‘Is that an even playing field? I'd say no’: Moon slams Brisbane’s travel schedule

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Their first A-League Men point in the bag after a hard-fought 0-0 home draw against Adelaide, Brisbane Roar are once again dreading a same-day road trip to Melbourne.

The Roar headed into Saturday’s clash against the Reds at Moreton Daily Stadium on the back of consecutive defeats away to Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory in their opening two fixtures.

Those losses were contributed to, Moon believes, by a travel schedule which left his team flying to Victoria, playing the match and then flying home on the same day on both occasions.

He felt a proper preparation had resulted in a much-improved performance against Adelaide and warned league bosses he would be far from happy if a better travel arrangement cannot be found before they face former coach John Aloisi’s Western United next weekend.

“There’s one lesson, don’t do it and the APL needs to listen,” Moon said when asked what his team had learned from their past two road trips.

“I know they’re doing their best so this is not the perfect situation. I know that but listen to the Brisbane Roar, listen to our players.

“Don’t talk to the PFA (Professional Footballers Australia) and then get them to ask on the sly whether they enjoyed it or not because that’s not asking the right people.

“Ask us if this is proper preparation for an elite team in this league when others aren’t doing it.

“Is that an even playing field? I’d say no.”

At least the Roar head to Melbourne with a point on the board this time, and it could have been all three but for some wayward finishing and the goalkeeping of Adelaide United’s James Delianov.

The Reds’ shotstopper pulled off a triple save at close range from Roar striker Luke Ivanovic in the second-half in the best chance for either team to break the deadlock.

Carl Veart’s team, who have now drawn all three of their fixtures this season, also had their chances with captain Stefan Mauk hitting the post in the first half and Kesingi Yengi’s late effort being blocked by Roar defender Joshua Brindell-South.

“We’ve had three tough games to open the season. Away to Perth, home to the champions, then away to Brisbane,” Veart said.

“They’re the two biggest away trips, we’ve got them out the way, which is good and to pick a point up in all those games, it’s pleasing in that regard.”

Sports opinion delivered daily

In a tensely fought match, referee Chris Beath dished out eight yellow cards with his final booking leading to the sending off of Adelaide’s Spanish defender Javi Lopez in the dying seconds.

There were also injury concerns for both teams with Jack Hingert (hamstring) coming off at halftime for the Roar while veteran import Isaias (hip flexor) was also removed at the break by Adelaide and is facing a race against time to be fit to face rivals Victory next weekend.

Hingert's starting to look injury prone, not fully fit again at present and it's affecting his game.

of all the coaches in the A League, Moon is the least maker-of-excuses, and that's by a long way. And he is one of just a few coaches giving youth a fair go. Indeed, a very common criticism of Roar is that they play too many youth. As for Lescano, he's only played a few minutes, still not fully fit so maybe it's a bit early to write him off.

i think its safe to say if they continue going the way they are, more kids will debut before the seasons out. brisbane arent the sort of club like the victory (last year) to just keep on playing the OAPs in a horrible season But the seasons only 3 games old and brisbane could've had 9 points already, every match they've created 2-3 really good looks at goal. but like i said earlier, the long term successor/s to hingert is already there at the club

Neville played well, but I thought Trewin was our best defender. He shows maturity beyond his years. Mlinaric also had some very good moments, but he gave the ball away with stray passes far too often. This is my opinion formed at the ground, I really don't care if anyone disagrees.

AA - You are at it again telling us of young players ready to make the Roar team in place of the "veterans". There are many Roar fans who would wish that your youngsters would get a go for the league position at this point in time is not too flash, and that is not only an opinion ,it is a fact. The best man in the Roar team at the weekend was "oldie" Scott Neville not only given the task of mentoring another youngster at centre-back but finding it in himself to win balls in the opponents box at "set pieces"., when other "youngsters" got involved in "ball watching". Roar have a few problems ,not all on the field, but I wish learned people like yourself would stop building pressure on those kids "in the wings", Cheers jb.

i have no allegiances, except to players i want the best for gilroy has started the season well at perth, but its been at the detriment of josh rawlins progress (top 3 young rightback in the country) rawlins contract is coming up soon, i'd be looking at leaving perth if i was him - he should be there first choice rightback everyone is allowed their opinion, but it seems like mine is exactly the same as the roar coaching staff when it came to gilroy hingert is getting on in age but brisbane does has 2 potential young players knocking on the first team door that can fill that position in trent millard and rhys gray

Excuses? Keep your job? Nah! It is difficult to break John Aloisi's record of no win in 12 matches in Melbourne Heart. Wooden spoon? Probably! And probably Moon has another lemon. Lescano is similar to Kudo. How can a win made without a striker who has the composure and technique to score upon a chance?

LH -hate to sound like a stuck needle on the record player but I do wish you would ignore comments being made by others, in the main Adelaide Andy. He has an opinion and you should have your own. Waz says the player Gilroy is 25 but in my opinion that makes him a lot younger than the veteran who is playing right back with Roar at present. So I feel Gilroy could have a better future in the game than the present Roar fullbacks. I could be wrong of course but that is my opinion not the thoughts of a man with other allegiances than you. Cheers jb.

You make some statements that lack the understanding of the game plan Moon is attempting (only he knows anyway to be fair). You say “Lescano is never in the box” which is kinda true, but neither is any of the other strikers played across the three games - so is that a criticism of the player or the game plan? Moon is asking his two “strikers” to play wide, more like wingers, so no - they won’t be in the box and while they successfully opened up Adelaide five times with this tactic on Saturday the lack of anyone on the box is telling. It seems the player who is meant to be in the box is the AM (Akbari) who Scott MacDonald in commentary described as “playing a false 9 role” Whatever it is, it’s not working but it’s probably the system which may take time to get right (or abandon completely) not the players ability. To your point that travel doesn’t impact the way they’re playing — it literally DOES. The biggest impact is not the 4am starts snd same day travel it’s the mandatory 2 days quarantine for all the staff on return. By this time next week, 4 weeks in to the season, Roar players will have spent 6 days in quarantine which means they will have had 25% less training time than other teams - that has to impact the way they’re playing. I agree everything can’t be blamed on travel BUT the APL should never have asked Roar to travel away to VIC 3 times in the first 4 rounds like this, there were alternatives.

Good point re: the 'Nix & Glory. If the NZ lockdown continues it may be 2 years in a row on the road for the 'Nix. Bloody hell.

Excuses to keep your job with coauthored by Moon, Veart with foreword by AA. The travel thing doesn;'t make sense with how Brisbane have played. I like Akhbari in the first game , I like their subs in that first game except they came on too late. I liked that Corey Brown was taken off. That looked like a blue print to success. However its changed and for the worse. I also like the young guy at end in the third game. I think Lescano looks like a dead weight, he is never in the area, hardly moves and seems to end up on the wing. Why Lopez went at hit him late in the match ironically on the side line, and then went crazy I cant understand. This is the sort of guy you want in the opposition, its not like he bothered to tackle anyone to offend them. Ivanovic he has missed a tap in and and open goal but at least he gets in range to score. You have to start wondering about Brisbane, hearing Holman is suing them for not getting his 372K a year wage is an eye opener. Its clear the club has got the oldies complex. Wenzel Halls last year started off running his head off, then slacked off big time, and now he is putting in double the effort for Western United. That suggest to me the wages and treatment of youth at this club are rock bottom. Adelaide also looked dodgy. Caletti then comes on and looked great, focused fit, didnt do any screaming and acting either.

Brisbane is stacked at rightback, both Millard and Gray are the future. Gilroy is no big loss

he was signed as an injury replacement for a month or so and played a couple of games, at least two from memory. When I raised that question a few weeks back, AA the scout replied pretty firmly that Roar is better without him.

Saw the game and yes, very impressive afternoon. Although he’s not exactly “young” (he’s 25 next birthday). Why didn’t Roar keep him - your guess is as good as mine but you can’t keep them all

Waz Have just watched the VIC v Perth game and was very impressed with the youngster Gilroy. Felt sure I had seen him somewhere before and turns out he was used by Roar as a sub in a game at Redcliffe last season and from memory he impressed in that game too. Why was he allowed to slip through the net?. jb ps he scored a great goal for Perth and set up another with a pin point cross. jb

It’s an absolute nonsense to make them fly down twice in the same week. Whoever made those decisions clearly doesn’t have “fair competition” in their vocabulary. (However, Moons problems are more to do with his playing system rather than travel).

I would have thought you’d be concentrating on why VAR didn’t pick up a clear push in the back resulting in Nix going 0-1 down??

AA - In today's game there is little call for out and out wingers so it is difficult to picture Ivanovic or his team-mate playing wide in today's game and off course, to have successful "assist figures", it is always better when you have a recognised finisher to feed. That is one position Roar have not filled in recent seasons, so we have to judge players in what they are "programmed" to supply in the team's game plan. Cheers jb.

Marcel - You must remember those "early showings" you mention were in the main against local NPL teams and there is little doubt that the lad would have shone in that company. However the gap between A-league and friendly matches, never mind those played against lower league teams, is a huge gap to overcome and it is in this environment the lad is now playing . Cheers jb.
