Round 6 team lists Late Mail: Raiders gun to miss Broncos clash, Manly star out, Panther hobbled, Lane back

Gun front-rower Joe Tapine will miss Canberra’s trip to Brisbane on Saturday night as the Raiders continue to be hit by personnel issues while dealing with poor form.

Tapine’s wife went into labour on Friday morning and the 28-year-old New Zealander will remain with her in Canberra for the birth of his first child.

He joins a growing list of absentees including Jack Wighton, Xavier Savage and Nick Cotric, meaning the 1-4 Raiders will try to snap out of their form slump without arguably their best middle, half, fullback and outside back.

Canberra are also struggling for back-up halves with Matt Frawley out for six weeks after breaking his hand in the loss to Penrith.

Injury-plagued Canberra veteran Jarrod Croker has been named to play his first game since May in a boost to his bid to reach 300 NRL games. Croker will assume the Raiders captaincy, marking game 293 for the centre.

Josh Schuster is enduring a turbulent start to life as Manly’s five-eighth and will finish the weekend having played only two of a possible five games to start 2023.

The former second-rower missed the opening weekend with a calf injury and his latest setback will raise further questions as to his ability to withstand the physical demands of a switch to the halves.

“It’s been a little bit of an interrupted start for him but it’s a long year,” coach Anthony Seibold said of Schuster’s quad injury. “We need to be smart about it. If he injures it more, instead of a one-to-two-week injury, it could potentially blow out to five or six weeks.”

Youngster Kaeo Weekes will now start in the halves for the first time at NRL level, partnering Daly Cherry-Evans against Penrith on Saturday.

Sea Eagles winger Christian Tuipulotu is out for three weeks with a knee injury while bench forward Ben Trbojevic is looking at twice as long out due to a hamstring tear.

Panthers prop James Fisher-Harris (knee) and second-rowers Liam Martin (hamstring) and Luke Garner (rib) won’t suit up this Saturday against Manly. 

The Panthers have named Matt Eisenhuth to start in the front row for Saturday’s game but did not put a timeframe on Fisher-Harris’ return until Friday morning. “It’s probably five weeks,” coach Ivan Cleary said. “As it turned out, I’m glad he didn’t go back on (against Canberra) because he would’ve been at more risk.”

Sharks skipper Dale Finucane, Warriors forward Marata Niukore and Canterbury winger Jayden Okunbor have copped hip-drop suspensions on the chin after receiving grade-two charges for the dangerous tactic.

Finucane will miss three matches after Cronulla’s bye this week for his 75th-minute hit on Warriors fullback Charnze-Nicoll-Klokstad because it is his third offence while Niukore has been banned two games for his incident involving Siosifa Talakai in the same game as it’s his second offence. Okunbor accepted a one-game suspension rather than risking two weeks at the judiciary due to his clean record.

Losing Okunbor is a blow to the Bulldogs for the traditional Good Friday clash with South Sydney. Second-rower Raymond Faitala-Mariner (concussion) and young prop Franklin Pele (broken arm) will be missing while fellow forwards Max King (eye) and Jacob Preston (hand) are in doubt but have been named in the team.

Canterbury coach Cameron Ciraldo on Thursday said he would leave it right up until kick-off before confirming the availability of Preston and King.

Tevita Pangai jnr is still sidelined with his calf strain and Viliame Kikau has already been ruled out after copping a head knock at training on Saturday.

He almost opted to bring Pangai back early but said he wanted to take a cautious approach with the Tongan wrecking-ball, who hasn’t played a game this season.

Eels winger Bailey Simonsson accepted a ban of two matches for his high shot on Roosters captain James Tedesco rather than risking a three-game suspension by contesting the grade-three careless high tackle charge. 

The Eels have received a boost with Shaun Lane back after recovering from a broken jaw suffered in the pre-season.

North Queensland are also in the midst of a five-day turnaround with forwards Heilum Luki and Jordan McLean unable to face the Dolphins in Townsville on Friday night due to hamstring problems. 

Warriors captain Tohu Harris is taking a wait and see approach with his knee injury and while he took part in a light training at Mt Smart Stadium on Wednesday the lock wouldn’t confirm if he’ll take his place against Newcastle at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

“The knee is going alright,” Harris said. “I’m just ticking the boxes as they come along and trying to give myself every opportunity to get back on the field. It’s too hard to call at the moment but I’m very optimistic. It was hard watching the game on the weekend, so I just want to be out there on the field with the boys. But I have to make sure I’m doing the right things.”

St George Illawarra forward Jaydn Su’A injured his calf in the win over the Dolphins but he has been named to play this weekend.

The Dolphins are stretched for playmakers with veteran Anthony Milford (hamstring) joining Sean O’Sullivan (pectoral) on the sidelines for at least a month. Kodi Nikorima has been recalled.
