Magic of the Cup: A-League champions bow out at hands of second-tier Sydney United

By News / Wire

Western United have suffered a shock round of 16 loss in the Australia Cup, losing 4-3 on penalties to National Premier Leagues NSW side Sydney United.

Prohibitive favourites to win Sunday’s round of 16 clash of the national knockout competition, Western United were stunned in the penalty shootout after the scores were locked 1-1 after 120 minutes.

A Western United counter-attack produced the first goal of the tie at Sydney United Sports Centre when Connor Pain latched onto a cross on the stroke of halftime.

But Sydney United found the equaliser on 55 minutes after Tariq Maia rifled a long-range shot that wrong-footed Western United goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Western United had their chance to seal the match inside 90 minutes but on more than one occasion they were denied by goalkeeper Danijel Nizic.

It was an entree of what was to come from Nizic, who saved Western United’s fifth penalty – diving low to his left to deny Steven Lustica – before Cristian Gonzalez calmly slotted the winner in the top right corner for Sydney United.

Sydney United, who finished eighth in the National Premier Leagues NSW competition this season, are the 10th member federation team to knock out an A-League club in the Cup’s history.

They are through to the quarter-final stage for the first time after four previous round of 16 appearances.

Last season’s NPL Queensland premiers Peninsula Power also advanced, beating Melbourne-based Green Gully 2-1.

The Crowd Says:

@Striker - I wouldn't call 1300 a great crowd and if they get a spot in the NSD they will need a lot more than that. A Sunday afternoon match, on a reasonably nice day, should have been upwards of 3000. Maybe they only have 1300 die-hard supporters?

you cant keep defending the undefendable when its the same NPL clubs nationally (not just in sydney and melbourne) that continually are involved in violence, and deorogatory chants at players and other spectators deflect the issue all you want saying 'were lound and proud etc' - all the various state federations know which NPL clubs are the trouble makers and the issues associated when they play rivals as for the wanderers the other week, i'm pretty sure i came on here and said im happy for those "fans" to be named, shamed, fined and banned if they were identified (which they werent) people assume the wanderers 'fans' who continually incite the violence are all of middle eastern heritage, some are but just like the victory they have there fair share with croatian heritage. im sure theres some reasonably good and tolerant fans at sydney united, but they're the ones who need to make a stand against the younger ones who bring up historial events from the past (that they werent part of, and more than likely dont understand) 16/17/18 year olds all singing stuff about tudjman, the 90's war, the world wars, ustase, ottman empire umjesto da bude dio rjesenja, ti si dio problema brate - steta sto to ne vidis

them, the last time i checked FFA said Croatian symbols and flags were permitted and these were present yesterday, who are you to give judgement on who can and can't speak the language, we love Australia and Croatia and we are not ashamed of that and never will no matter the trash coming from you, wasn't there trouble a few weeks ago between Sydney fc and central coast which hit the news, I didn't hear you on this forum criticise them once what double standards.

lies? like all the nationalistic banners being held up by people that aren't born there, don't speak a word of language, never went through the war etc etc than kind of rhetoric is not needed in the sport, you do realize its one certain nationality that continues to have problems at NPL level , right? doesnt matter iif its sa, qld, vic, nsw - clubs like sydney united, melbourne knights need to control there moronic fans. there was even idiotic melbourne victory fans, holding up Croatian war banners when they play adelaide united las season

Not sure what your reply has to do with football and the lies you are coming up with, leave politics out of this as the game should be proud of what was delivered yesterday more of that is needed, not souless games which is the norm in the A League in the last few years.

In terms of WU, nobody thought they’d be a big draw card (for an AL team), although they are a bigger draw then a fellow NPL team and that was shown in the bigger crowd. Although the size in general is certainly lower than previous years. While there’s been some great games, the crowds haven’t really been as high as most would hope for the Australia Cup.

What about the crowd against Western United though, if you only muster 1300 for a clash in the quarter finals against the A-league Champions . Doesn;t reflect on either side that well, Western United they can neither draw a crowd home or away. Sydney United their support seems to be fading away 500 in the previous cup game. Compare to that 2500 against hedeilberg in 2017.

It was the magic of the post , Western United sort of got a taste of their own medicine from Sydney United with the post being hit very often. Sydney United defence was well organised and a lot faster in retreating back than Melbourne Victory who allowed that easy tap in. Not sure what happened with the shot that beat Young either.

58 FC are yesterday’s heroes. Having said that, “if” they win the Australia Cup, & magically progress to the AFC, well, then I’ll eat my CCM’s hat (with accompanying Masterfoods sauce).

they also tend to have 17 year olds waving flags of the ustase and acting like theyre from the old country - when they've never even been there and cant even speak the language

an amazing minute of football by Pen Power to bury Green Gully. Two good goals in quick succession, bang bang, the second missed live on TV while the commentary team banged on about the first.

Coasty Boys they have more supporters than you guys have or will ever have, these clubs have passion and history that A League clubs like western united and others will never have.

It was an interesting game to watch. For the first 45 minutes it was WU by how much? They looked great in attack, but couldn’t’ get the ball between the posts - they hit them 3 x! They certainly need Priovic back or a good replacement. It was quite a fiery game too with as much push and shove as an NRL game. As the game wore on the draw didn’t surprise and penalties can be a lottery. Well done Sydney United - hoping they draw Sydney FC next.

I am guilty of reading this result last night with a bit of a wry smile. Well done to Sydney United. It's extraordinary that we are talking about a bottom half state league side knocking off the A-League champions.

Moi. Western United shouldn’t have lost that match. Champions verses potential NSD side.
