REACTION: JOC limps off, Tate immense as Reds need to dig deep to end losing slump against Moana Pasifika

By Tony Harper / Editor

Queensland Reds ended a run of four defeats but their horror run with injuries continued in a gutsy but ultimately frustrating 34-22 victory over Moana Pasifika at Suncorp.

Wallabies star James O’Connor limped off after an innocuous kick with 20 minutes to play while soon after centre Josh Flook needed the green whistle such was his pain after damaging a left shoulder.

The game ended in chaos with Moana Pasifika crossing for a try that should have been reversed when the scorer Henry Time-Stowers stepped into touch. That miss from the officials cost the Reds a bonus point, but they thought they’d seized it back soon after when the inspirational Tate McDermott crossed, only to have the try chalked off for a forward pass in the lead up by Seru Uru.

The Reds moved to fifth on 35 points, one behind the Chiefs.

“A step in the direction as far as getting a win but there was a bonus point there and we gave it away,” said a self-confessed ‘grumpy’ Reds coach Brad Thorn.

Thorn will have a nervous wait on O’Connor. While Reds staff said he felt something “go” behind his knee but was just taking precautionary measures, Stan Sport’s Drew Mitchell had a different view after talking to the No.10.

“If that’s the message that the Reds are giving out I won’t give the message James gave me,” said Mitchell. “It’s obviously concerning, you could see the frustration on his face when he came off – the face went straight into the hands.

“I’d be really surprised if he’s suited up next week against the Crusaders.”

The Reds had to show plenty of courage in the second half, down to 13 men at one stage as Moana Pasifika threatened to run over the top of them.

Timoci Tavatavanawai took that literally, going into beast mode to run clean through a stunned Tate McDermott, who spent time on the wing.

That was just about the only time McDermott looked ruffled all night. He was exceptional, as was Harry Wilson on return from a concussion break, while Jock Campbell scored two first half tries.

“I’m gutted for Flooky and James as well,” McDermott said. “Injuries happen and are a big part of this season but it’s brought this team together. From that point of view it’s a positive but I’m gutted for those guys.”

Dave Rennie had a blunt one word answer when Mitchell, interviewing the Wallabies coach before kickoff, asked him to name a couple of potential bolters for the July Tests against England.

While Rennie wasn’t biting, his presence in the audience added some edge to the contest and Reds fullback Campbell laid down a marker.

Campbell’s first try showed great determination while the second had plenty of fortune about it, and his performance will do nothing to douse debate over who wears the No.15 jersey in Perth on July 2.

Tom Banks is the favourite, and Rennie said he would have no problem picking the Brumby even though he has committed his club future to Japan after this season.

Campbell, who has seen off the challenge of Reds teammate Jordan Petaia this season after being relegated to a wing for a month, will be hoping it’s a ‘yes’ from Rennie when he picks the team next month.

Rennie was more forthcoming ahead of the game about Fraser McReight, the No.7 who is stuck behind Michael Hooper at international level, but had a big game on his return from the flu, telling the flanker to keep working hard and wait for his chance.

And McDermott also had a challenge laid down this week, when his Brumbies and Wallabies No.9 rival Nic White signed a one year deal that appears to make him Rennie’s top scrum half choice, had his best game in weeks, working well alongside O’Connor.

McDermott was pivotal to two of the first half tries, sensing a chance after Moana Pasifika spilled a JOC kick and setting Uru loose with a breathtaking grab and pass that led to Campbell’s first try.

“Tate McDermott is so crucial to this team,” said Tim Horan on the Stan coverage. “We’ve seen how much he’s carried this team and how passionate he is about the team That 9-10 combination for the Reds just looked comfortable.

His kick into space later in the half was run down by Flook who sat a pass up for McReight to cross.

Moana started the brighter and dominated the first five minutes, culminating in a try to Solomone Funaki, converted by Christian Leali’ifano.

The Reds found their feet though and O’Connor’s deft kicking in behind caught them out several times.

O’Connor was dogged by injuries last season and missed the first three of their past four defeats. His recovery could make all the difference as the Reds try to claw back lost momentum.

Nup..... Only ABC with their refusal to use company names during sport commentry refuse to change with the times. Lang Park officially became Suncorp Stadium in 1994 and the financial group timed its latest six-year deal to coincide with the re-opening of the ground in 2003 following its $280m redevelopment. It’s official name is still Lang Park. Suncorp is a commercial sponsor and that is likely to change one day, eg if Suncorp merges and changes its name, a common occurrence, or whey the current agreement comes to an end.

TBH I doubt the 9000 figure. Suncorp looked pretty empty.

Actually, the ground was presented to the City of Brisbane on condition that it be named after the family, Lang, in perpetuity. Suncorp Stadium? A commercial decision between State Government and a company. The best ground for atmosphere of rugby games wouldn’t be there if not for the generosity of one family and they should be recognised for that generosity. Of course that’s based on history and governments and the young don’t care about that, at least not the one’s I’ve dealt with.

Yes. Digby was a great player and even his celebrations were entertaining.

Do you consider Digby Ione's turtle break-dance try celebration a mature, manly dignified response, or was the 2011 team not great?

Hello Shep, there will be genuine concern about that. We will have to wait to see what his diagnosis is, but his reaction was not a good sign.

Almost perfect conditions last night at Suncorp. A little bit of moisture around, but 18° and light winds. The crowd was pretty sad, really. Not as many Kiwis as when we play Kiwi teams probably contributed. On the other hand, bar lines were non-existent. I will admit that Queenslanders are a little allergic to wet weather. But even allowing for that, crowd numbers are pretty dire.

Every week I get frustrated with referees, and I just assumed I am obviously unable to be objective; but once again last night this game was frustrating. It comes from the inconsistency between refs. Last night, first two penalties came from player hanging onto the ball. In one case it was a millisecond, and the player did not survive the clean out. In the second, the turn over was effective and MP won the ball; yet we penalise. The game should not be about the ref. Later in the game, he awarded a penalty against Qld for McReight going for the ball with one hand. Impossible? Tell Fijian’s that. You can’t penalise him for it! I don’t like many refs going around but at least Angus Gardiner would have looked at the big screen and reversed the try decision for the foot in touch. This guy just buried his head in the mud. Not good enough! There is a new Woke care for the refs, and I understand it in a game with so many rules open to interpretation; BUT there has got to be more effort from refs to be more consistent each week. Not “ this is my style”. How long do you need to have your hands on the ball before a penalty? For some it’s 5 seconds. For others it’s a fraction of that. Why do you penalise a player who stumbles offside, immediately retreats and is nowhere near the ball? Some refs are good with players unable to roll away providing they make an effort to not impede tve halfback. Others lick their lips for the opportunity to penalise. Some refs nail you for taking the halfback. Others don’t. The poor players take 30 mins each week to work out what tonight’s ref has decided to make his mark with….

He has been interviewed after games several times where he has expressed doubt about the legitimacy of cards given to his players. I have never seen him say, words to the effect of ‘we have to change’ and own it. Which all the best coaches do.

I think Tate is just wonderful, tough, smart, outsized courage, competitive always etc however his pass from the base is just not quick enough. Compare it with Kalani Thomas which is lightning fast. In my view that is the most important requirement of the position. His other qualities will always put him in the frame for selection and in some games that will give him and his team the edge. Ultimately however if his options around the ruck are stifled (think AB's, Ireland and Boks) then the ability to give the first five an extra half second becomes critical for the majority of the game. The failure to penalise the MP player who jumped onto McReight well after he had scored was the worst of several officials lapses. The number of penalties for infringements that had no bearing whatsoever on the play also present an issue that needs to be addressed. It's a difficult area and I am not sure there is an easy answer but it just makes the game very difficult to watch at times and I am sure frustrates all... I was at the game and watched a replay today. It confirmed my view that the assistant referees on the sideline should be provided with guide dogs.

I still wear shorts all year Soapit but the “Locals” dont like anything below 20deg. The last 18mths has been like living in NZ with the amount of rain days we have had but in NZ we never had the rain totals like Qld gets. I have had 2 weekends over 500 mil this year. Crazy numbers. I have to say Soapit Ive never been called Jesus Jacko before. LOL.
