Is it really doom and gloom for the Wallabies?

By Tim J / Roar Rookie

In a Rugby Championship where all teams were up and down like a yo-yo were the Wallabies as bad as some have suggested and in a state of no return?

Are the refs not making the correct which the ref did but it was the timing of it that was the problem, or could it be that the Wallabies coaching staff are not researching the referees like they should be? The best teams want to know as much as they can about a ref, this will allow for better communication and respect between both parties.

What is the captain’s role? He provides the communication and leadership by proving it through his own actions and gameplay.

James Slipper was the most penalised player in The Rugby Championship and this must have had a negative impact on the less experienced players, seeing their captain not leading by example.

He also seems to be lacking the necessary communication with the team, and I have not seen him talking with the players and telling them to ‘reset’ when the pressure is on.

Dave Rennie is now looking like a coach under genuine pressure, and his unnecessary complaints about the Haka after Bledisloe1 was telling for me.

Rather than his focus being on the game itself only, and where his team were unable to hold out to win! He used the classic deflection tactic, while making this a ploy to fire up the players.

He has now said after Saturday night’s game that it could be a selection issue, does he really think that dropping players for the EOYT is a smart idea?

This again will add to players having to get used to each other’s game, I cannot see the combinations being a big success also with limited time together.

Then the players that are left out will not have great confidence moving forward, even the ones playing because they know a bad game and they are out.

Now many at this point in the article will say that there are no positives and that the national team are in a bad place, but are they really?

First what if this all happened next year with the Rugby World Cup on the door step, well thankfully it is 2022 and not 2023.

Michael Hooper, the captain and heart of the team, will be back, plus the injured players will be returning to bolster the team including the great one Quade Cooper (hopefully).

Blooding so many players will have added much needed depth unlike the past, with genuine competition for places.

Dave Rennie will have an idea of the team and squad that he will go with, just do not get too involved with the media though please.

When next year does roll around then this season will be mainly forgotten about, with the real prize insight.
There are always positives amongst the negatives. Sometimes you need to sift harder to find them but they are definitely there for the Wallabies.

Roarers, I am genuinely interested in your views about the situation and the team moving forward.

For twenty minutes it was 0-0. The All Blacks had to go up a notch to get on top, which they did. Australia remains a weak kicking team as they haven’t worked out what approach to use. So we kick for territory or we kick up and unders and hope for mistakes. Kicks need to be part of the game plan but short chips over the top need to happen more often. Much Wallaby kicking is too long . I would rather see the ball in hand and more old fashioned grinding away until the opportunities come. Look at how hard it was for the Wallabies to penetrate NZ defenders at Eden Park. Our rolling maul went nowhere so we should study how NZ was able to stifle it as we concede lots of these tries.

The wallabies are clearly not fit enough and need to learn better tackling technique. Also they should give up some of the gym work as it is slowing them down. Put the biggest pack on the field at the start of each game and keep the little fast guys for the second half. Hooper needs to be one of the second half guys. Fix the scrum for heavens sake. Pick two of the largest logs available and train them to stay upright. Always throw to the front of the line out. Short kickoffs always. Never box kick, it is stupid. Run the ball like your fans want you to but remember each runner should be looking at support and providing support. We should be seeing 5 or 6 passes between forwards as they advance. You turn and give the ball behind. And for goodness sake can someone in world rugby explain the offside rule to referees. I’m sick of seeing the All Blacks smother oppositions with their off side tactics. Except in Europe where the referees won’t tolerate it.

Prediction: the All Blacks will base themselves in the Northern Hemisphere for at least 2 months per year so they can get some tough competition to pick up their standard.

Tim the MadKiwi, "The AFL and League are well ahead but the Wallabies have always done well in comparison". You comment is sadly out of time. If you were talking 1991-2003, yes, you would be on the money. But like the Rolling Stones song, "baby, baby, baby, you're out of time". The Wallabies are no longe competitive with AFL & NRL. And that's another non-sensical thing here, we're comparing a national team with two footy codes! Or, if you like, one team with either 18 or 15. Doesn't make any sense at all.....

The problem for the Wallabies is very simple; it is a minor sport in Australia and therefore does not attract the best athletes. The best athletes play Rugby League, AFL, Soccer and Basketball these days. The talent pool is too small to compete and be successful at International level against Countries where the game is not the 4th ranked football code. Here, it only has the private school network, and most of the best schoolboys playing Rugby are actually League players getting a free education and killing time before they start with an NRL club. Australian Rugby's best days are but a distant memory....

But if there aren't any Brumbies around, who will there be left for you to blame when everything continues to head south?

I was only making the point that he could have kept that part behind closed doors to motivate the team rather than answering it to the public. No disrespect was meant, as I am positive about the Wallabies for next season. Scum and I got it sorted so no problem there. It was my first Rugby article so I will take this onboard, hopefully you enjoyed the article overall.

I agree Republican, the AFL and League are well ahead but the Wallabies have always done well in comparison. With the right processes in place they have a real shot next season! Thank you for your response and honesty.

Thank you Pass, appreciate it. What a great commonsense post mate, a great read and you are totally correct with it. Media do love to beat something up to create controversy so they stay relevant, but do not understand the negative affects it can have. I for one have a positive outlook for the team next year, as 2022 it has been about player development. Once again I appreciate your feedback, and your honesty.

The only doom & gloom is around Union supporters expectations v the reality of the codes status here. Its a non code in Australia relatively speaking - always was and always will be. In that respect, the national side punch above their weight in my opinion.

By the way, I hand the baton over to you to write an article. You be would great at it with your knowledge and easy going nature. Haha, my days in the spotlight are now over Tim. But I'm very happy to encourage you and others (like chook) to continue to write articles. I would like to see sheek writing again, he was very good and all opinions count. It's quite inspiring to see how others interpret and focus on the issues we face in our fav sport. Only good can come of it.
