Muslim AFLW player explains call to not wear Giants' pride jumper as coach backs her in

By The Roar / Editor

GWS Giants AFLW player Haneen Zreika has opened up on her much-publicised decision to withdraw from their clash with the Western Bulldogs, due to her refusal to wear the club’s pride jumper.

Zreika, the competition’s first Islam player, reportedly explained to her teammates during the week in an ’emotional and educational session for all players, which includes a number of LGBTQIA+ community members’.

The 22-year old on Friday posted to Instagram publicly revealing her reasons for the decision.

“As the first Australian Muslim woman in the AFLW, I have a responsibility to represent my faith and my community,” Zreika wrote.

“I respect people regardless of their sexual orientation.

“This decision was extremely difficult and I appreciate the support of AFL, Giants, my teammates.

“Inclusion is about creating a space where people are able to respect their right to choose how they live their life as long as they don’t advocate hate and division.

“My platform is not a place for people to disrespect and harass others so please be kind.”

Zreika’s teammates have been described as ‘incredibly supportive’ by former Giants player Alex Saundry, who told Fox Footy the club has her back.

“Haneen’s a proud Muslim woman and it’s been a really complex and difficult decision for her,” Saundry said.

“GWS as a club are the only club to hold an annual Iftar event and have a really strong connection to the Islamic community. They’ve just been super supportive and couldn’t have done more to support Haneen through this process. I know her teammates are really supportive of her too.”

Giants coach Alan McConnell agreed, saying after the match the club will welcome Zreika back into the team.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“As I said to Haneen, we can have similar opinions, different opinions, but they’ll never break the bond that we have for one another and she has with our team and her teammates. I’m very comfortable and confident that’s all intact,” McConnell said.

“We’re proud of Haneen, as we are all of our girls. We empathise with the challenges that she faces in this circumstance, but equally we’re really proud of the connection and obligations we have to the LGBTQI community.

“I’m actually really proud of the fact that I think we live really strong values in terms of inclusion every day of the week, every week of the year at our footy club, and in particular, in relation to this team.”

Zreika has played 24 games for GWS since making her debut in 2019.

Her absence didn’t affect the Giants, defeating the Bulldogs by 22 points, 7.1 (43) to 2.9 (21).

Zreika did attend the match at Henson Park in Sydney to support her teammates in their win, while she joined in the customary team song afterwards via FaceTime.

No I’m not. I’ve attended a few Iftar dinners over the years & once helped local Muslim groups with organising one, but I’m not religious.

Why does Zrieka have to justify her actions by detailing the reasons behind her beliefs I never said she did, I was responding to the idea that all beliefs are equal. They are not. Zrieka has no obligation to justify her beliefs but no-one else has any obligation to respect them either.

Ahh, the whole lack of proof thing is an issue for me I don’t assume anything, I don’t believe, male, female, elephant, it’s all fictional to me

I also think you need to look at that in the cold hard light of reality unfortunately. Who said it? Was it a minority? Check, Was it a female, check, was it worded cleverly, check What can you do? it's a free country, some people however seem to be able to say more than others. Look at what GWS said, I've never seen a finer example of fence sitting, people are to scared to say anything. I'll say it, she's a bigot, couldn't care less why she doesn't appreciate the gay community, her reasons mean less than zero to me.

I also follow the fortunes of the Swans, my most local club. It's a sporting club not a political party. Board members, officials, coaches, employees or players are entitled to express any opinion that they like or none on their personal social media accounts. However, a sporting club shouldn't be taking the role of advocating that people vote one way or the other for same sex marriage or on any other matter. It is hardly being inclusive of people employed within the organisation, including players, who may have been intending to vote differently. I have been told that in the earlier part of the 20th century when most Catholic priests were Irish born, many of these priests used to tell the congregation how they should vote at an election. This went beyond their role of helping the faithful to develop their consciences in discerning right from wrong. This doesn't happen today as far as I know. Whether you are a church or sporting club, don't tell us how to vote on anything. We have the right to vote because we are old enough and mature enough to make up our minds for ourselves using our own consciences. Players seek to get drafted because they want to play Australian football at the highest level, not because they consent to be used by sporting clubs for their own social and political agendas. If the club wants to go work behind the scenes with various disadvantaged groups, such as LGBTQI community, various ethnic groups, indigenous groups, the homeless, terminally ill children and some players wish to be involved, all well and good. Just don't force the expression of an opinion by manipulating all the players to wear some jumper design or symbol. The main thing is that people within the four walls of the club, including supporters, feel accepted despite differences in ethnicity, nationality, religion, beliefs (or non-belief), or sexuality. By bringing people together into one squad that is working together with the aim of winning a premiership, it can be amazing how people with discernible differences can learn to bond together in mutual respect and friendship to achieve their goals while also changing their perception of one another in a unifying way while still maintaining mutual differences. Sometimes then you can become friends with and come to understand people who are different from you when it would never have been within your expectations.

I didn't mean it in a bad way. Are you speaking from experience as a Muslim, just out of interest?

Even among those that have no religion, very few approve of adultery.

Firstly, how do you know there is no supreme being that we all depend on for our very existence, and secondly, why do u assume that every religion has that supreme being as male? For what it's worth, in Islam God has has no gender and is unlike any (of God's) creations.

Incorrect. It’s absolutely not about ‘promoting’ being gay. It’s not a membership drive. It’s highlighting things like youth suicide … still for some reason (homophobia is my wild guess) prevalent in the gay community, and basically saying ‘hey … you are ok, we respect you as a human being.’ Which she says she does anyway, so again, not sure what the issue is. She’s not being asked to stand on a float at Mardi gra and prance around provocatively in her underwear.

What’s the LGBTI cause being promoted exactly? Is it simply the right to not be treated poorly because of where you put your private parts with a consenting adult? Hardly controversial is it?

Ken W. Why does Zrieka have to justify her actions by detailing the reasons behind her beliefs. She is entitled to her beliefs without having to broadcast the reasons for them. Wouldn't matter anyhow. Explaining one's thinking rarely makes a difference regardless of what side of the fence one sits. I presume you somehow believe your views to be more worthy of respect than Zreika's even if others wouldn't. All just a matter of opinion. P.S I am an agnostic but will defend the right of people to express their opinions without being attacked unless they promote violence or hatred.
