Wanderers bounce back with win over Victory

By News / Wire

Western Sydney Wanderers have breathed life into their A-League Men campaign with a crucial 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory.

Second-half goals from Tate Russell and Dimi Petratos, who converted an 80th-minute penalty, gave Mark Rudan’s side their second win of his tenure.

The result moves the Wanderers to one win outside of the finals spots and weakened the Victory’s position in the table.

Tony Popovic’s outfit barely laid a glove on his old club and they have not won a league game since Boxing Day.

In fairness, both teams were pretty uninspiring in the opening 45 minutes.

In what must have been one of the most drab first halves in A-League Men history, the Wanderers mustered just two shots on target to Victory’s zero in front of a crowd of 4231 at Commbank Stadium.

James Troisi’s long-range effort in the tenth minute was comfortably dealt with by Ivan Kelava before 30 minutes of lethargic play.

The only interruption came at the end of the half when Kelava was forced to palm away a Tomer Hemed header from a free-kick.

The Wanderers thought they had got the breakthrough just after halftime when Troisi made a darting run down the byline before crossing to Terry Antonis.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Antonis fired past inside Kelava’s near post but the celebration was short-lived after Troisi was ruled to have taken the ball dead in the build-up.

But Troisi’s misfortune mattered for little when Russell popped up to open the scoring in the 55th minute.

Making his first A-League Men start, 20-year-old centre-back Phillip Cancar played a long ball over the top of the Victory defence with Kelava undecided whether to come or stay on his line.

His hesitation worked in Russell’s favour as he cushioned his header past the Victory keeper and into the net.

The goalkeeper’s worst was yet to come when he raced to cut down a through ball to Bernie Ibini only to bring the Wanderers striker down in the box.

Petratos stepped up from the spot and buried the penalty with ease before wheeling away to celebrate with the home supporters.

Lionheart = as I said a few days ago Roar and Moon should write this season off and start to experiment with his playing staff a bit more than he is doing. There are some promising kids at Roar but week in week out, win, lose, or draw, we see the same eleven players running on to the field mostly in the places they held during the previous weeks. Hingert and Brown are being pulled forward to aid in attack and this is causing holes to appear in danger areas. so why not move these experienced campaigners into midfield on either side of O'Shea. This would allow two youngsters to be used in the full back positions giving them experience for next season. This is just one of the suggestions that appear to be needed at Roar and it would supply answers to Moon who must be wondering by now what he has to do to get this team scoring. cheers jb.

you're kidding. Your first line showed you weren't watching. Didn't bother reading beyond that. Even the commentary team called it an entertaining match and called the Wanderers-Victory match boring. Nix certainly played a lot of longballs and won with their counter attack. Roar are a developing side, defence lapses last night but will get their main defender back soon.

Chalk and cheese, Nix and Roar looked like a lazy Sunday afternoon game in the sun with both teams staying back, Victory WSW was high octane pressing. I If the opposition park the bus, Roars major attacking route Miluesnic running onto something hasn;t got the same space to execute. Wellington they scored from a corner and then were even more defensive and hanging back. Miluesnic got injured in a challenge with rufer and off at half time. Hore did put in a couple of great shots from outside the area but that was it for the Roar dont know where you get the idea they had a lot of shots on goal. The second half up till about the 60th minute was like the Matildas game against the US, Lescano couldn;t press was just watching on, Wellington playing round the back . So Moon instead of taking Lescano off , leaves Lescano on and stationary, does the Stajic press winger onto center back, ball over the top to Sotirio and Wellington get their second goal and then Lescano goes off, sucker punched.

im not condoning violence (the opposite actually) but if protesting is required, peaceful ones never work. It needs to be more ‘guerilla like’, which unfortunately means the media will come down on the league and club hard. contrary to popular belief, i do have a lot of time for the wanderers lol burning an effergie of JT, might get an interesting response – just make sure everyone’s faces are obscured when its filmed lol

Brilliant idea Andy. Hope the RBB take up your brilliant idea to protest at surroundings that are closer to home. I was at the game last night and MV were dire in the first half. Unsure why Dagostino never started. Hamil was missed too. All in all a decent workmanlike performance from Wsw! All we need now are effective ways to remove senior Wsw management.

I guess it took the light off the Nix-Roar match which, despite the score line, was actually a good match to watch. Both teams had plenty of shots at goal, Nix scored a nice goal from a distance, Roar defence lapsed twice gifting a hard working, enthusiastic, skilled Nix team two goals. The Nix keeper was the busier of the two, and the Nix defence the better (by some), but this young Roar team, which is far from the finished product, will have gained some valuable game time. As to the other match, I watched it out of the corner of my eye on the phone. Quality names but very average performance all around.

This match was actually the first high intensity match WSW have played. The teams were both excellent defensively, if WSW had done their usual laying down on the job. and their goal mouth was being peppered while they watched on was that the entertainment people were seeking. It was a good arm wrestle and a lot of first halves in top level leagues are like this. The big question what caused such an amazing turn around, while the first match Rudan was in charge was an improvement up against a weak Perth, it was nowhere near this level. Then they had two matches where they went back to their old ways the last match against City was pathetic. Antonis was the biggest difference , for some reason he looked like he was struggling to move freely previously in the season, whatever hampered him seems to be gone, while he is not the fastest mover, he was constantly pressing. In attack while his passing was superb he hardly got the ball and it seems to me that the opposition are marking him closely and never letting him turn. On the other hand they seem to be a lot less concerned about Troisi. The problem with Troisi is while he has a lot ideas they rarely come off, he often tries the ambitious option and the opposition get the ball back usually, so thats why they leave him free. Then when troisi gets tired his radar goes really wonky, when you have antonis and petratos both great passers the team doesn;t need troisi to be running the show they need another runner. Petratos this was also by far his best match , he was pressing, tracking back a lot better than he has done previously, if he plays at this intensity he has fair amount of bulk and wins the ball ,when you have players finally doing their bit, then players like Ogawa who were doing a lone hand previously then become a lot more effective. Canjar has a superb match, his technique is solid, passing is good, reading of the game is good, he and Gordon came and intervened when they had an opportunity , no mad fishing expeditions like Williams , or lay back and watch Natta. Its a good combination, Natta will now be out of the picture he is nowhere near these two, Koutrombis can replace Natta as the reserve . The question is where have they been hiding this guy. Where were they hiding Ziggy Gordon and Tate Russel. The future direction is they need to play Aquilina or Russel as a winger and the other as fullback, replace Troisi with Rodwell,Petratos . Hemed,ROdwell and Ibini should share the striker position neither Hemed or Ibini fit enough and Hemed is slow.. WSW have the squad , with the right 11 chosen they are a title threat or will zombie mode come out again. It did show Melbourne Victory's limitations in attack, their midfield is limited in passing ability, a lot of their attacks have been from stealing the ball off the opposition . Margiotta is a very average striker , apart from pressing a bit he doesn;t have much on offer scored 2 goals only and on the slow side, Dagastino has been a dissapointment , he has scored some great goals, but that was in matches were he was getting a lot of opportunities, and missed easier ones, in this match the opposition were on his button and he looked ordinary and couldn't get a shot off. Kruse maybe needs a go at striker. Rojas and Ikonomidis are some threat though not as good 1 on 1 as they used to be , the one big outlet MV do have is Folami but he needs earlier ball. His shot in the first half which looked on target but hit Ziggy Gordon in the head was a superb bit of play and had enough pace to beat the keeper. That wasn;t even acknowledged by the commentators or NoBrains below. Folami was up against a good athlete in Russel with Ogawa helping tough combo. In the second half again the commentary team cant even watch a replay properly, Folami beat Russel and then had Ziggy Gordon on his backside only for him to step on the ball and slip over. It wasn;t a foul and it wasnt a dive both suggested by the commentators. The other huge incident the ref got right he played on for a tap in but then Rojas going back for the ball blocked it, it was penalty otherwise . This goal keeper MV has is a disaster , why would you spend money and a foreign player on this, the first goal if he wasn't getting the ball he needed to be on his line ,it would have been almost impossible to beat him with a header from that far out . With Ibini what was he thinking jumped at ibini trying to hit the ball with his thigh, why didnt he go at it with his hands. Was it another crazy case of a keeper thinking they were out of the area the same way the Adelaide goal keeper went at with their chest.

margush was a wonderfully talented juniors player, from a development metrics point of view - he is in the top 5 keepers i've seen in the past decade in all of australia unfortunately he never got his chance at adelaide because of the sheer depth and quality that was coming through the state. i mean look around the league, birighetti at the mariners learnt his craft in adelaide, glorys cameron cooke learnt his craft in adelaide. all 4 goalkeepers on uniteds books currerntly, could start for most teams in this league as a city, adelaide is experiencing it again with the next generation of up and coming goalkeepers - its a really exciting time currently, theres another 3-4 more keepers playing under 16s that i feel have great potential as well. dan was super unlucky to lose his place this season, yes he made a few blunders last year - but all young goalkeepers do that, you need to stick with them though. banners & fans not attending arent going to help remove the heihrachy at wanderers. if the wanderers fans want action, they need to do something much more serious - which will have repercussions for the sport as a whole. start protesting outside JT's house before he leaves for work and when he gets home, people will get arrested and the media will label the sport and supporters as thugs. burn effigies of JT, costello etc

Very disappointed with that decision after DM was probably the best player last season. It is just another awful decision being made at the club. Did you see the JT banner?

clubs just need to stop recruiting visa goalkeepers, they offer nothing. australia has always produced good goalkeepers, its probably the position as a country that we would be known in europe for. one of the rules i'd like to see permanently introduced would be - your goalkeeper must be australian and under the age of 25. 3 clubs have visa goalkeepers and thats 3 clubs too many

That first half of play...OMG! How badly has the victory been travelling for the last 5 or 6 weeks? I'd say they just about have the worst selection of foreign players in the A-League currently, and maybe even in the history of the A-League (we're talking Leandro Love levels). Last point, if you're going to recruit a foreign keeper as one of your visa spots, geez, he better be a damn good keeper!

pleased to see margush starting for a change - he never should've lost his spot at the end of last season (especially to a VISA goalkeeper, why a league clubs keep wasting visa spots on goalkeepers in beyond me) finally tate russell starts!!! and he even scored - tate starts at right back for every single club in the a league, immensley talented wanderers must see a future in him as they turned down adelaide in january for his services + aquillana will be europe bound at seasons end

Two of the biggest clubs in the A-League, yet the game was so boring with only 1 shot on goal in the first half, 2nd just as dire. The big clubs are killing the A-League TV ratings.
