Stuart Broad has just given Pat Cummins a lecture on moral standards. The audacity is gobsmacking

By The Roar / Editor

England bowler Stuart Broad claims Australia captain Pat Cummins will come to regret his handling of the controversial stumping of England’s Jonny Bairstow at Lord’s.

Alex Carey’s opportunistic stumping of his fellow wicketkeeper during the dramatic conclusion to the second Ashes Test sparked fury from fans and members at the ‘home of cricket’ and the row shows no signs of abating.

Broad replaced Bairstow in the middle following the incident, with Australia going on to win and take a 2-0 lead.

The England tail-ender insisted “zero advantage” came from Bairstow straying from his crease and said Cummins will eventually think upholding the appeal was the wrong play.

“What amazed me, and what I told the Australians I could not believe as we left the field at lunch, was that not one senior player among them – and I very much understand in the emotion of the game that the bowler and wicketkeeper would have thought ‘that’s out’ – questioned what they had done,” Broad wrote in the Daily Mail.

“Especially given what their team has been through over recent years, with all their cultural change.

“Not one of them said ‘Hang on, lads. I’m not really sure about this’.

“Ultimately, Pat Cummins is a really great guy and I would be amazed, once the emotion settles, if he does not sit back and think ‘I got that one wrong’.”

Ex-players, pundits and even British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak weighed in on the debate, while anger in the crowd at the manner of Bairstow’s exit spilled over into the usually restrained Long Room at Lord’s, where Australian players Usman Khawaja and David Warner were involved in heated exchanges.

Broad, too, admitted the moment got the better of him as he joined captain Ben Stokes, watching from the other end as the skipper hit a remarkable 155 in a forlorn effort to level the series.

“The red mist came over me, too … I just said to Pat on repeat ‘All these boos are for you, for your decision’,” he wrote.

“To Alex Carey, I said: ‘This is what you’ll be remembered for, and that’s such a shame.’

“To repeat, it was not the act that annoyed me, it was the fact they upheld the appeal.

“At the end of that first session, the change from the roar the Long Room gave to Ben Stokes to the boos they reserved for the Australians walking in was stark.

“They knew way before that point how controversial a decision they had made. I am not saying that the MCC members shouting at players was right but having toured Australia four times, I certainly do not think hostile behaviour towards away teams is unusual.”

He admitted England tried the same tactic but claimed the circumstances were different.

“I have seen a clip from earlier in the match when in his guise as wicketkeeper, Jonny himself threw the ball at the stumps. But that was because Marnus Labuschagne was batting outside of his crease — in doing so, attempting to take the lbw out of the game. In other words, seeking an advantage.”

Broad is renowned for using gamesmanship to his advantage and former Australian fast bowler Damien Fleming in his column for The Roar pointed out that his record is hardly squeaky clean when it comes to chivalry on the field.

“Broad was adding to the theatre by putting his bat well behind the crease at the end of every over to get the crowd riled up. I would have loved it if Carey had been able to run him out too when he was trying to do that,” he wrote.

“I found it rich that this guy was ripping into Carey about that incident affecting his legacy and this is the same Stuart Broad who nicked one to first slip and didn’t walk. Once again, it’s contradictory behaviour.”

Being lectured on morals by Stuart Broad is comedy gold. I am now officially done wtih this topic, except for a recap with my mum on our weekly catch up call on the weekend.

Gaining an advantage? Rubbish, Labuschagne is just preserving his wicket aka.trying to survive. It’s not apples for apples and only English sore losers could possible see it any other way. I’ve no issue with Starcs catch, he should have turned his wrist around and despite catching it cleanly I knew it wasn’t going to be upheld, cause THAT’S THE RULES!

It seems there are a lot of references to the Spirit of Cricket and it seems a lot of people don’t really know what that is. Therefore in breaking news the MCC have re-released the preamble to the laws in relation to the Spirit of Cricket. The actual (and new) MCC definition of the Spirit of Cricket (with additions in brackets) is as follows; "Respect is central to the Spirit of Cricket (except when MCC members or Stuart Broad don't feel like showing respect). Play hard and play fair (but do not play hard and fair when England is batting). Accept the umpire's decision (except if you are an MCC member and/or if you are Stuart Broad, in which case you may behave like an entitled, petulant deuche-bag). Create a positive atmosphere by your own conduct, and encourage others to do likewise (see previous information above regarding MCC members and/or Stuart Broad) Show self-discipline, even when things go against you (ummm geez did we actually write that because no Englishman has ever been able to pull that off). Congratulate the opposition on their successes, and enjoy those of your own team (If you are England never really congratulate the opposition on their successes, or if you do make that a hollow congratulation and remind them that doing well against England, within the laws, is always questionable by mentioning the Spirit of Cricket, even if obviously you yourself do not really understand what the Spirit of Cricket is.) Thank the officials and your opposition at the end of the match, whatever the result (except for when Jonny Bairstow doesn't want to, he only has to shake hands and look like he is about to cry). Cricket is an exciting game that encourages leadership (or petulance, see Stuart Broad), friendship (or MCC members calling Aussies ‘cheats’ when they haven't cheated but have followed the MCCs own laws), and teamwork (but not if an Australian wicket-keeper notices an English batter stepping out of his crease, because he should immediately ignore that and remember that even though that player may have stumped others in similar celebrated fashion, to do so against an English batter will become an international incident) which brings together people from different nationalities, cultures and religions, especially when played within the Spirit of Cricket (so long as that spirit is always to make sure England win).” There we have it. Now that it is cleared up England will now go into the third Ashes test ‘feeling’ that they won both games so far and only have to ‘feel’ like they have won the third, to win the ‘Spirit of Cricket Ashes’. Of course this is way more important than the actual Ashes. The actual Ashes will of course go to Australia, as it almost always does, but nevermind that. Let us all remember that it is the job of the Australian captain to make sure England players’ own carelessness, irresponsibility, naivety, arrogance, ignorance and stupidity is never exploited. We owe it to them and those poor, hard-working MCC members to ensure Enghland have every chance to win.

As I said earlier, the umpires, the whole Australian team, Stokes, McCullum, the ICC, the MCC all agree the stumping was legal and the ball was not dead. So you are pretty much on your own if you think the ball was dead (maybe Johnny B's on your side).

What a load of rubbish,. You are completely wrong on many points. Carey threw the ball as soon as he caught it. Had he thrown it to another fielder, the ball would have been immediately dead. The umpires did not "botch" it. They got the decision right and almost everyone (including Stokes and McCullum) have acknowledged this. Or are you suggesting the umpires somehow apply a filter - perhaps if a bowler spins the ball too far, the batsman should not be out? Or maybe if the ball slips from a bowler's hand and becomes a half tracker and is dispatched over the fence, then a dead ball should be called because it wasn't intentional by the bowler? God forbid a ball deflecting off a batsman's bat whilst he is running a quick single and goes across the boundary. Should this be four runs or a dead ball as that's not in the spirit of the game?

Interesting article. But not ‘British exceptionalism’ it is English exceptionalism. The Scot’s are happy to see the English beaten by anyone and they certainly weren’t interest in Brexit.

The fact that it was the last ball of that over completely changes the picture and for me it has turned my opinion turtle. If Jonny left his crease looking forward to the next over then Australia must have called him back. For me it's simple if he was leaving his crease as part of his fidgety habit, and Carey picked up on that and executed it perfectly, i have no problems. For me more than fair. But if Bairstow was leaving his crease just because it was the completion of that over, Australia should have called him back. It's like keep holding the ball while waiting for batter to leave his crease or like a striker hiding behind the opposition goal in football. For me unfair!

You really should watch the videos again. He is just ambling about. He does it a lot. Now he won’t do it anymore. With Starc it was a brilliant catch and could have been our but he touched the ground with the ball when he was sliding having taken it cleanly. Not out. Theme the rules Unfortunate and no complaints. Most people out here thought it was out Anyway, I thought stokes played a total blinder. As Smith said the man is a freak. I hope we get served up a better wicket so bodyline is unnecessary and we can see two great teams playing proper cricket.

It’s such a pity this test will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Stokes was amazing. The Aussies noodled their way out of a tricky situation and the whole thing was derailed by boorish behaviour on the part of the Members. The crowd don’t know better but these guys set themselves up as the custodians of the game for goodness sake. Seems the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket were pretty spot on. The fact is Bairstow was out. Likewise a brilliant catch was disallowed- rightly because of the rules. So here is the thing. From backyard cricket to the test arena the umpires decide. End of chaps. Can we please get on with the game now.

Fun? Yes. But this is a case of the English getting upset at an alleged breach of the SoC yet allowing a real breach. The ongoing chorus of English cacophony of petulant, puerile prats, continuing in their unabatement, constitutes a real breach of not only the SoC but actual rules.
