.

He was fined $7500 by the NRL and was stood down by the Panthers before they tore up his contract on Wednesday.

May missed the 2019 season when stood down by the NRL as news of the charges emerged.

He was spared jail and handed 300 hours of community service in 2020 before being allowed to return to the Penrith squad.

He featured in their grand final loss to Melbourne in that year, before claiming a premiership ring in the gritty victory over Souths.

Pretty sure what May did was at the very top end of the serious scale, I believe the initial punishment was inadequate

sacking Nancy (NC - Nathan Cleary) - he'd be protected for all but the most serious of crimes by the NRL, club & old man, the Vaughan reference was about a club using the "disrepute" get out clause to offload the overpaid & underperforming.

I said I thought they would sack him and you said they definantley wouldn't so you know something I don't, not to sure how Vaughan is relevant though

no way would Penriff sack Nancy if he did the same thing. clubs use this as a means to get rid of the dead wood to free up the salary cap. Vaughan got the boot for hosting a bbq, but what was worse is how others attended it, all PV technically did was to go home. So all other guests at his bbq should have copped the same fine or worse as they made the concious effort to go there

The Clearys have demonstrated ever so clearly why they should not be allowed anywhere near management (leadership is out of the question!) in any guise, which is, of course, a feature not a fault at Penrith Rugby League Football Club. They cost the dopes about $2 million a year, $1 million each per year for three more! Expensive salary for fools who set about destroying what others have striven for on the very night it was won. I repeat my comment just below - Tyrone Junior's file ought to be handed to the Club's consultant lawyers to attend to his sacking too, without further comment. It won't be. Chairman O'Neill, the Board and the invisible CEO ought to be herded onto the Gus bus and taken somewhere far away, anywhere. Brandy Alexander is the only official out there with the wit and the integrity to speak against wrong as soon as it became evident.

“I’m not defending him.” Oh? Ha. Ha ha ha! Bwahahahahaha!   “a minor indiscretion like May’s tweet” Disingenuous much? Don’t bother responding – your time would be better spent consulting the NRL web site and reading “Women and girls”, to discover codes of conduct, rights and responsibilities – with coloured pictures, three line paragraphs, little short words n’ all for the less civilised. There may even be a copy for you at the Panthers Members Library … oh … wait … I read that the your Penrith tribe’s edgy, jokester Centrelink bound hero and his feisty li’l brother attended Patrician Brothers Blacktown where English literacy is an elective subject, evidently. Tyrone Junior’s file ought to be handed to the Club’s consultant lawyers to attend to his sacking too, without further comment. It won’t be.

Penrith are not acting in good faith at all. Agreed.

I’m really not. I’m objecting to clubs selectively using this BS “game into disrepute” clause to get out of bad contracts. If we are happy to it being invoked for a minor indiscretion like May’s tweet, we have no way of objecting when it is next used for a minor indiscretion against a player we actually like, just because a club wants to free up some salary cap space. The precedent would have been set. Yes, May is a pig and an idiot. But that doesn’t mean Penrith are acting in good faith.

Actually we do. Why are you defending this bloke? Why would anybody defend him? As the judge said his actions were ‘reprehensible.’

The ‘mob’ consists of corespondents here concerned about the damage to the game that occurs when self entitled footballers behave the way May, his brother and Cleary have. If you can’t see that then you are part of the problem. And yes you can lose your job if you damage your company’s reputation due to your behaviour and by bringing your company’s name into disrepute.

Cause even our politicians know better than to tape and circulate sex acts without the consent of the girl? You really need to stop defending him. He cost himself his own livelihood because of his disturbed inability to see the fault in his actions. He has brought everything on himself, and only himself is to blame

"So the player they’d otherwise be “forced” to pay overs to is hunky dory? Cool." Probably not, but that's a single player not getting more than they're worth in the scheme of things. "You can’t subsidise a product in a market and expect it to have no impact on consumption." You can, and I'm not saying you should, just that you can if you limit the subsidy. 'Seniors' get a discount on a great many things, such as their council rates, but I bought a house in the area. "The exact opposite is true and the long term merits a subject of vast economic debate." Ahh, the 'economic debate', and that's a good thing, because it keeps me in a job.
