Magic Round team lists Late Mail: Dolphins' double blow, Turbo OK, Broncos change coach? Dragons duo axed

By The Roar / Editor

Dolphins captain Jesse Bromwich and centre Brenko Lee have been ruled out of the Magic Round clash with Cronulla on Saturday.

They have both succumbed to hamstring injuries so Poasa Faamausili and JJ Collins are options to replace Bromwich in the pack while rookie centre Valynce Te Whare is set to make his debut for Lee.

Manly have received a massive boost in Magic Round with Tom Trbojevic cleared to return after his groin injury kept him out last week in the loss to the Gold Coast.

While the influential fullback is good to go, older brother Jake Trbojevic (calf) is out but younger sibling Ben Trbojevic (hamstring) returns.

“Tom trained fully on Tuesday evening,” coach Anthony Seibold said on Thursday. “He’s in and he’s a big in.”

Manly five-eighth Josh Schuster is going to need a few weeks to regain his fitness after a thigh problem while centres Brad Parker and Tolu Koula are back early from knee injuries. Front-rower Toff Sipley has copped a ban of three matches for a grade-two crusher tackle on Gold Coast’s Phillip Sami .

Brisbane also have star power returning in the form of Payne Haas with the prop and five-eighth Ezra Mam coming back after serving their one-game hip-drop bans.

John Cartwright stepped in to coach on Thursday after Kevin Walters was struck down by the flu. The assistant took charge of the side’s captain’s run and Walters is no certainty to be at the game. If Cartwright takes control in the coach’s box it will not be unfamiliar territory for the 57-year-old who was mentor of the Gold Coast for eight seasons.

Dragons coach Anthony Griffin has dropped star centre Zac Lomax in a bid to end the team’s four-game losing streak at Magic Round.

The high-priced outside back has been below his best this season and has paid the price for the club’s 2-6 record as Griffin fights to prove he should have his contract extended beyond this year.

Lomax has been left out of the squad altogether after reportedly reacting angrily to the news while hooker Jacob Liddle has been relegated to the reserves.

St George Illawarra take on fellow strugglers Wests Tigers on Sunday in Brisbane and a heavy loss could consign the Dragons to last spot on the ladder.

The Roosters copped a double blow from their win over the Warriors in Auckland with Brandon Smith (neck) and Paul Momirovski (shoulder) suffering injuries. Momirovski is out but Smith, who was taken to hospital via ambulance as a precautionary measure, has been named to play against the Cowboys on Sunday.

Roosters veteran Jared Waerea-Hargreaves sat out the Warriors game due to a back injury but the Kiwi prop will return for Magic Round in Brisbane.

Titans fullback AJ Brimson (hamstring) is out for at least a few weeks while five-eighth Kieran Foran has been given the green light. Foran required six stitches in his finger, a pain-killing needle in his toe and strapping on his knee to make it through the 26-10 win over his old side but was named in the team list on Tuesday afternoon.

He was still a chance of dropping out of the squad pending the results of scans, but on Wednesday morning, was cleared of serious injury. He needs only to pass a fitness test on Friday to line up against the Eels, another of his former clubs.

Wests Tigers centre Brent Naden was hit with a grade-two shoulder charge for his hit on Penrith second-rower Zac Hosking in his side’s upset 12-8 victory over the Panthers on Saturday night. He will miss three matches after submitting an early guilty plea, rather than risking a fourth if he fought the charge and lost.

Meanwhile, Cowboys forward Jeremiah Nanai has accepted a four-game ban after submitting an early guilty plea for Grade 3 Dangerous Contact in the heavy loss to the Sharks.

He would have risked a five-match ban if he fought the charge at the judiciary for his controversial hip-drop tackle on Sharks forward Braden Hamlin-Uele, who has been ruled out for a month with medial ligament damage in his left knee.

The cupboard is bare at the Dragons with no injured players coming back this week so besieged coach Anthony Griffin is looking to use Ben Hunt at hooker in a mid-game switch when young half Jayden Sullivan comes onto the field.

Star centre Zac Lomax and hooker Jacob Liddle have paid the price for their poor form in the team’s terrible start to the year by getting dropped this weekend.

Max Feagai moves into the centres with Mikaele Ravalawa returning on the wing from a hamstring tear.

You said Queensland is the dominant Rugby League state. So you’re stating that based purely on 3 games each season evidently? Ever take a look at the players playing in your Queensland Cup. There’s an absolute plethora of NSW players who haven’t quite made it to NRL level playing in it. So they must be better than many Queenslanders who aren’t in those teams. If we’re going to go down to the who beats who . How many Premiership Wins have Queensland sides featured in recently? How often does the Queensland Cup team win the interstate challenge at the end of the year either? Even with a heap of NSW players in their sides. It’s been a doddle for the NSW Cup teams to win those games recently. Just saying you shouldn’t get to carried away with your bias , based on 3 games.

The sooner Griffin’s gone the better. I’d hand the reins to Carr and Wolfe for the remainder of 2023, appoint a new coach for 2024 and move on from Griffin.

Agree with most of that - the reserves deserve a shot in first grade if they are playing well enough and the first graders aren't. I reckon there was 2 passes 'on' to his winger that he didn't bother to throw in the last game. Maybe Hook said 'make sure you get those last passes away.....' and he just didn't do it

Sending this player back to reserves will fix his goal kicking up as well as all those little gremlins that have crept into his current game under his current coaching team, no worries at all :silly: He’s not named in the NSW Cup team list as of now but that could change. Maybe a different coach could give him some good advice and steer him in the right direction. It doesn’t sit well with me though. It’s like telling a kid he has to go back to kindergarten because he is not good enough instead of working on getting him up to scratch like a good teacher / coach could, should and would. Griffin and his offsiders are not up to par and that’s where I see the main problem.

Well said Snowy, a lot of the time, Hunt only seems to know what he is doing and the rest of the team are on another page, which to me comes back to Griffin, and a lack of game plan. I’m searching for answers to our mediocrity and some of his solutions are just plain dumb, drop Liddle and keep Mbye? If you look at most of the tries in the past few weeks scored against us, Mbye is usually in the frame where the break/mistake is made. Liddle has added spark when he has been on this year, and his dropping just floors me

Really. Brisbane at the top . Two of their best 4 players are Haas, Reynolds . They looked like a shadow of their former selves without Haas. They were nothing much without Reynolds. Lucky Mam came along , as who are all of these other star halves that Queensland are producing? ( Got a couple that have been around a long time in Munster , DCE I suppose. ) Then the centres are an Englishman & a New South Welshman. Cowboys have a NSW veteran at halfback. Dolphins had to buy Penrith halves. Titans bought a veteran NSW 5/8 & have an alright only half. Walker at the Roosters isn’t the star many up there were predicting. Just don’t want you to get too carried away by all these star players Queensland are producing.

Who knows what happens with Manly this time around? The Broncos look very handy all across the paddock but Manly's backs have been reinforced and if Turbo and Koula are 100% maybe a win is feasible. Manly's forwards have had a good run with injuries this season and should be able to match up to the Broncos if they fire up. You'd expect the Broncos to bounce back strongly and the same should happen to the Eagles ........maybe. Karl Lawton has impressed me in limited time this season. Keep an eye on the way he hits in defence , it's very effective.

Only because having more games in Queensland doesn't grow the sport. The game went backwards in New Zealand and Victoria during covid (oh yeah, didn't queens land get the entire competition during this time). The game is virtually dead in Perth, gee those folks are even having to go watch Union games its getting that bad, meanwhile they have turned off life support in the rest of the country (but never mind hey, QLD got a new team, a Grand Final and Origin games every year). Growth comes from getting new fans watching the game but new fans don't get created if little Johnny has never even heard of the sport. Which brings us right back to my original point.

Dropping Lomax isn’t the right call. You think he has the big ego and doesn’t concentrate on his footy but I have a different view. He doesn’t have an inflated ego from what I can see. He is a passionate Dragons player who never stops working in every game. His stats will attest to that I’m sure. Griffin on the other hand has pushed him across to the other side of the field and I have no idea why. He is using a different tee for kicking and is changing the style of his kicking at whose behest? He was a very decent goal kicker before Hook came along and got psd off with him. His style of coaching is stifling to the young centre who had all that potential and now is struggling. I hope Feagai does well but the longer Griffin stays the more stifling of intuitive players will go on. I don’t rate him as a coach. I never have but I was prepared to support him until I wasn’t and that happened about two years ago. I tried and now I have failed and wish like heck he was going going gone. I expect all the gurus find Ben Hunt an amazing player who makes those around him better players as a good half back should do, but I am not seeing that from him. He is stifling his halves partner and the centres around him and stodgifying their style from this rookie’s view. I am failing at supporting our captain of late and maybe I wish he would move on with Griffin. I think Hunt is a very skilful player in his own right and working with Hook elevated him to almost winning the big prize. He was making things happen. That’s grand and all sure. However he is not making great things happen atm and he can’t continue with trying to win games based on his singular brilliance alone. The players around him are at sixes and sevens. A half back needs to fix that surely? That’s a half back’s job. Ben Hunt is no doubt a player worth signing to any team but I kinda wished our team didn’t sign him for the extra two years. That’s just me. So I wish to wave goodbye to Griffin and maybe Hunt too if he is adamant that he will not play at nine with Liddle, who has been dropped to the back of the reserve bench for… something? I agree with the rest.
