Can Postecoglou make an impact on the Premier League?

By Michael Djordjieski / Roar Pro

In some respects, it still doesn’t feel entirely real.

The fact that we Australians finally have our first-ever Aussie manager in Premier League history still makes you pinch yourself.

We didn’t know when this historic day would come, but now that it has, we won’t take it for granted.

Ange Postecoglou’s journey to the biggest league in world football certainly wasn’t traditional.

Having clawed through the managerial ranks and travelled across the globe managing clubs through Australia, Greece, Japan, Scotland and now England – it’s an inspiring path to say the least.

This ultimately highlights that Australia can produce quality managers that can go far and beyond the dugout in Australia.

There will be lots of people around the country that will tune in at early hours of the morning to witness the former Socceroos manager in action.

The prospect of Postecoglou going toe-to-toe with one of the best managers ever in Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola – fresh off accomplishing a historic treble this past season – will be a sight to behold.

His first home game in charge at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will come up against Premier League giants Manchester United.

This sums up only a few of the many exciting challenges that await Postecoglou in England.

One thing you can be sure of? The 57-year-old will be ready for the biggest task of his managerial career so far.

His eye-catching style of football – most prominently on display with his Scottish domestic treble-winning Celtic team – raises genuine curiosity if that success can translate over to Tottenham, who are a club desperate to capture silverware.

He finds himself on a quest to rebuild Spurs’ identity on and off the football pitch, which is something that went missing after the departure of Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino in 2019.

There will be huge pressure placed on the shoulders of Postecoglou to deliver Tottenham’s first major trophy since 2008, but in reality, he will need time to impose his tactical outlook on English football.

Tottenham’s “win now” approach under most notable managers Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte – two elite title-winning coaches – failed as they were unable to claim a single trophy for the London outfit.

Sports opinion delivered daily

You get the sense that in order for Spurs to get the best out of Postecoglou, he needs time to develop a winning Tottenham team, which is something that’s obviously not going to happen overnight.

A successful season for Postecoglou will be a top-four finish in the league, which will ultimately get them back playing Champions League football – two things they weren’t able to accomplish in 2022-23 due to finishing a disappointing eighth in the table.

We can only hope that Tottenham fans get behind Ange the same way every Aussie has and will continue to do.

He has a chance to achieve something great, and although it may not be smooth sailing every step of the way, the Spurs manager needs all the encouragement he can get.

It’s time for Ange to make his mark.

What do you think of Postecoglou at Tottenham? Do you think he can go on and be successful as Spurs boss?

Kane is one of the elite in Europe, hence why Madrid or Munich are after him.

Kane pressed competently enough under Pochettino, but we weren't a pressing team under Jose or Conte. It was the managers tactics rather than Harry Kane's "laziness". As for getting found out in Europe, he broke Rooney's England goalscoring record (in 39 fewer games), and has scored 21 goals in 32 Champions League games. Found out? Really?

Personally, would have preferred Naglesmann but regardless the fans need to give Ange time.

Loved Ange's Brisbane Roar side back in the day. Probably my favourite A-League side ever in terms of the football they played!

Spurs do seem a little chaotic behind closed doors for sure. Evident with the amount of different managers they've brought in over the years.

I'm looking forward to the Postecoglou magic at Spurs. I reckon the will be a few left field recruiting successes. He has an instinct for playing quality and, most importantly, character and fit. However, I hope Ange has full control of Spurs football. I've heard the club is chaotic behind the scenes. That may be why Jose and Antonio failed to deliver.

I am thinking of signing up Optus Sports to watch EPL matches. The cost is $14.99 per month. Are there other cheaper ways?

As a Spurs Supporter I'm not expecting Ange to get top 4 this season rather my expectation for this season is to get some sort of European Football even if its Conference League I would be very happy with that

I think Kane will go , but he is hardly a one trick pony . He combines well with Son coming up field and around the edge of the box , he is a smart player and still a bit underrated by some Probably heading to Real Madrid to win some champions leagues imo

Keeping in mind he has got a difficult job to persuade the spurs fans. He is already fighting an up hill battle with many not impressed by his appointment. Selling Kane against the overwhelming desire to keep him would be hard to come back from. Especially if the results don’t come quickly. Ange has never bowed to fans wills, but I think he will at least give Kane the chance to opt in or out. If he does leave, Spurs would be very wise to ensure it is Kanes desire to leave rather than Ange pushing him out. That way Kane becomes the villain

Kane is ponderous and somewhat lazy. He wont press like Berisha did. Kane has done well in the EPL but he gets found out in internationals and in Europe. I would cash him in while he's still worth something.

I do not think Ange will release Kane. If Kane is compared with Berisha in Brisbane Roar in the early 2010s, Kane is much better. So, if Ange could use Berisha, he can use Kane. Old Brisbane Roar fans remember how he got all the players to play around Berisha.

Spurs could potentially benefit from cashing Kane in now and using that money to buy other players. Hopefully they learned their lesson when they sold Bale in 2013 and didn't spend the money wisely at all.

May the EPL floodgates open to other Australian managers, including: Kevin Muscat, Nick Montgomery & Carl Veart.

Ange needs to get rid of Kane and buy more mobile forwards. There are clubs willing to pay close to 100 million for him. That would be good business. Good luck to Ange

I think the various factors you mentioned that can influence where you finish in the league table is spot on. It's what every manager has to take into consideration over the course of a season. The top-four race is going to be difficult for them to achieve given the quality in the league. I just hope Spurs don't pull the trigger and sack him if he finishes fifth or sixth in the table next season. On the flip side, it could be a great campaign where everything goes right for him. A lot hinges on what happens with Harry Kane. You either reinvest the money from selling him to develop a new team or you keep him and keep trying to make the squad around him better.

I really hope Ange does well in the Premier League. I think they’ve made a couple good signings already in James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario. Important for Ange to get a couple players in at this early stage of the transfer market.

I definitely think he'll need time in order to be successful at Tottenham. Interested to see if he goes after a few of his old Celtic players to bring them across given they know how Ange likes to play. Nevertheless, I hope he does well. Like you said, it's an amazing achievement.

PS, Considering his track record (His previous achievements, including leading South Melbourne, Brisbane Roar, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Celtic FC to multiple championships), it's reasonable to expect that Postecoglou can make an impact on the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur. His experience in managing successful teams, implementing his preferred style of play, and developing young talent could prove beneficial for the club. However, it's important to note that the Premier League is widely regarded as one of the most competitive leagues in the world, with numerous top-quality teams and managers. Postecoglou's ability to adapt to the specific challenges of the Premier League, such as the physicality, the tactical demands, and the intense competition, will be crucial to his success. Additionally, the strength of the squad, the club's financial resources, and the support from the board and fans will also play a significant role in determining how far Tottenham Hotspur can go under his management. While it is difficult to predict the exact outcome of the 2023-2024 season, considering Postecoglou's past achievements and his coaching abilities, there is certainly a possibility for him to make a positive impact and guide Tottenham Hotspur towards a successful campaign. It will depend on various factors, including the team's performance, the development of players, and the overall competitiveness of the league. Ultimately, only time will tell how well Postecoglou adapts to the Premier League and how successful he is at Tottenham Hotspur. That means the success of a team is not a one-man job. All people in Hotspur are attributing.
