Victory braced for heavy response to fan violence

By News / Wire

Melbourne Victory will present their response to Football Australia’s show cause notice for their fans’ violent derby pitch invasion, with the A-League powerhouse bracing for point deductions, fines and crowd bans.

Victory have until 9am AEDT today to show why they “should not face serious sanctions for bringing the game into disrepute” after their active fans stormed the AAMI Park pitch on Saturday night, forcing the abandonment of their A-League Men match.

Melbourne City goalkeeper Tom Glover was hit by a metal bucket wielded by a pitch invader, suffering a facial laceration and a concussion. Referee Alex King was also injured.

A television cameraman was hurt after being struck by a flare, while two security guards were also injured.

Victoria Police say about 50 flares were lit in the stands with at least three thrown onto the field, while about $120,000 worth of damage was done to the venue.

FA has made it clear it will dish out tough sanctions to Victory while the game’s governing body also needs to decide whether the result of Saturday’s derby will stand – City were leading 1-0 before the match was abandoned.

The proximity to Victory’s next game – away to Western United at AAMI Park on Boxing Day – may mean FA hands out interim sanctions in the short term.

Two Victory fans have already copped lifetime bans from Football Australia, preventing them from any association with the game, including as spectators of FA-sanctioned matches or as registered players.

The 23-year-old man who struck Glover with the bucket has been charged by Victoria Police with a string of offences, including violent disorder. A 19-year-old man is also alleged to have assaulted a security guard.

A further five men were identified by Victoria Police on Tuesday, with another five people still to be found.

I’m a Victory Member for about a dozen years. I was NOT at the match, I should not be punished in any way for the actions of those idiots who invaded the pitch. City, AAMI Park and Victoria Police were in charge of the facility and they all should be held accountable for THEIR failures.

You could be right. Geez, sounds like a soap opera. Pity about the consequences these goons can bring.

Pratten Park was caused by crazy refereeing, Gomez kicked Soper in the head but Soper got sent off. That refereeing could have caused a riot anywhere in the world. The crowd was older as well, it was very random , a few went nuts and just went after anybody, some went after Pezzano and other players, most went for the ref but not to actually bash him otherwise it could have been very ugly. Stuff like Melbourne Knights vs Perth Glory, more thuggery happened, Perth fans were bashed, the players fought off the crowd at the team bus, security guard was bashed unconscious and coach punched. According to the Knights it was Despotovski flashing them the three fingers that set it off but Despotovski denies it.

Blue and White Brigade was the second one , the first failed because they wanted to charge a membership fee. BWB they were the ones accused of being Uncle Toms. I can remember their leader Tunna doing his no flare no flare like Arnolds no foul , so he was the leader and they dump him. Northern Terrace did they get banned I thought they were always boycotting which might have given you the impression they were banned. Did they also spit the dummy big time at one point and go away. The RBB its their sub groups you have to worry about and them appearing after Sydney FC games .

I think the OSM came out of the North Terrace which has been previously banned. Seeing a trend here? Most other active groups I think have generally ok relationships with their clubs. For example I'm not involved with nor have I ever been involved with the Cove but from watching from a distance they have generally got on with the club with the only two exceptions being last weeks announcement and them walking out when wanting Farina sacked several years ago (though to be fair majority of supporters were alongside them on these issues). The RBB has had problems in the past but at present they seem to be run reasonably well. They were very good at the recent Sydney derby.

Like Trump supporters and anti-vaxxers. Would not surprise me if some of this same rabble were out protesting against COVID vaccinations, etc. Mindless, clueless gits.

If we go back to the introduction of Melbourne Heart. Horda stole banners from Melbourne Heart groups, who knows how. In many cases the Cove has had former members of the Cove who went to the RBB including Middleby's attackers use their inside knowledge to thieve stuff including knowing a storeroom at the SFS. The most amazing incident was when four Heart fans who went after a Horda fan who they suspected had stolen the banner. This Horda fan was onto the blower to the police quicker than a rat up a drain pipe and somehow managed to get the Heart fans arrested for attempted kidnapping. So much for nor wanting the police, there could be some connection between Melbourne police and Horda the stuff they have gotten away with. There was an attack on the Sydney FC away hotel which included a computer thrown through the doorway. Horda are compulsive stalkers of away fans that visit Melbourne. How do they claim they got rid of Horda, if you look at it they got rid of the other Melbourne support groups and let the Horda OSM controlled take over. The only people charged were people taking on Horda and it was 4 on 1 not the 10 on 1 that is Hordas usual calling sign.

Always concerned Roberto but this had nothing on Pratten Park in 1985 Sydney Olympic -v- Sydney City(Hakoah) where control was totally lost. SBS had some great coverage. Love to know MVFC's response but I expect FA to be measured.

Don't concern yourself Nick - Victory will be hit very, very hard on this occasion, and most people aren't going to bat an eyelid about how hard they get hit.

In the present case, a fair bit. OSM have been given a long leash by the Victory management, despite probably being aware that they have members from other banned ultras groups. In short, you don't muck around with these groups. You make it clear they are not welcome - you hit them between the eyes, you make sure they are not associated with your club. They can go join the WU supporter groups! Goodness knows they need the numbers, and Tarneit is more suited to the backgrounds of these sorts of people.

28 and 26 year olds from Sunbury, Digger's Rest and St Albans - might explain a lot! I mean, if you're 28 years old, fair dinkum, what are you doing running around with a bunch of teenagers pretending to be ultras. Get a life!!

When did OSM come about. There is a history in Melbourne of accusing the supporter group that cooperates with the club of being an Uncle Tom and their leaders of being informers and then abandoning them and forming a new group. All the other clubs notice have the same supporters group at least the major one. I dont know how the club knows who to work with. The reality is the major problem has come from the media sympathisers Simon Hill and co, and the online army of social media goons. Why no sanctions against them when they are to blame.

Protests about human rights being stripped away and bodily autonomy….Vic police shoot you with rubber bul lets, tear gas, taze and charge you…. That's not what the protests were about, but don't let me get in the way of a good conspiracy

I generally agree with this. Though I think that Victory as a club also needs to get slugged financially with this - they aren't complicit in what OSM did, but its fair to say they haven't been tough enough on OSM over the years given the significant priors that the OSM has. Relationships between clubs and active groups is never going to be perfect but the OSM clearly thinks they are a law unto themselves.
