Panthers are good even very good but they have lost that air of invincibility. Reckon a couple of teams will get them this season.

I quite liked the idea. Possibly not well executed but the idea was good.

Careful ……..

Storm slaughter second-rate Souths as 'a myriad of errors' hammer the final nail into Demetriou's coaching coffin

Wighton is a far more effective player than Trell. The latter may come up with the occasional flash of brilliance but carries way too much baggage. Give me Wighton over Trell every day of the week.

Why souths tolerate the likes of Trell whilst abusing Burgess and especially Walker is beyond me. It looks like they have got their sense of what is important all wrong.

Except that when the Storm entered the comp, there was virtually no rugby in the city, League was dictated too by Ch9 who had first and last bidding rights over any tv contract, were in complete turmoil after the superleague wars and were virtually bankrupt. Hardly any League clubs were making a profit with most relying on Leagues clubs to support them as on going concerns which was something that Melbourne never had.

Your comment “The success off the field is a direct result of the success on the field” I would say is the exact opposite of actually happened with the Storm and indeed what I have observed to be true in most cases. Any successful sporting club has to have great leadership off the field if they are ever to succeed on it. Clubs that go through turmoil at board level usually under perform of the rugby field. The entire club becomes embroiled in that turmoil which spills out everywhere. A lack of confidence in how things are run in a club always undermines confidence in players on the field.
I believe that Melbourne were successful because they quickly established great leadership (with one possible exception). They had a philosophy of excellence which became infectious throughout the organisation. They recruited only the best and only those who bought into their vision no matter how skilled they were and they employed people who were uniquely driven to exceed.
Rugby should not throw away money on any risky venture but what I am saying is that the value that the Rebels bring to Rugby far exceeds what is shown on their balance sheet. I am also saying that the premise that Rugby cannot suceed in the Melbourne AFL dominated environment has been proven wrong by what the Storm has achieved. RA is throwing money at far more risky ventures than the rebels who are largely known and understood. A proper governance environment by RA would also mitigate any risk that does exist.

“are already captured by league, which is richer, already established in Melbourne”
This is very much a hindsight view. If you turned the clock back to 2000, you would see a very different picture of League in Melbourne. Tonights Melbourne game against South Sydney had a gate in excess of 25,000. Hardly any of those were Souths supporters. Are you trying to tell me that Rugby cannot capture the interest of at least a few of those supporters ?

Origin will be played at the MCG in late June. That crowd will be approaching 100k with probably 50% plus Melburnians. Melbourne sports fans will turn out to watch tiddlywinks if it is high quality and properly promoted.

The opportunity for Rugby in Melbourne is there and largely untapped, the mismanagement of the current leadership does not diminish that. Statements saying that Rugby cannot succeed in Victoria are blatantly naive. Lets not fall into the trap of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

But the Rebels do not have to emulate the Storm or its success. I am merely pointing out that if a league team in Melbourne can be more successful than any league team in Sydney or Canberra for that matter then the statement that there isn’t sufficient interest in Rugby in that same city to sustain the Rebels (but there presumably is in Sydney and Queensland) is clearly false.

That very same argument was used against the Storm for years until its absurdity became blatantly obvious. I will give you the success argument but that simply proves that what the Rebels need is success.

and in a centralised model that takes on the liabilities of those states in a mutually beneficial way, then I have little problem with that. I am not sure RA could ever make that work but I am not against the principle.

I sort agree with that just that it seems a bit wrong to me. We have a defined dedicated fan base in Melbourne that we are about to throw away because RA won’t help whilst giving that money to a venture that has potential fans.

A bird in the hand being traded for two in the bush ?

Spot on

I made a comment about what added value the Rebels bring to Rugby that is unaccounted for in their financial results. I think your comment touches on much that I was thinking in that. The only time you will really get some idea of this wider contribution is when it isn’t there – Lost fans, Lost revenue, lost players, lost TV revenue, smaller gates (everywhere). It is far easier to lose a fan than to gain one.

I would seriously consider playing the Rugby season outside of the League / AFL Peak times. Play around with dates, start the season end of Jan, take a break at the end of Feb (when League / AFL start up), Resume after Origin and end before League / AFL finals series starts.

Whatever we do Advertise, Advertise, Advertise until its firmly lodged in the Australian fans psych. Use incentives to get people in Stadiums. A full stadium of people on discount tickets is far better than an empty stadium. Give the things away if needed.

Rebels need more than trimming but I agree.

Work with others in the industry eg Rebels cross promote with the Storm. Find common areas where we can cooperate instead of fighting each other (RA are you listening ?)

” where there isn’t the interest in rugby to sustain it”

How do you know that ?

Sydneysiders made similar comments about the Storm until recent years when they suddenly realised that they were getting bigger average home gates, TV audiences and memberships than any of the Sydney teams. If League can do it then a Rugby Club with the RIGHT Leadership can also do it.

Also, if you took your argument to its logical conclusion, you wouldn’t have Rugby in Australia at all.

Just on that, My wife’s grandmother used to take in an elite Rugby League club’s kit and wash it every week just so her kids could get in to watch for free. Amateur hour stuff yes but if that is what the Rebels need right now !

I agree with you especially if you are spending those dollars in the wrong places, on developing new things (Womens game, wheelchair rugby, WC over expeditures et al) whilst letting existing branches wither and die. Don’t get me wrong, those new things are well worth investing in when we are in a position to invest in them not just when it is currently fashionable.

If RA were smart, they would be working with the Rebels Auditor to make the Rebels financially viable in their own right. Invest if need be or find other ways of securing the dollars needed. Whilst I don’t like the idea of the Rebels shifting out west, it does reduce their cost base. Put a rugby passionate board in there that is happy to work for a reasonable wage and staff with plenty of volunteers (they do exist and many will work for the love of it). Put a proper governance structure in place to control the money.

On that last point, How many roarers would work for the Rebels/Force/your favourite team on minimum wage rates ? I meet many a Rugby tragic shaking a tin for the fire brigade / ambulance / other good cause on a friday / saturday night who I am sure would jump at the chance to be associated with Rugby at the elite level. There is always a way!

The rebels auditors would have had a role here in determining if “trading while insolvent” is a real issue. If there were no red flags coming from them and no factual evidence suggesting the rebels directors knew that the Rebels were insolvent then it will be a very difficult thing to hold the directors accountable especially as they can legitimately claim a belief that monies were owed to them by RA.
Not a slam dunk by any stretch.

They will certainly destroy something.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

What is not generally taken into account when discussing Rebels finances is just how much value did the Rebels generate for RA and the rest of Rugby in Australia ?

That is a very difficult question to answer but if we just let the Rebels die, then I guess we will quickly find out. It is an interesting comparison with the NRL adding a new team last year and then seeing their revenues jump.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

If there isn’t a team in Victoria then you lose your 2nd most populous state to AFL/NRL and if you do that then I would place a very big bet against Rugby securing an increase in tv revenue from CH9

We then lose any future Wallabies from the state (and yes there have been a few) or have to bribe them with big dollars to come across from another sport.

The old addage “No one ever shrank to greatness” is very true in this regard.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival

I wouldn’t go that far but I would agree that they could have done a heck of a lot better.

” RA have been considering dropping a Super rugby team from Melbourne altogether, but as they did with the Force”

I said similar months ago. My reading of the runes suggest to me that RA has been trying to drive the Rebels down this path long before their problems were ever known.

‘to keep the other franchises viable/competitive against the NZ teams.’

It actually makes the situation worse as players inevitably go off and play somewhere else or do something else and not necessarily Rugby related. If they are not involved in top level Rugby games then skills inevitably decline along with desire and commitment. In some ways, NRL poaching in that scenario is probably the best of possible outcomes.

Someone wins at Eden Park 99% plus of the time therefore Eden Park is NOT hard to win at by definition.

No but every time someone criticises the board does not mean that they are hypocrites nor mudslingers either.
The other thing here is that the so called mudslingers aren’t just a small group of malcontents or people with hidden agendas but large swathes of fans (otherwise known as customers) who only have the sport’s best interests at heart.
