Round 15 Team Lists Late Mail: Walker out, Bennett unhappy with Manly's Turbo boost, Brown stood down

By The Roar / Editor

NSW hopeful Cody Walker has suffered a quad injury but he, Latrell Mitchell and Cam Murray are still “every chance” of being fit for the second State of Origin match, according to South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou.

Veteran five-eighth Walker tweaked his quad warming up for training on Friday morning and took no further part in the session. Dean Hawkins will replace him in the halves against St George Illawarra this Saturday for what would have been Walker’s last chance to assert his Origin credentials before the Blues team is named on Tuesday morning.

Walker has been considered a serious chance to reunite with former Souths teammate Adam Reynolds in the halves for NSW, who have lost halfback Nathan Cleary to injury and must defeat Queensland on June 21 to keep the series alive. Demetriou said Walker’s injury was not serious enough to rule him out of Origin contention at this stage.

“(Walker) is every chance of being available,” Demetriou said. “It’s an injury that’s really short-term. It’s only happened a couple of days before the game so we’re not in a position to risk him but Origin’s not for nearly two weeks. For us, we know he’ll be back for the game after the bye (in round 16), which is only a few days after Origin.”

Rabbitohs forward Jai Arrow will miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery on Monday after suffering a syndesmosis injury from a hip-drop tackle in Saturday’s win over the Titans. It means his State of Origin series is over after he was solid for the Maroons off the bench in their victory last week in Adelaide.

Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett says he’s “confused” by the NRL’s commitment to tackling concussion as his side prepares to face a Manly side with star fullback Tom Trbojevic passed fit to play.

Trbojevic was diagnosed with a category one concussion by the bunker doctor in State of Origin I after being whacked high by Maroons prop Tom Flegler in the dying stages.

That diagnosis meant, under the NRL’s 11-day stand-down rules, Trbojevic should be ruled out of Friday’s game against the Dolphins. But Manly successfully overturned the decision, arguing with the support of the Blues and an independent doctor Trbojevic had not showed any signs of concussion.

Bennett was puzzled, the supercoach implying the NRL had caused uncertainty by allowing Trbojevic to play.

“I don’t know what to make of it, there’s such a position we have on head injuries and I’m a bit confused by it,” Bennett said. “I don’t know all the background but it looked like he had taken a pretty heavy knock, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that part of it. After that I don’t know, all I know is the rules are there to protect the players.

“(The waters) are muddied, don’t worry about that. That’s the problem, they make the rules, and the same people who make the rules – the NRL itself – then put doubt in your mind about how serious they are about what they’re doing.”

The Dolphins have been dealt a triple blow with Maroons forward Tom Gilbert (dislocated shoulder) ruled out for the rest of the season while former State of Origin players Anthony Milford and Jarrod Wallace have been banned three games after being charged following the 30-8 loss to the Warriors.

Joseph Suaalii has accepted a three-game suspension after he raised his knees while running into a tackle in the Roosters’ win over Canterbury. Suaalii was not cited at the time, despite his right knee making contact with the head of Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney on Sunday.

Roosters hooker Jake Turpin was hit with a grade one careless high tackle charge but has copped a fine of $1000.

Mahoney went off for a head injury assessment and did not return after the Suaalii incident, but will be allowed to play in Monday’s meeting with his former club Parramatta if cleared by an independent doctor.

The NRL has decided to stand Dylan Brown down after police charged the Parramatta star with sexually touching a woman without her consent at a pub in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The Eels five-eighth was arrested at the Golden Sheaf in Double Bay after police were called to the venue about 11.40pm on Saturday. NSW Police said officers arrested a 22-year-old man, who was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with five counts of sexually touching another person without consent.

Blues star Nathan Cleary’s absence with a torn hamstring means Jack Cogger will start at halfback in Round 15 against the Roosters after an encouraging club debut in Sunday’s win over the Dragons.

North Queensland Cowboys prop Coen Hess has escaped with a fine following his high tackle on Melbourne winger Xavier Coates.

Souths journeyman Richie Kennar ($1000 for a shoulder charge), Sharks trio Ronaldo Mulitalo ($1000 for a crusher tackle), Blayke Brailey ($750 for a dangerous contact for a hip-drop tackle) and Braden Hamlin-Uele ($3000 for a crusher tackle) have been charged but will avoid bans by paying a fine.

Earlier in the round, Zac Woolford and Isaiah Papali’i were charged over incidents in Canberra’s dramatic win over Wests Tigers at Campbelltown.

Woolford immediately said he would pay his fine, saying it’s the best $2500 he’s ever spent because it means he will avoid a two-week ban and be able to play in teammate Jarrod Croker‘s 300th game celebration on Friday against the Warriors at GIO Stadium.

Papali’i was charged with dangerous contact for his late chargedown on Jamal Fogarty as he tried to kick a match-winning field goal. He was fined $1800 for the incident which ultimately led to the Raiders booting a penalty goal to seal a 20-19 triumph.

Raising the elbow to protect themselves is just the excuse. Causing damage to an opponent, is the outcome of such an action.

I think suggesting a player is coached to elbow someone in the throat is fanciful. I think most players carrying the ball would raise their arm to protect themselves or push a player away. If Robinson hadn’t raised her arm Kelly probably hits her in the head. The coached play that I see as very dangerous in today’s game is defenders taking the legs of the ball carrier by lifting them off the ground whilst their team mates twist them and drive them backwards. The best coached team at this has been the Panthers. They do it incredibly well isolating players and driving them back early in the tackle count. API Korisou is a gun at grabbing and lifting the legs of opponents in tackles so they can be twisted and driven backwards. Even with a broken jaw his intention was to pull the legs of his opponent out from under him? This tactic is both illegal and very dangerous.

Last week, the Dragons got within 9 points of the Panthers and conceded fewer points (26) in their loss to the defending premiers than Souths did in their win over the Titans (28). In their last 3 games Souths have conceded 97 points averaging 32.33 points conceded per game! That is truly alarming. Souths have scored 88 points in their last 3 games, for an average of 29.3 points a game. But in each of those games they had Cody Walker playing, while Cameron Murray and Jai Arrow played in 2 of their last 3 games and Latrell Mitchell in just 1 game. This week Souths will be missing Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Cameron Murray, Jai Arrow and Tom Burgess. If you put those 5 players into any of the bottom 4 sides, they instantly become certain top 8 and possible top 4 sides. Souths spine in round 15: 9. Damien Cook, 7. Lachlan Ilias, 6. Dean Hawkins, 1, Blake Taaffe * That combination isn't giving any NRL side or any NRL coach nightmares. Quite the contrary. They will be lying awake at night thinking of all the ways that they can exploit this weakness. Souths MUST win this game despite the disruptions to their squad. If they really have top 4 aspirations, they can't afford to drop 2 competition points to the team coming last on the NRL ladder. If the Dragons can't win this game, the NRL should enact "the mercy rule" for the sake of the Dragons' long-suffering fans and relegate the Dragons to the NSW Cup so that they are a genuine chance of winning each week. * For this game I would be playing Ilias at 5/8 and Hawkins at HB and I would have Ilias play on both sides of the field like Cody Walker. I'm more nervous about this game than for any of Souths last 5 games. If there is any complacency in the team at all, they will be struggling to stay in touch all night.

Coaches go out of their way to make things that their players put into practice on the field look unintentional. Not saying that that’s the case here. Yet knocking the ball out of an opponent’s grasp intentionally, while making it look unintentional is an art form, that all coaches work on. That’s an example. Chicken wing tackle, Cannon ball tackle , Wrestling coaches to hold an opponent in certain ways to stop them getting up quickly. Just some examples of what teams will do to gain an advantage. So if you think that coaches wouldn’t deliberately get players to raise their elbows whilst running with the ball to hit & to knock out some opponents who try to tackle them . Then you’re kidding yourself. Making it look like it’s ‘not so deliberate’ , is just in the coaching. Especially if it’s not a send off offence!

Without being to disrespectful to the girls I don’t think they have really good techniques. To say she had any intention to collect Kelly in the throat would be harsh in my opinion. I cringe a lot at some of the awkward contact in the women’s game. Considering the injury however you can’t argue a suspension is fair enough.

Pretty easy to be terribly concerned with the opponent, once you’ve already committed the foul play & knocked them out of the game.

Having said that, raised elbows have been common places and plenty of players have been on the receiving end with injuries. Griffin Neame suffered the same throat injury but nothing from the officials. Nanai copped a shocker from JWH and it was straight up deliberate. Sutton just told him to keep the elbow down. Young Robson to her credit was extremely concerned for her opponent. If you watch the height at which the defender was coming in you could argue she would have hit Robson in the head with her shoulder. There was a protective reaction element to the contact.

What Bolton ultimately pleaded to, and what he was initially charged with, were different things. Anyway, Brown is stood down. His case won't be heard at the next court date, unless something dramatically changes. He's told the court he intends to at least partially challenge the charges, next mention could be to set down a trial, or to update the court as the progress of any negotiations. He might get lucky, but it's unlikely to be over soon.

It was reported Bolton touched her on the thigh and wasn’t regarded as indecent assault? I don’t get into the detail because I wouldn’t have a clue but it sounds very much like the stupid inappropriate rubbish intoxicated boofheads are inclined to do. Brown’s was repeated and indecent by reports. He deserves to get stood down IMO because obviously it was disrespectful misogynistic behaviour. He can count his luck that he will have his case heard before the end of the month when Luciano Leilua took 9 months to have his charge withdrawn?

" I think there should be fair degree of scope for a doctors assessment made via a monitor to be ‘over ruled’ by doctors performing face to face examinations and testing etc" Yeah, I can see the sense in that. I just had no clue that this avenue existed. It's always been described as the mandatory stand down protocol. Never heard anyone say that was subject to any further testing the player/club may wish to undertake. Then, bam, two in one week.

Aren’t the NRLs independent doctors actually in the bunker and making their decisions based on the impact and subsequent symptoms displayed? If it’s Cat 1, they’re out for the game. If it’s Cat 2, the club doctor makes an assessment on whether they can go back on Pretty sure that’s what happened with Mahoney on Sunday That’s how it was when the independent doctor was brought in… Not sure if that’s changed, but if it is the same I think there should be fair degree of scope for a doctors assessment made via a monitor to be ‘over ruled’ by doctors performing face to face examinations and testing etc…

I didn’t say anything at all about beyond doubt I don’t really want to argue with you about it - we’ve done that You offered that you’d based your opinion of Walker on his mother in laws endorsement I offered that my opinion was based on listening to the terrified 000 call, reading the police and paramedics testimony and eye witness reports I’m not saying your view is wrong or my view is better. They’re both just opinions and you’re every bit as much of an armchair expert as I am Maybe you need to educate yourself on how people sometimes change their testimony because continuing with charges results in them - and their baby - being homeless and without financial support Not saying that happened here - I can’t claim any knowledge of it. Just as you can’t claim any knowledge of the veracity of the eyewitness statements
