The plight of the Phoenix

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

With the A-Leagues season starting in the coming weeks, one club in particular has been keeping a very low profile – and that’s the way Wellington Phoenix like it.

COVID has been incredibly tough on the New Zealand-based club. Having to relocate to NSW for two years in a row and not being able to see your family and friends for several months would be tough for anyone to deal with.

This season, the club will be based out of Chatswood in Sydney’s north and will have exclusive use of the Valentines Sports Park for training – ‘home’ matches are to be played at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, though.

Pre-season has yet again been chaotic as the Phoenix played their first trial match only recently and the full squad have arrived in NSW late.

The club has had a horror off-season in terms of its playing roster, losing stars Ulises Davila, Tomer Hemed, Cameron Devlin and Steven Taylor, as well as reliable squad members Stefan Marinovic, Matthew Ridenton and Mirza Muratovic.

The Phoenix will enter the season with the youngest squad they’ve ever had in the A-League – an average age of just under 24 years old.

Wellington do, however, have one of the most astute managers in the league: Ufuk Talay, who they managed to keep a hold of, after he turned down the Melbourne Victory hot seat.

Talay has been lauded for his man management skills and tactical acumen, but it is his ability to find young players that might be his best trait – the shrewd signings of Nicholas Pennington and several others yet again prove that Talay has an eye for spotting talent.

Pennington was born in Rome and came through the Cagliari youth system before finding his way at Olbia Calcio 1905, who play in Italy’s Serie C.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Fans who are unfamiliar and hoping to see goals from Pennington might be disappointed – he is a defensive midfielder with an amazing engine. Expect to see him cover every blade of grass and be near the top of the leaderboard when it comes to miles run during a game.

Even though Talay turned down the Victory job, there appears to be no bad blood between the clubs as Wellington have pulled off another fine acquisition with the loan signing of Matthew Bozinovski.

Bozinovski was a starting centre-back for the Victory NPL team, but with Tony Popovic in charge – a manager who prefers older players – Bozinovski jumped at the chance of more regular game time with this young Wellington side.

Although not the quickest, Bozinovski is an old-school CB who will prove a handful for attackers due to his gangly frame, strength in the air as well as one-on-one situations.

Impressive young right-back Callan Elliot returns to the club after an unsuccessful spell with Greek club Xanti and the squad has been beefed up with three talented youngsters from New Zealand club Lower Hutt: Ben Old, George Ott, and Kurtis Mogg.

Ott is a striker who scored 21 goals in 18 matches for Lower Hutt and has been compared to Burnley’s Chris Wood, who coincidentally went to the same school, St Pauls.

Mogg is a centre-back with a cultured left foot and Ben Old is an attacking midfielder capable of scoring and providing goals.

These new arrivals will add to an already exciting young core that features breakout stars from last season, Ben Waine and Rene Piscopo.

The Phoenix’s season will ultimately come down to whether they can score enough goals. Pressure will be on UK imports David Ball and the returning Gary Hooper to take up that challenge.

On paper, this is a side that looks like it is in for a rough season; even the most hardened supporter would be surprised if they made the finals.

With the wily Talay as coach and plenty of young talent, Wellington will surprise sides that underestimate them. They are a team that will rise like a phoenix, as well as crash and burn at different points this season.

Talay has SFC roots, for that reason alone he cannot be part of WSW. It's 2021 not 2012.

It's not their geographic base, it's the Wanderers'.

I know it's been hard for Nix, but I do like the fact that the football community in the Gong has supported them with gusto.

The pandemic has probably affected the Nix more than anyone else. Let's hope early in the new year they can return to normal operations, otherwise, it's going to be a very long season for them.

The problem is not Macarthur, its geographic base is as strong as anyone else's. The problem is the franchise/licensing system that we currently have in place.

from how a club is run point of view, sydney easily trump wanderers. But the great levelling factor is the youth coming through, wanderers have better youth than sydney- however once Talay gets his deserved move to a big club, will he still stick to his youth movement? If Talay was to be given full control of signings (which i dont think robbo has) the wanderers job would probably be more appealing, but then theres the boardroom issues he will have to contend with. the sydney job is a massive rebuild (phasing out 5-6 first XI players), the wanderers one is less because of the kids theyve got.

get a camera, we agree on all points here :-) With reference to WSW, I just dont think Robinson is good enough, but I might be wrong. Personnally, if it was me in Talay's shoes, I would be targeting Wanderers as my next career step. The Smurfs are a good side, but they have too many old timers that are not that far away from hanging up the boots. WSW have so much potential to be something that dwarfs the Smurfs. And you're right, everyone's "second" team. Nice work with one.

best chance is to fly out the gates early with those fixtures in NSW: macarthur, central, wanderers, newcastle, sydney 2 of clubs will finish near the bottom, 2 of the other clubs have major off field issues and sydney, well its sydney. i wouldnt be surprised to see wellington get 8 or 9 points from those first 5 games

i think they're most peoples "second team" (definitely through the last 2 years at least, due to all the circumstances) talays shown what he can do on a modest budget, i'd like to see what he can do on a big budget. he's holding out for the sydney job, but the wanderers job will more than likely come up first. Wanderers have a lot of really good kids coming through, but they have mega issues at boardroom level. a coach like talay, could awaken the sleeping giants at wanderland

Andy, this is not a bad article at all. For me, it's teams like this that often surprise. I know that the average age of players is bordering on the requirement for permission slips, but it's not unusual to see these young lads come out and surprise the heck out of everyone. They are fearless, they are young and super fit, they want to get stuck in and with Talay steering them around, he is as cunning as a fox, sharper than knife and he has experience on his side. Nic Pennington I am looking forward to watching. this kid has had a pedigree football upbringing. The bonus is that he totes an Australian passport. This might just be the environment that lets him shine and really show off what he can do. The Nix are that team that I want to do well. They just bring positive vibes. They are honest in their football, they give heart and soul and they're not gobby like Semi Retired United (Sydney). I really hope they surprise the living daylights out of a few people this year.

Im not expecting us to be a top 6 side this season until we are back in Wellington, but i expect us to beat a few good sides before then.

AA - we have Wellington on our list of “must go to” away games every season and a trip to Wellington never disappoints. We meet up with Phoenix fans for a good matter at The Old Bailey conveniently situated en route to the ground and afterwards, re-convene at The Churchill where the fans and players congregate after it’s all, over. The players go upstairs for a meal and supporters are often addressed by the CEO who also welcomes visiting fans. There’s plenty of good bars and eateries in Wellington and plenty to,do,for a long weekend. We,have really missed it during this pandemic ….really worth a visit.

Thanks Andy - a good read that gave me a better understanding of their team this year. Like most other supporters I admire their commitment and wish them well. I also hope they get back to NZ as soon as possible and can draw some good crowds again.
