Teen sensation Kuol scores again as Mariners secure finals

By News / Wire

Another strike from teen sensation Garang Kuol has helped secure Central Coast an A-League Men final berth with a 2-0 win over the struggling Brisbane Roar.

Kuol came off the bench to score his fourth goal in seven A-League Men appearances after Lewis Miller opened the scoring for the visitors at Moreton Daily Stadium on Tuesday night.

The win, Central Coast’s fourth in a row, locks in their finals spot ahead of this weekend’s final home-and-away fixture against local rivals Newcastle.

“We set ourselves a target at the start the year with the group and that was to get as far as we could in the FFA Cup and we made the final … but also to get in the top six,” Mariners coach Nick Montgomery said.

“Everybody wrote us off at the start of the year before we even kicked the ball.

“We lost Matty Simon, lost Alou Kuol, it was virtually a new team this year bar one or two.

“I had full belief in the young boys that I’ve coached for the last couple of years, they’ve been the nucleus of the squad with a couple of experienced boys around them.

“I knew that I’d spent a couple of years building a foundation in the academy to develop players and, for me, I don’t see them as young players – they’re A-League [Men] players.”

Defeat for second-last Brisbane extends their winless run to six matches ahead of their season finale against Sydney FC next Tuesday.

The Roar started the brighter of the teams but it wasn’t until the 33rd minute that the first shot on target was recorded.

A curling effort from Alex Parsons forced impressive Mariners goalkeeper Mark Birighitti into a diving save.

But just as the Roar were looking to make their dominance count, they fell behind.

Cy Goddard’s turn and cross from the left found an unmarked Miller at the far post in the 40th minute and he headed past Jordan Holmes for his first A-League Men goal.

Brisbane turned to their bench at half-time, bringing on attacking duo Luke Ivanovic and Nikola Mileusnic.

The Roar nearly equalised in the 57th minute but Birighitti again denied the home team, saving sharply to deny Jesse Daley from close range before Ivanovic’s follow-up was blocked.

Introduced in the 59th minute, 17-year-old Kuol took just four minutes to make his mark and seal the points for the Mariners.

“We’ve had our arse kicked all season in the big moments,” Roar coach Warren Moon said of Miller’s goal just before the break.

“We were quite solid in the first half, I don’t know if they even had a chance up until that point.

“We had moments going the other way. We weren’t brave enough. We weren’t clinical or aggressive enough for the chances we had and again a lapse in concentration.

“We didn’t track a runner and they punished us … we’re lacking in the key moments right now.”

The visitors suffered a setback in the 78th minute when defender Dan Hall limped off with a knee injury, reducing the Mariners to ten men given they had used all of their substitutes.

Brisbane, however, were also down to ten players just eight minutes later when Scott Neville was shown red for a challenge on Nicolai Muller.

Referee Tim Danaskos upgraded his original yellow card decision after a VAR review.

Dunno, why they should feel short-changed, Newcastle conceded 4 goal, their entertaining attack isn't what's costing them games. If any one should feel short-changed its the Mariners, Penha literally elbowed one of our boys in the back of the head out of play, it was the players second red card offence in a month, and the FA compromised the integrity of the league by giving the player 2 weeks so it would be more entertaining!!! I'll remind you Miller initially got 2 weeks for attempting to control a ball.

"Why not FA have a Canberra side and an academy. They could develop and sell, be like the Mariners football of excellence but n steroids?" - Instead of fully funding one team they could go halves on two. Canberra and Tasmania. Both are similar situations. Then if one gets taken over privately they could shift their funding to another team somewhere else, like North Queensland. But on the topic of FA owning an academy, it doesn't have to be in Australia. It could even be somewhere like London, close to a whole bunch of clubs and scouts.

They’ve known for some time JB, that’s been obvious. Moon is very open but he didn’t actually name them – the questioner did, last night. The crowd just a few days back, Anzac, very wet and miserable, was over 7,000. But yes, crowds will drop off if results don’t turn around. Mid-week night games are not exactly attracting a crowd anywhere, Roar is not alone there, in fact probably ahead of many.

They have propped up teams before - why not have their own team and show how it can be profitable.

Lionheart- there may be a lot of people behind Moon's love of locals but they were not at the game last night with probably what was the lowest crowd ever to attend a Roar home game. This is going to be a huge problem for the Roar's finance department and to add to that problem is the fact that all around the country over the last few weeks crowds have actually been on the increase averaging around 6000 per game.{7}. 1650 is a long way short of that figure. Getting back to how the team is lined up. Fowler made no secret of his desire to play the modern" back 3" formation ,that's the one so successful last season ,despite their league position. With the signing of Chapman and what one has to assume the opinion of the captain, that may well be the road the team is on again. Problem- That system is very dependent on the players knowing exactly what their job is in the overall plan. This Roar team at present cannot be analysed as to how the plan is being adopted for it is obvious that with the number of selection changes and substitutions being made the coach himself is not sure how to go about introducing such a tactic. The one thing I don't like from your comment is the naming of players who won't be there next season. That sort of information should be private, man to man, with only the player spreading the news if he sees fit. cheers mate jb.

For me this is a new brainer, imagine an Aussie players regularly being sold to top 10 European clubs for $5M +, whilst creating a bidding war. This will drive interest in the A league but also create a demand for “skilled youths” - which in turn the scouting will increase as the dollars will be a big motivating factor. I don’t understand how the APL can’t see the link. The way is Develop, create, transfer rumors and interest, sell then more money to develop and scout. Until the APL addresses that our league is a feeder league and that the rewards gained outweigh anything else. This could fund the second division nearly outright through a proper feeder club transfer system. On another thought can a national body fund a team in its league? Why not FA have a Canberra side and an academy. They could develop and sell, be like the Mariners football of excellence but n steroids?

agree Grem. I made a similar comment, not as articulate as you, a few weeks ago. Instead of helping pay for senior marquee players, we'd do better to keep our better youth.

thanks jb, always appreciate your analysis. Most coaches say Roar is very difficult to score against. Left back has been problematic since Corey Brown got injured. His normal replacement, young Izaack Powell who’s been groomed for the previous two seasons, sadly is seriously ill this year. The position has been problematic all year. So too was right back until Hingert came back not that long ago. For all the criticism of Aldred, I think he’s more than worth his weight. He works very hard and makes a notable difference when he’s fit. I was at last night’s match so haven’t seen the telecast but I have seen Moon’s post match interview. He made it clear, when asked, that Lescano, Wada and Steinmann won’t be staying. He’s given them all more than a fair go, especially Lescano who has had fitness and other issues, but Moon’s had enough. Much will depend on new Visa recruits, obviously. I think Moon has too much faith in Dehmie, who has much potential but … (as you say). Our youngsters are a good group in my view, but a mixed bag as expected, hot and cold, good one week/minute and ordinary the next. Ivanovic looks good but it’s obvious he really cheeses his teammates off with his mine mine approach to goal, happens too often and if the first goal early lead means anything, he’s responsible for much of our woes. Very good to see Milusenic back, and Chapman looked solid last night. Moon’s faith in youth and local players is commendable, I doubt Queensland footballers will ever get another opportunity like he’s giving them. There are a lot of people in the local football community, ok, I only hear a few of them, who are right behind his push for local talent. I hope that he’s given a bit more time. Interesting to see more than one parent or family greeting Mariners players on the fence after last night’s game.

TSS -Watch you don't join the throng that is picking Roar's defense to ribbons when in fact they have been conceding an average of only 1,5 goals per game for 25 matches. When one considers that in those games they have been forced to try out two new goalkeepers and a few young centre-backs in Trewin and Milnaric their defensive record is not as bad as many teams above them in the league. It is at the other end of the ground that the problem lies where only 26 goals have been scored in all matches. Pre-season they played a couple of trial games against potential local NPL sides and scored heaps of goals. Was it this that fooled the management? Come the A-League and like many before them they found the goals dried up with a vengeance and it is this fact of life that has stayed with them all season. They have failed to score in 9 of those games and managed only 1 goal in another 10 games, leaving only 6 matches, getting doubles in 3 matches, 3 goals in 2 games. and 1 with 4 goals back in February against Perth. I think someone of your experience will digest these figures and come up with the picture that all is not well at Roar. Cheers jb.

the Australian cricket contracting system is you start to play well make the team your not on contract get paid peanuts because the contracts are handed out every 2 years at a fixed time. It would be very easy to poach players with such a system. Most of the clubs in the world their priority is to find young players they can sell. The A-league is about the coaches who seem to be part of the Old Socceroos club which is integrated with the dodgy Australian agents, and the coaches main interest seems to be having the agents dictate which overly expensive foreign player they get sucked into hiring. If I was in charge of a club the coaches would get sacked if they are not making money out of youth players. Blokes like Moon ,Garcia unless I was the Romanian mafia and needed a good beggar to go 2 dolla , 2 dolla they would be out of a job.

As time goes, one learns to be more sophisticated. I have refrained from mentioning bad things as much as I can. However, as you have started, I do not mind to follow. Aldred is like Lucas Neill, the socceroos who became old and slow. You probably have high soccer sense to see his bad positioning makes the defending line poor. This 2022 Brisbane Roar has 4 lines in trouble. The goalie is mediocre. The other 3 lines, defense, mid-field, and front, are problematic too. Is all these because of the budget? How can a budget club do well. Wait, a website says, Steinmann is paid 400k a year. Is this true? Wow, Berisha was paid 750k a year when he joined MV. Then, poor management?

I agree that we need to encourage these players to stay a bit longer before heading off overseas. What it does show is that we have a lot of talent here and our league produces good football and good footballers.

The last F3 derby was quite the spectacle. Newcastle will throw everything at the Mariners. I think a lot of Jets fans feel short-changed, & they firmly believe their entertaining style of football should have been rewarded. If I were Monty, I’d field the strongest team possible, as Arthur Papas will relish the battle.

Just a thought – probably can’t work. Our APL and FA talk about investing in youth and making money from transfers. Why don’t they put their money where their mouth is and have proper marquee youth on good contracts of 3-5 years. These would be contracted players like Australian cricket has. The APL and FA should make a list of exciting talent that is under 23 that we want to retain in the A League, and in their present clubs, to keep our comp exciting and play for our Socceroos. Players such as Kuol, Nisbet, Yazbeck, Brook, Parsons? There’s a lot more. Why can’t they work with each club and go halves in longer and better contracts for our marquee youth we want to keep. Of course good and bad decisions will be made, but if/when an appropriate offer comes from overseas, at the right time, sell them and each group gets half the transfer fee. This way we get to see these players in our comp and not sitting on a bench in Norway or careers going backwards like Arzani. It’s also a way for the APL to make money from the partial sale of our league – perhaps they could turn the 130 million they received into twice that. I know I want to see Kuol at The Mariners next year and Brook at Adelaide and so on and this may be a way to achieve that.

Gillespie was better in the air and scored from set pieces he contributed at both ends. Aldred was also missing for most of the clean sheets last season. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out Aldred should have gone instead of Gillespie. Aldred seems to be the biggest chum with Moon, not to mention others. Macarthur and Western United take out the goals from their defenders at set pieces they are almost at Roar levels. The biggest tragedy though letting go of Riku Danzaki, he is the sort of player who will be tremendous in the open fields of the A-league against slow defenders and useless in the J-league. Could not score in J2. If you have a decent heading no 9 they just go to any Asian league and be a huge star like Josh Kennedy you cant go against the market.

TSS - Your observations are as usual, close to the mark but what is surprising is that their problems are being said to be defensive when in fact ,last season, with Aldred and Neville playing they had the second best defensive record in the league and this year they have definitely slipped but are still showing better figures than many of the teams above them. Now that Chapman has been procured to fill the gap left when Gilesphy left it could be that their record will improve in the coming season. Aldred and Neville were both procured by Fowler who showed a tendency to play a back 3 format. The one position that Robbie never filled in that plan was the lack of a big central striker,a flaw that still exists today.
