Ten-man City down dreadful Roar

By News / Wire

Melbourne City lost Taras Gomulka to a red card in the 47th minute but two goals from Jamie Maclaren secured a 2-0 A-League Men win over Brisbane Roar.

Referee Tim Danaskos’ decision was checked by Video Assistant Referee Chris Beath and given the all-clear.

City coach Patrick Kisnorbo did not believe it was a red-card offence.

“I didn’t see any malice in terms of Taras’ foot going over the ball in terms of studs … but you’ve got to move on,” he said.

“I was really happy with the way we defended and our mindset to work hard for the team. We showed great character.”

City big guns and Socceroos duo Mathew Leckie and Jamie Maclaren both fired in the win to further press their World Cup claims.

City’s defensive midfielder Aiden O’Neill tormented his former club and controlled play superbly in a first half where the visitors had eight shots on goal and enjoyed 71 per cent of possession.

Leckie was involved in everything from the left wing and had two shots saved by Roar goalkeeper Jordan Holmes in the first half.

Both of the visitors’ goals came in the opening period.

Sports opinion delivered daily

City were the most dangerous with the ball and made the Roar pay for a defensive lapse in the 22nd minute.

Andrew Nabbout let rip and centre-forward Maclaren back-heeled into the net after Thomas Lam had neatly laid the ball down from a corner.

Sixteen minutes later, Roar defender Connor Chapman brought down City’s Callum Talbot in the box and conceded a penalty.

Maclaren was clinical in scoring his second and went perilously close to adding a third with a vicious shot that went just over the bar.

City’s defence held firm despite losing Gomulka to take their season start to two wins from two.

Roar winger Carlo Armiento was quiet in the first half but became more involved in the second, as did striker Charlie Austin as Brisbane looked to take advantage of their extra man.

Roar coach Warren Moon described City as “the benchmark of the competition”.

“But that doesn’t take away from our performance which I believe was poor,” he said.

“There were certain things we did that were really sloppy and below what I expect from this team.”

Yeah, that is a dilemma. It is bad for Moon to play him and also bad not to play him. Anyhow, it is the main coach job. Stienmann is a defending mid fielder? Isn’t he? When he made wrong passes at the middle, real danger happened to the defenders and the goalie. If Stienmann plays together with O’Shea, it is a duplication. I would choose O’Shea. Then Akbari and Danzaki occupies 2 places. Where should Stienmann be? What would be the tactic if Stienmann is included. Who is to be displaced? Obviously, Stienmann is not in form recently. How can Moon make him good again? Recently, I have noticed a lady called “Stephanie Gill” who proclaims to be a “performance coach”, having the experience for 2 decades. Is B Roar still using her service? Can Stiemann be changed? Whatever, the main coach is held responsible.

Some really great insight there WAZ, but I disagree that Moon doesn’t have a plan B. First half was clearly disappointing play. I do not want to see my team parking the bus in a 2 line defensive block for the entire season. I am definitely not going to pay the higher ticket prices at Suncorp this year to watch that. The tactic may work to nullify an opponent on occasion, but a quality attacking team like MC will at some point break it down. But he showed at the half that he can see the issues and make changes. A shift of formation back to the 442 shape that saw us clinch sone success in the back half of last year. Injection of “nothing to lose” and “fearless” youth also shook the game (a little) albeit that bench without Mileusnic and Hore lack any depth of quality. Granted they did not get goals we needed, but the play was positive and encouraging. The problem is that his Plan A just does not work. Trewin at CM with O’Shay???? 4 CBs on the park and wondering why no possession or ball play. Akbari on the bench??? When Moon does play him I the middle of the park he always puts in a good shift defensively and with his quick short mvt of the ball. Chapman over a Trewin in the back line???? No comment needed. Apparently Zabala is a midfielder, but never seen him play anywhere other than RB. I feel we have the players to be competitive but he is simply not getting the best out of them from the first whistle.

The Den sounded like they've improved in numbers so that's a good thing at least.

Didn’t most of the team? and what about the first two games this season - bad passing is the norm surely (Jay O’Shea can’t seem to beat the first man at a set piece!). But my point with Stienmann is not “is he playing well” but why is a visa player marginalised, drawing a $180k pay cheque, and not available for selection? What a waste of 1 in 20 available adult players (1 in 19 if we factor out Brown). At Nix Stienmann was considered one of the best DM’s in the comp, what have Roar done to him?

The pitch was fine, in really good shape (it’s not been used for a couple of months but the concerts start next month so that’ll be the end of it).

JB - yes there needs to be some serious change to get the club back to where it belongs. As you indicate it is the only club in Qld in the A league. Surely they can find 11 players that cut the mustard at professional level!? I just watch WSW best Victory and refuse to believe Qld can't put a better group of players togey than what was on show Friday night. Agree there are players you mention who really aren't up to scratch. What is the point of Brisbane roar these days? Just making up the numbers? They certainly don't pose the threat they used to and haven't for years. Admin ppl come and go but fans have long memories and I well remember when the team was streaks ahead of the standard delivered over recent years. But I guess they are accountable to no one. Diminishing crowd numbers appear to be inevitable unless someone gets a good old fashioned kick up the arse and the get real.

Mid - there are multiple reasons why our game enters these "dark" days and in the Roar case it is not difficult to follow. Since the departure of AP the club has gone through a series of changes and the coaching side of the equation has to be analysed. Mulvey was left with the AP team and it came as no surprise when that same group of players finished third in the comp but to the informed viewer things were changing and the next year the team performance slipped even more. Fowler, experienced at all levels of the game (at playing level) both in England and Australia, came to the club and brought with him what is regarded as the "spine" of a good team, 2 centre -backs, a midfielder (playmaker), and a striker, all of whom Fowler must have felt were needed, and, despite some "shenanigans" going on at top management level all but one of those imports had to be classed as successful for, with the addition of Young and Neville, the team had to be classed as one of the best defensive teams in the ALM. With Fowler's departure the upper management were forced into decision making and it is then the present problems have taken root. A new coach was needed and the Management saw fit to pick a young lad with little or no experience at professional level. What was worse was that the new coach appears to have sold the idea that Roar would be better concentrating on their own youth teams when ALM team replacements were needed. This in itself is a myth, young local players have to nursed into playing as full time pros and it is into this area the present situation has arisen. Roar are now a shadow of their championship winning team and it going to take a mammoth effort at all levels of management to "stop the rot" and get back to winning ways. jb

As a Mariner fan I understand more than most what its like to have a poor owner and I have given some through before posting this... but in the dark days especially under Mulvey & arguably Okon as well the team [i.e. Mariners] just did not have heart and passion, added to this was poor recruitment decisions. BR look similar to me, maybe Moon is out of his depth given the issues around him......

TK - the official crowd was given as 7890 a drop of 600 from the previous week, and if the team continue to play the way they did yesterday that figure will continue to drop and we all know what that will ultimately mean. It is about time that someone in the Roar upper management learned the fact that the one sure way of increasing crowd numbers is to get a winning team on the park and this fact has been proved all across the football world. The team, and the way it played yesterday is a sure - fire way of chasing fans away and that can only have one outcome. Surely it is not too much to ask that Roar, as the only full - time professional team in Queensland, can get us back to the glory days when Roar were regarded as the top team in Australia. jb

Best part of the night (well, only enjoyable part of the night) was bagging their keeper for three goal kicks straight in to touch. Agree on the long haul to Redcliffe, especially for a 2PM kick off on what’s likely to be 30C in the sun … the club is a mess at the moment with no coherent direction on or off the pitch.

100% on Steinmann. Most AL teams are going to live and die on their imports. If you’ve got one that can’t even make the squad, you’re going to have a bad time. Nice to be back near some bars and restaurants for pre and post-game, but man that was not entertaining to watch. Good luck getting anyone to journey out to Redcliffe dishing that up.

Great job publishing an article on Roars match after the game, we need this on every game, every week please  After the game with MacArthur there were several key questions to be raised - the common thought was Roar did “better than expected” (they did) but mist debate stopped there. The uncommon thoughts were about a similarity in problems to the previous season, questionable set up and tactics from the coach, and a bench that hardly enabled tactical flexibility. So on to last night. City had done their homework (who wouldn’t) and cut out the switch to the left wing and overloaded the pocket Danzaki/Austin like to drop in to deny them ball. That seemed to stump Roar. I’d like to say that Citys two tactical efforts were sufficient to disrupt Roar but the truth is, Roars performance was totally inept (I can’t think of another word for it - and even at their lowest under Aloisi there was nothing this inept) Having a half time xG is ZERO was laughable. Only it wasn’t funny. The red card (sorry, but another definite red - studs up, into an opponents leg … do we really need to be breaking players legs before coaches teach players when & how to challenge?) should have changed things but Roar showed no urgency and no desire to get back in the game! Why? City looked the most likely to score on the second half with Roar unable to change things up. I watch Lions a lot, and as much as Moon is highly regarded there the comments were often Moon has “Plan a” and if that doesn’t work he has “Plan A” So it proved last night (and in the cup where they struggled to compete with three NPL sides). The 5-4-1 set up didn’t work , the switch to the left didn’t work, so we kept st it all night. But if you want to summarise Roars problems this season you can sum them up in two words: Matt Stienmann! Where is he? Why is he there ? And who has an $180,000/year player upset so much that he can’t even make the bench??

The game was no good on the eyes and as a neutral i got bored and switch channels a lot of times, I honestly through Roar would take it to City being at home. But no they played woeful like a state league team and have no idea on how to score. Enough is enough, either bring something to the table or fold. Roar is dragging the league down and should be replaced with a Canberra side.

I’ve been following the Roar since game 1 of the League, and I honestly think that this is worst Roar side I have seen. Mind you, Melbourne were horrible too. The game was unwatchable for all but the most committed football fans.

Brainstrust - The problems inherent in this Roar team go far beyond a single incident involving Austin's positioning for crosses that in themselves lack accuracy. Like our mutual friend below, C&C, it was hard to try and analyse what tactical system was being tried or adhered to. Jack Hingert is probably the veteran of this squad and yet it appears he is to be used as a wing back, probably the most demanding position in a team if played correctly. In this game he also was in direct opposition to one of City's better players in Leckie and the demands on Hingert showed long before the end. The 3 centre back formation in Aldred, Neville, and Trewin. would suggest that if a 3-4-3 formation was being tried then another 2 positions have to be examined, that of defensive midfielder and left wingback two positions that help to supply "go forward" to the rest of the team. In Chapman and Armietto. the 2 incumbents, I would suggest neither of them are cut out for these roles and it shows in their performances. Is Chapman a better centreback or is Armietto a better out and out left winger.? I'll leave that to you. So what is left to analyse??. O'Shea, Austin, two very experienced players are left to create and or score through the talents of Danzaki or Knowles. two very inexperienced players to the ALM. and it is this "engine room" the lack of goals has it's origins. Then we get to substitutions and their usage to alter the game. All 5 were used in this game and I think it would be correct to say not one "improvement" was apparent in the Roar team performance. The aforementioned wingbacks were replaced as were Knowles and Armietto, while Chapman was replaced by another regular fringe player in Akbari. By this time any thoughts of what system Roar were trying to employ had gone straight out the window with 11 disjointed individuals with a one- man advantage, hardly bothering Glover in any way. Something drastic has to take place if this situation is to be turned around and that does not mean a juggling act with players but a confirmed knowledge of modern football and how it is played. jb

Two games, no goals. It's not just the lack of goals, it's the minimal number of opportunities being created. Even with 10 men, Melb city were never really bothered. As for the red card, meh, you see that sort of thing red carded time and again, I don't bother about the intricacies of whether it crossed this line, or whether there was malintent, or whatever, it looked bad enough to get a red card. End of.

I support both Brisbane Roar & Millwall. What they have had in common for some time is an inability to score goals & their fans have been critical however whilst strikers need to “look for the ball”, they are heavily dependent on receiving good service. If that component is lacking in teams they will continue to struggle to achieve consistency & subsequent success.
