Corica up for Sydney rebuild challenge

By News / Wire

Sydney FC coach Steve Corica is backing his past successes with the Sky Blues to earn him the chance to overhaul the A-League Men’s squad.

Sydney’s underwhelming 2021-22 season ended on a disappointing note on Tuesday as they fell to a 3-1 loss to fellow strugglers Brisbane Roar at Moreton Daily Stadium.

It means Corica’s men end the season eighth on the ALM ladder and having suffered a club record six-straight defeats including their Asian Champions League campaign in Vietnam.

It’s the first time in six seasons Sydney have not reached the finals and facing an off-season rebuild, with several members of the squad coming off-contract.

That list of off-contract people includes Corica, but after leading the club to three straight grand finals in his first three years at the helm he’s confident he’ll be offered a new deal to stay in the role.

“This season has been disappointing and you’ve got to take responsibility for that but I think the first three seasons of mine, we’ve made the grand final every year,” Corica said.

“Three in a row. I’m not too sure how many other coaches have done that.

“But this year has been disappointing. We obviously need to pick it up next year. Make sure we get the recruitment right and we’ll come in fresh again next year and then start again.”

Brazilian veteran Bobo has already called time on his career while 33-year-old left-back Michael Zullo is also being tipped to retire after playing just one game in the past two injury-wrecked campaigns.

Corica says he’s also facing some tough conversations with long-serving club legends such as captain Alex Wilkinson, Serbian schemer Milos Ninkovic and English forward Adam Le Fondre in coming weeks.

“They’re conversations I’m going to have with the players next week,” Corica said.

“There’s going to be a fair turnaround I think from this year.

“There’s a lot of work to do in the off-season but we’ll worry about that when we’ve had a little bit of a rest and a think about it and start working on planning for next year.”

That's right, and it was John Crawley that got the most out of Vuka and Redders during his time working under Arnie. https://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/football/a-league/teams/sydney/former-central-coast-mariners-assistant-john-crawley-jumps-ship-to-sydney-fc/news-story/808a71595259e797460d8cf3cdf0d8a7

"On 22 May 2015, it was announced that Kalac would join cross-town rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, reuniting with fellow coach Tony Popovic, whom he worked with at Sydney FC.[21]" "On 20 December 2016, it was announced that Janjetović signed an 18-month deal with Western Sydney Wanderers.[5] He would rejoin his former goalkeeping coach Zeljko Kalac, stating that it played a large role in his switch to his former's cross-city rivals."

im not sure i agree with you on this - for arguments sake the recent adelaide squad had 8 players that have played overseas - with a couple more from this team to do that at season end city have got to their lofty heights due to the owners - without them, they would be a very average team (like the heart were lol) they now have the best infrastructure in the league, they have the most money and they can pillage young and mature players from interstate. i've given a few examples of how they have been able to get around the salary cap as well EG. cars, accomodation, employment to parents etc isnt that exactly what sydney have been doing for years prior to covid hurting them? its easy to keep a squad together when the city financial group have been found guilty before of financial irregulations - but paid there way out of it. i expected city to finish first, in fact with the money they have - moving forward, anything less than 1st place is a failure. sydney can rebuild quickly, because they are run well financially - however the issue is they have nearly 20 players off contract and a coaching dilemma to try and work out

Even then there was one particular moment which summed it up for me. Talbot had the ball, looked inside the box & someone.. Burgess ?.made a run.did he pass it, of course not he turned back like all Arnold/Corica teams do. They value possession over taking the risk..in our half thats fine…BUT thats the reason we dont rattle defences anymore.

Brainstrust -Thank you once again for your enlightening views on Roar's strengths and weaknesses albeit you do analyse other teams as well. I have to ask a question here. How far does your knowledge take you into the 3 defender scheme, a factor that has been part of coaching for at least 50 years and yet is rarely seen in practice in Australian football. It is a simplification into the tactics of the game based on whether you ,as a team, have ball possession or conversely, are trying to win back possession from your opponent. ie you are either attacking or defending, but the ruling remains the same, three man attack, or three man defence. Forget all this nonsense about "press" it is a word conjured up to over the job of the first defender, in simple terms as first defender he has to be as close to an opponent as is legal, Because of the threat from clever 'dribblers", the second defender has to be positioned in such a way that will see him able to challenge the opponent if his pal ,the first defender gets beaten. He then employs a holding stance allowing his beaten mate to recover and get back jnto a third defender position. So you see the effect of using this strategy is extremely successful at stopping an attack from building. Is it successful? Try it sometime with your players and you will be amazed at the times the 3 defenders will win he ball back. You mention a young player covering the back post. Another myth in our game. Back posts or near posts don't score goals ,players do and it is obvious that it is the players who should be marked, always "goal-side" of the opponent. If you have understood what I am trying to say you will be able to transfer the 3 defender rule into an attack function, (1) the player on the ball,(2) The player foraging out front trying to find space and distract the defenders and, (3), the third attacker backing up incase the possession is in danger of being lost. Try applying these simple rules to players in your next game and it may surprise you how far behind our players are in respect of what job they are doing during play. Enjoy- cheers jb.

A good manager will have the squad performing much better than the sum of it parts. Look at Klopp at Liverpool. Footballers who come to Liverpool are better players under Klopp than when they arrived. Morale and confidence of all players is fostered and supported. Squad players excel when they are given an opportunity in the run on team. Sydney have played too many aging players irrespective of form. Inflexible dogmatic tactics appeared to drain the confidence of Sydney players. The Sydney squad on paper should have delivered more than 8 wins out of 26 games.

Arnie and Corica are different , Arnie always played with a big target man, Janko, Bobo, Holosko, Simon, Smeltz, and Blackwood he only picked him because he was tall. Corica and Aloisi are different, Aloisi comes in performs well with young players , sells them then hires old men 35-40 and then he gets sacked. Corica just keeps going on with the same players even bringing them back after they leave. Where Arnie was great was not his coaching was his Euro network of contacts, and knowledge of ex- Australia players which delivered him great players from overseas at both CCM and Sydney. Zwansjik, Rose,Janko. Dimitrevic, Ninkovic, Merjevski, Bobo, Holosko, Bujs etc. Corica has brought in one La Fondre.

Chapman was sent the wrong way, so then someone was drawn out to meet Goddard at the edge of the area, which then sets a domino effect in the defense of moving across. Trewin was at the back post the domino effect opens up space in the center of goal and Nkolo makes the a run towards there . Trewin follows him so then the back post is free for Miller. The real bad defending in that match was Aldred against Kuol he should have been in Kuol's face as he received the ball, that was a joke. Mariners didnt play well they, they struggled through the Roar press but the big difference when a Roar player was going for goal they were on top of them pressuring them because their young and fast in defence. Birigghiti was also very good. The reverse happened in the Sydney Roar, Sydney played through the Roar press , the Roar defence didnt stop Sydney it was their poor shooting and the Roar goal keeper having a blinder. Sydney defence was unlike CCM and worse than Roar, and Howard Belle was atrocious. I dont see why your complaining when Burgess had his header contested versus Parsons being free from a cross from further out. The difference between Moon and Corica is that Moon has only Aldred, he seems to be next to him all the time , and Corica has a whole harem of old men.

Of course it would have been a great opportunity. Do you think Corica knows that? Not bloody likely. For me Corica has been all huff and puff and post-match tirades and propaganda. What he has not done is proven he is the goods. He has ridden on the work that Arnold did, which in my opinion was not much more than bring in a bunch of senior players when a considerable number of other clubs were either experiencing difficulties or using younger Australian lads. Corica is mini-Arnold. Arnold had the National team back in 2005, and they brought in Guus Hiddink because Arnie was all huff and puff and no substance, Corica is a replay i.e. version 2.0. The sooner the pair of them disappear into retirment anonymity, the better Australian football will be, especially without the tsunamis of post-match verbal effluent.

i wold beg to differ. Mr Carl Veart inhierited a team that was showing wear and tear. What he has done is commendable to say the least. He's rebuilding that team and they are going to achieve in the next few years in my opinion

It will be interesting to see who Corica is as a coach in the upcoming season. Will he continue down the path of what he learned from Arnie or will he become his own person/coach? Either way it will be a wonderful experiment in what doesn’t work for Australian football and what does work. Hopefully the FA is watching closely and takes it into consideration for the Socceroos. If Sydney has the cash than they should spend it on overseas players in their mid 20s and build a squad around that and than recruit the early 20s for wingers and a few 30 year olds for defense and keeper. But Corica doesn’t strike me as that sort of coach. He will go the path of Aloisi and just stick to the plus 30 year olds, defend and hope the strikers figure something out from their rare chances just as Arnie coaches. Rudan is kind of the same and kind of different.

C&C - It may surprise you to know that the present champion team ,Melbourne City, has actually been built over the last 2 seasons. It may also surprise to know that at least 8 of their regular starters have been overseas to tryout in the "big" leagues and another two are local players who have just got into first team selection in the season just closed, Metcalfe and Tilio. The vast majority of players have only been at the club for 2 seasons so a bit of shrewd work has been done even before the present coach got there. A lesson to be learned? jb.

Brainstust - depends how you see a game. You blame Chapman for being "wrongfooted by Goddard" without saying where this took place while I remember quite well it was out wide on the left flank and the crossed ball that went across the goal to the opposition fullback who had advanced in general play into the 6 metre box and had no problem scoring. My question?. Where were the full backs ,or defensive midfielder, when all this action took place. not where they should have been ,that's for sure and last night's Sydney goal saw young Olsen caught in no-man's land when a cross was delivered the same way. There is a gap up Roar's left that one could drive a bus through and as we see man after man tried at fullback (3 to date) the midfielder who is supposed to cover for whoever is playing there is picked ,without fail, every game. Can you explain that. I can't. Cheers jb.

Chapman he started the last match , I think he puts in a lot of effort not sure how good that effort is, both first goals last two matches for the opposition he got wrong footed by Goddard and then Caceres snuck away from him. Why not play him as a center back and get rid of slow and unsteady Aldred. Chapman is certainly better than Steinman, Steinman went overseas as well , he certainly didnt improve there.

What this says to me is Coricas overseas move has collapsed, maybe they got cold feet after the decline in performances this year and the ACL performances. Corica should have thought of his own skin , rather than looking after Wilkinson, Bobo, Ninkovic and La Fondre. The impression I get is that the old Socceroos club and their journo network which is always talking up the likes of Rudan and others doesn't have a liking for Corica at all. Maybe he wasn't a member of the PFA or something I have sensed that Corica is disliked . The constant reference to the team that Arnie built and left him, Corica first season he lost Mierjevski, Bobo, Bujs , various others . Corica brought in La Fondre his only good foreign signing. Then next season Corica lost Brosque, Brilliante, Brandon ONeill. Zullo was constantly injured. So with the exception of Grant, Redmayne, and the aging Wilkinson and Ninkovic by the second year where Corica won the double the next season he only had 4 original team members. Corica then lost the plot, he should have let go of Ninkovic and Wilkinson after his second year, La Fondre he lost to India. Corica should have been looking for another striker that he could get 3 or 4 years out of not bringing back La Fondre and Bobo for a last hurrah. Muscat didnt even have to do any research on the players for their match up it almost the same squad he played in 2018-19.

The very best coaches can take a promising youngster and coach them to a higher level. If coaches don't have that ability they will simply buy established players and hope their pedigree will carry the team. The very best coaches plan for succession and are visionary enough to anticipate needs beyond the currents season. They are also close to the players but not too close. Steve
