Roar hold Sydney to draw despite Sky Blues' dominance

By News / Wire

Sydney FC have failed to make the most of their dominance as Brisbane Roar were able to frustrate their way to a 1-1 A-League Men draw.

After the Sky Blues secured an FFA Cup semi-final by beating the Roar earlier in the week, they were unable to engineer a repeat performance at Kogarah Oval on Saturday night.

Elvis Kamsoba’s searing run set up Anthony Caceres for Sydney’s opener before Nikola Mileusnic levelled up for Warren Moon’s side in the 41st minute.

Sydney remain in sixth spot on the ladder while winless Brisbane picked up just their second point of the campaign.

The Roar had an early scare when Scott Neville nearly turned a Rhyan Grant cross into his own net, with goalkeeper Macklin Freke able to prevent the goal.

Sydney took the lead when Kamsoba picked the ball up deep in his own half and burst across the halfway line.

The forward avoided a couple of covering challenges to thread an inch-perfect ball through a sea of bodies towards Caceres, who finished clinically in the 34th minute.

But no sooner had Sydney begun to assert their dominance when they struggled to clear a routine ball out of their own penalty area.

Sports opinion delivered daily

A jostling Juan Lescano helped force the ball into the path of Mileusnic who was able to get a shot away.

Andrew Redmayne got across but was unable to turn the ball round the post as Mileusnic’s effort fizzed off the keeper’s hand and into the net.

After the break Brisbane sought to rely on counter attacks and set-pieces to threaten the Sydney goal and Redmayne was almost caught short on one free kick.

Steve Corica turned to his bench bringing on Max Burgess, Bobo and Harry Van der Saag after his side had failed to muster much response early in the second half.

Van der Saag and Burgess both had opportunities to restore Sydney’s advantage but neither could crack the Brisbane defence.

Sydney recruit Mustafa Amini and Patrick Wood were deployed with 15 minutes to go with the latter unable to fashion a winner when he was sent through on goal in the dying moments.

jb Nomates is a fun poster, sometimes eminently sensible sometimes just in it for the sport - my reply was to a sporty type comment I don’t think there’s much point in us discussing past vs present teams because I think we’re both in agreement - past is better and present has gone backwards.

I thought Daley was one of our worst players, definitely at fault for the first goal diving in like a chook on Elvis. I don’t think any one player is performing as they should/can be - that raises lots of questions but I wouldn’t be rushing to judgement on individuals just yet.

Waz - I watched last night's game and learned something that has been bothering me for at least the last 3 or 4 seasons. Take Sydney. Performing in midfield we watched Ninkovic and a young local who has been holding his position for some seasons now, How did they stack up?----they didn't. They had a speed merchant up front who doesn't do much except run . Compare him with the commentator on the game ,Brosque. How does the youngster stack up against him? He doesn't. Did I learn much about Roar?. Nor really unless you like to compare the young centre-back with Smith ,the former organiser of the great Roar team. Or is it fair to compare the Argentinian with Beshart, the competitions all time record goal scorer, after all, someone must have suggested signing him. So my friend ,always remember ,everyone sees the game through different eyes, and to be honest I am getting a bit sick of comparing teams of today with the same clubs of yesteryear., and, deep down, I think you are too. Cheers jb.

Watched the game on TV and wasn't that impressed with the football either team played for most of the game, though there were some moments of light. Brisbane however still don't look threatening in attack at all - that goal Brisbane scored was fortunate after a previous attack broke down (again). I'm hoping that these guys can get their understanding and coordination in attack happening otherwise it is going to be a long season for roar supporters (I'm not sure I can call myself a fan at the moment as there not much going on to be a fan of). Bit stupid having Brosque doing the analysis of the game as an ex SFC captain but they seem to do that... I notice Bruce Djite on the Adelaide games too, though he seems a bit more impartial. I had to laugh when 10 was trying to show a highlight package pre-game and only had the single goal to show....at least we have 2 now ! Let's hope the games at home show something a bit better, but I'm not holding my breath until we show some decisive and coordinated attack...I too thought Lescano was pretty much all at sea and could have done much better with the opportunities he had. I don't think not kicking a ball for a week matters all that much - maybe towards the end of the game match fitness might be a factor, but you shouldn't be unable to string some passes together and keep the ball just because you don't train for a week. They are supposed to be pro's aren't they?

Moon: “From the 24th of December to the 2nd of January, not one of our players kicked a ball. We were all in isolation” That sums up what all ALM teams are dealing with at the moment.

I dont get this obsession with players carrying a few kilos, its nice if a player is in great shape but the most important thing is they have good fitness and running the yards.

What does Lescano bring? In the first half he couldn't finish, he couldn't play others in, he couldn't hold the ball up. Is this the used car salesman defending his recommendation. Akbari looked good in the first game, subsequent games way down on that level. Thats the problem with Roar, too many dodgy unreliable players, Daley, Olsen dont have issues with the travel arrangements they have consistent high effort levels. A lot of the others you wonder what they were doing the night before.

I was watching the other game on Paramount at the same time (AU v MC), which seemed to be a better game, although no mention of it anywhere on the Roar.

Nothing to cheer about in that game on Saturday night. Moon, has to go, he is a poor manager and as for Corica, he must be on borrowed time. Kamsoba's delightful ball to Caceres for SFC goal was the only thing I could see that was worthy of that match being televised on Channel 10, other than that, it was a dismal game to watch. I will keep watching tho, and hoping that we will see the forwards of all clubs start to step up and shoot. Please players, have a go, with more shots and more shots on target and stop trying to walk the ball into the net.

Waz -this comment asks two questions (1) was Moon correct in approaching this game the way he did. The answer is an opinion of course and if a draw is aimed for then he was successful. The second question (2) you pose is "How did he get there in the first place and I think the answer to that is one that we would all like to know. As the sole football rep in Australia's professional league I suppose it is natural that we will see 'transfers" to other clubs with the amount of kids we have playing the game. The question to be asked is how good are those kids coming out of the lower divisions for as I pointed out elsewhere, the successful Sydney team of 7 years ago was procured mostly from other A-League clubs or overseas. Is that type of activity going to continue? Cheers jb.

Waz -Do not fall into the trap of playing what I call the numbers game. Since the Brazilians moved from the worldwide used, and accepted, WM formation in the early 1950's,formation wise the game has gone completely mad with commenters attempting to put a set of numbers as to how a team lines up. So be it for the numbers statisticians. At the top of the coaching world the game has moved on and what we look for now is how a player plays according to the two basic principles of the game , attack and defence. Possession and non-possession now govern what a player should do in any set of circumstances so the practice of using terminology about a position ,ie DM,AM,RW, and LW show a lack of appreciation as to what is expected from any professional player. ie when his team is out of possession a player should be doing everything in his power to win back the ball in a totally organised manner no matter where the ball is on the pitch. That means picking up the opponent nearest to him and sticking to him like glue. Conversely the opposite is how a team in attack mode should be playing, looking for and hopefully finding space into which his team-mate could find him with a pass. Both these modes call for one thing ,constant movement, to get, or to use, the ball in a better manner. For example, a player deemed an AM is completely useless for half a game if he cannot participate in winning back possession. Cheers jb.

Roars hype train has burst from the FFA Cup to now the A-League. Why is it that mediocre performances like this from a coach that's out of his league get praised?. I get the fan boy dust guys on here blow but honestly now when is enough = enough? Also its January were are the extra players coming in from this window>? Or are Brisbane gonna troll the QNPL again to find players.

Very obvious difference between same-day fly-in, fly-out and fly-in the day before performances. There is simply no comparison between Roar’s Wednesday night game and last night. I’m aghast that this minor point, a massive disadvantage for Roar, is overlooked in all the expert analysis. The only way the APL will convince me that they care for the integrity of our game is to place the same restrictions on the travelling teams for their return matches in Brisbane. As to Roar’s performance last night, their youngsters moved the ball around well at times, with a purpose and looked more dangerous more often than their opponents, despite Sydney’s “dominance”. Interesting that the TV panel saw Roar’s goal come from a mistake, but SFC’s from sheer brilliance in attack, and they dodged detailed stats discussion. We may as well have stuck with Fox. Parsons and O’Shea improved, and Eli Adams again showed he can play at this level. These kids get big wraps from Moon, with Dehmie and Lofthouse, but they need to give their coach a bigger return for his faith in them. We’ve seen glimpses last year (not much from Dehmie yet) that they’ve got the goods. With injuries, players out of condition, players forced to return early and others play out of position, Moon’s got a tough gig this year. It’s a golden opportunity for the youngsters.
