Erratic Roar being smashed in key moments: Moon

By News / Wire

Brisbane Roar coach Warren Moon has put his team’s inconsistency down to getting smashed in the key moments of A-League Men matches.

The Queensland club have yet to win back-to-back matches this season and Thursday’s 2-1 away loss to Newcastle dropped them one spot to tenth.

The Roar looked to be taking control of the game after starting the second half on top and equalising.

However, a fierce Angus Thurgate shot delivered a much needed win to Newcastle, who climbed three places from last to ninth, leapfrogging Brisbane.

Moon lamented the manner in which his team conceded both goals.

The first came after a shot crashed off a post and the ball rebounded into the net off the back of the left hand of Roar goalkeeper Macklin Freke.

While Moon acknowledged the quality of Thurgate’s decisive strike, he was disappointed his side hadn’t taken opportunities to clear the ball from the set piece, which immediately preceded the goal.

It continued a demoralising pattern for Brisbane, who have lost five of their nine games.

“I think maybe apart from one game, we’ve played some good football and been in every game, but where we’re getting smashed right now is in the key moments of matches,” Moon said.

“We were on top at 1-1 in that game and really should have gone on to win but find a way to lose it.

“We’ll be bitterly disappointed as a group about how we defended that set piece and then had two or three chances to clear it, but failed to do so and then it’s difficult for us in the last 20.

“That’s been the story of our season in many parts of the matches, so until we can improve that we’re going struggle to find this consistency.

“We think we are a good side, but right now we’re not showing it over 90 minutes.”

Although his team finished on the right end of the scoreline, Jets coach Arthur Papas was also impressed by Brisbane

“In fairness, I think that’s probably the most complete team we’ve played against performance-wise,” Papas said.

“They really challenged us, their movement was good, they were stable in what they were doing, they made good forward runs.

“They are physically very good, it’s a young team so I take my hats off to them.”

Lionheart - to the best of my knowledge A League teams are allowed 23 paid players on their books. You say ALL the strikers are injured. Would you mind telling me who those 6 strikers are? You go on to say that in your opinion they have for long periods dominated many teams this season. My opinion is that if a team has only scored 8 goals in 9 games (3 in one game) it can hardly be said to DOMINATE in any game they have played. You say they are a young side and yet I think it would be correct to say Neville, Hingert, Brown, and O'Shea are all the wrong side of 25 to be described as "young", yet are all regular performers in the team. (not to mention the absent captain who we are led to believe is injured too). You also mention procuring a couple of decent overseas players ,is that a suggestion to the board ,and coach, that the team needs to be improved.? Not once in my comments on this subject have I suggested Roar needed imports. Do I agree? Don't know. That's not for this season so is of little help tp coach Moon at this point in time. Nice to see that other unemployed manager AA has come up with some numerical suggestions that he thinks would work wonders to improve Roar. My opinion? He'd be better off concentrating on Adelaide United. Cheers again . jb

You can't overlook reality if you want to be constructively critical. If all strikers are out with injuries or recovering fitness, criticising the next best option as poor selections by the coach is not being constructive. You can't say the strikers are no good when they're not available able to play, or only available for limited minutes so you have no option but to use midfielders out of position. Using different fitness criteria to that dealt to the coach is not being constructive. I've seen Roar hold their own in most matches this season, one exception. They've had some bad luck but they've looked very good and dominated every team they've played for long periods, despite the difficulties with selections. They're a young side and given a couple of decent foreign selections, they'll win this competition. That's my opinion, despite your constant suggestion that somehow if I don't see it and call it like you, then I'm wrong.

Lionheart - Do you know the differences between "pessimism" and "constructive criticism"? There is a difference you know. Pessimism is when someone has given up all hope in what they are experiencing and wish to make that feeling public knowledge. Constructive criticism is where someone with an interest in what they are witnessing cares to pass comment on how that situation can be improved. There is a mile of difference in those two "meanings" and ,as I've said to you before ,form your own opinions on what you see ,not what you would like it to be, but are afraid to speak out. Cheers jb.

You should be over being surprised by my comments by now JB. I'm a realist, and an optimist for our club's future. A bit tired of the relentless pessimism of some who really should look to another club or league.

Lionheart- you accuse me of being naive for thinking that "Roar are trying to win the premiership" If they are not trying to win the premiership why else are they playing in this competition? Cheers jb..

Surely you are not so naive to think that Roar are trying to win a premiership this year JB.

Lionheart - Find it hard to follow your logic in this comment, . You say "Roar and Moon are heading in the right direction". You follow that by saying "They\re doing what should be done in a national second division both with players and coach" My friend, the trouble with that is that they are not playing in a national second division, they are representing Brisbane in a fully professional football league and will be for the rest of this season, so should be doing their best to finish as high up in that comp. as is possible. As I said before it is time for experimentation with the players at hand and the following games used for a plan, formation , or personnel, who can get a ball into a net for their efforts. It is a cold ruthless task for a coach but it also can be a huge jump in his experience in how to handle his players in time of apparently extreme difficulty. After all their standing is still measured as such ----- P 9, W 2, D 2, L 5 Goals for 8, Goals against 12 Points 8. Not a lot to beat to get improvement. Cheers jb.

Lescano is useless , the only linking up he did was hitting the ball into Elsey, Elsey was the one who setup the shot for Lescano. How Jets worked out they needed Elsey even now you see every ball is going to Jurman to play out and they avoid him. Lescano missed yet another free header in the area. I cant see how Parsons could do any worse.

A bit unlucky! Freke has his first own goal and the penalty failed. It is difficult for a goalie to decide to dive or not dive in a fraction of a second. Young had his body put the ball into the net after the ball bounced off the post few years ago. The commentator praised Freke for trying best to save. Unlucky! The second goal loss was due to the laziness of the mid-fielders or because of exhaustion. Congratulation to Lescano's first Isuzu league goal. He has shown improvement. No big deal losing 2-1 away. Keep the spirit.

Watched the 2nd half and Roar looked like the better side for a period there but as always blow there chances. If it looks like NPL and it plays like NPL then it must be NPL standards. Moon out!

brisbane i picked to be the dark horse this season (which looks likely to be wrong) but my prediction on lescano scoring less than 5 goals looks to be accurate when every player is fit - brisbane could really hurt teams in quick transition. Moon needs to turn this team into a purely counter attacking one 4-3-3 attacking false 9 formation lescano plays as the false 9 and links the play up - daly sits the whole match in front of the back 4 milesunic Ivanovic Lescano Akbari Daly Hore Brown Mlnaric Trewin Hingett Holmes 4-2-3-1 lescano as the target man, hold the ball up waiting for onrushing attackers - the 3 in behind constantly rotate positions Lescano Miesunic Akbari Ivanovic Daly Hore Brown Mlnaric Trewin Hingett Holmes both formations get the best out of these particular players skillsets. - the key player in both set ups is akbari no room for aldred or o shea (may as well pay out there contracts) - parsons and lofthouse as impact subs, coming on around the 60 min mark each match neville takes mlnarics spot in the side when his loan is over

Tough conditions and some tough luck for Roar with an own goal and a missed penalty, but hats off to the Jets who pulled out a ripper of a goal by Thurgate. Despite the doomsayers, Roar and Moon are heading in the right direction. They're doing what should be done in a national second division, both with players and coach. They'll get there, just got to hope they can keep the core of the team in tact, and bring in better visa players than what we saw last night. Steinman may as well be another youngster, wasting a spot. Lescano? Jury's still out with his injury/fitness, can only wait.

Franco - Like many others in our game , analysing how a team is playing can be based on many things, but one thing cannot be ignored and that is the age old statistic that to win games you have to score more goals than your opponent. So despite comments being made from many different sources one thing stands out, Roar are not scoring enough goals and that's why they' re where they are in the league table. Warren Moon is a young coach with very little experience in the top echelons of our game and as such is on a learning curve, so one has to feel just a little sympathy when watching him "suffer" on the sidelines. Unfortunately there is no quick cure to his dilemma, time will give him experience but whether the club can exist as we know it remains to be seen, for although they are one of the better supported teams in a Covid ravaged competition, their move to Redcliffe has apparently saved on expenditure, but what it has done to the reduction in attendances, is measurable. and cannot be ignored.. Last nights game showed another flaw in an inexperienced coach's thinking and that was in his retention of the same players week in week out. Loyalty to players has no place in a team that is struggling and to be kidded that the team played well against a disasterous WSW a few days earlier is truly "pulling the wool over the eyes", the score in that game was 3-0, it could, and probably should, have been 6 or 7 so the main flaw was still evident , not enough goals. So what to do?. Moon has to start and use his imagination. If he feels his "salvation " is in the use of young players, he has to nullify this season and start to "experiment" with what he has. He has to use the eagerness and aggression that young players should exhibit to start getting goals, more than their opponents, and I am quite sure the regular fans would appreciate that more than the reasons, or excuses, being put forward now. O 'Shea and Neville are the experienced pros in the squad and they could be used as the building blocks in building a "Brisbane Babes" team. that. if successful ,would bring the fans rolling back, if failure, no worse than they are at the moment. jb

I'm very disappointed for Moon, really thought he was the right guy. Great background at both Roar and NPL, a local guy who knew the local youth and NPL. Hopefully the Bakeries are too cheap to fire him but it's sad to see him talking as if things just happen to the team he can't control. "We've been good but..."
