NRL Finals week 1 preview talking points: Capacity controversy, everyone’s the underdog … It’s finals time!

By AJ Mithen / Expert

Finals, baby! Home to the deserved and undeserved alike. Where miracles happen, contenders unleash and pretenders get moved out of the way fast. Here come your midweek talking points for our first round of NRL Finals.

It’s truly the best time of the year

Players were rested, gameplays were simplified, energy was conserved and it’s all set to bust out now this weekend. We’re in the new season, the real season, where the intensity ratchets up, the pressure is intensified and you can quickly tell who’s up to it and who isn’t.

Finals footy is a different beast to regular season. Games are refereed harder – you won’t get set restart after set restart and penalties will be few and far between so it’s critical to make the most of your time on the ball.

Only the most resilient defences will succeed. If your structure can’t hold under pressure or if you switch off for a couple of plays, you’ll be gone.

Don’t play at construction sites

Everyone’s had their say about Cronulla hosting the Roosters at their home ground which for some reason remains unfinished, a year after they played a (losing) final there last season.

I’ll keep it short – This is the finals. The ever elusive ‘casual fan’ watches these games on TV and might even go to attend one. It’s the time for high rolling types to be all over the corporate hospitality.

If the game’s serious about presenting itself in the most favourable light, it just cannot play a top four final at Cronulla in its current state.

I’d say the same for Penrith’s stadium too, but they’ve got a slightly more reasonable geographic argument.

The weekend ahead

Only four games and we’re going to approach them with an ‘energy rating’.

My ‘predictable energy’ game is 5v8, Newcastle hosting Canberra, who five weeks ago were in the top four then tumbled badly. To be frank, Canberra’s only here because South Sydney, North Queensland and Parramatta all fell on their own faces when it seemed harder to miss the finals than to make it.

Can the Raiders win? It could happen, but it’s as likely as me kayaking around the globe. Newcastle are in scorching form with nine wins on the trot, a fit squad and a screaming home ground which will be rockin’ come Sunday afternoon.

The ‘interesting energy’ game is 1v4, Penrith hosting New Zealand on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers stated to gear themselves up for real football over the last fortnight while New Zealand have been doing all they need to do and not much more. Will Andrew Webster’s team be able to go toe to toe for 80 minutes with finals mode Penrith?

There’s a bit of a hoodoo to get past for New Zealand, who’ve only beaten Penrith twice in 13 games since 2016 (their most recent being in 2019). Of their 11 losses only three were by a single digit. So it hasn’t been close. This is a different Warriors team, but this is the same Penrith.

The weekend’s ‘combined energy’ matchup is 6v7, Cronulla hosting the Roosters on Saturday night at their construction site. The Roosters are on a five game win streak, Cronulla patchy as ever. The Sharks feast on lower clubs, they are feasted upon by more talented clubs.

Are the Roosters a talented club? They’ve definitely pulled themselves together after they looked done and cooked for season 2023 as recently as a month ago. This game will be week one’s most interesting.

The ‘marquee energy’ game is 2v3 on Friday. Melbourne head to their home away from home to play Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.

A child born in Brisbane on March 20, 2009 has gone through primary school and today would be sitting in a year nine class. They’re old enough to be allowed to work at McDonalds (with their parent’s permission) and in their entire lifetime they’ve never seen the Brisbane Broncos beat the Melbourne Storm at their home ground.

The Storm are on a month-long win streak, Brisbane are at full tilt after resting key players in another home loss to Melbourne to round out the regular season. This game is the pick of the bunch and it’ll go a long way to setting the board for the rest of the finals series, with the loser having to (more than likely) go through Penrith to make the Grand Final.

True . Yet I’d take it as stadiums built , for individual clubs that are in the same state.

Remembering current player's names has become a long paddle. Know their positions and abilities. Otherwise OK. Don't get old, AJ.

Queensland, the State, is completely different in terms of scale to Sydney, the City. Suncorp Stadium (Brisbane) to QCB (Townsville) is almost 1400km. Suncorp to QBus (Gold Coast) is 80km. Bluebet (Penrith) to Accor (Olympic Park, Sydney) is 40km. CommBank (Parramatta) to Accor is only 12km. It would take a brave Government to spend more money on stadia in the western corridor. I don't disagree with what you're saying, I just don't think comparing Sydney with Queensland is a great argument.

Queensland government seems better at at least getting some quality venues built. You may all be nicely surprised, with further upgrades for the Dolphins stadium , at some point?

There's definitely reason for optimism if you're a Broncs fan. The Storm have been unusually leaky in defence conceding upwards of 19 ppg - they haven't had a worse defensive showing since 2014 - coming up against the best attacking side in the league. The Storm might've had 2 wins against Brisbane this season but neither was against a full-strength Broncos side - this game will be the real deal. I have a feeling last week was the loss we had to have to ground a few of the boys after 7 wins on the trot. Kevvie will no doubt be getting them up for Friday

Kayo Stadium is not too shabby. only 5 years old the last section. It's not a huge stadium but it's pretty decent for a suburban ground....

I'm guessing the NRL would not have been happy about the state of Shark Park 12 months ago, so presumably they've had conversations with the Shark management about what they planned to do and when improvements could be expected. Assuming that happened, the NRL must be fine with the current state of the ground. The question is, how long can this situation remain as is? You're right, it will take as long as it takes but how long will the NRL remain patient? This point is moot if the Sharks don't make the finals in the next few years but it'll raise its head again next September if they do

Really nervous about the mighty Broncos chance of overcoming the Storm hoodoo. Since their win against Storm in 2015, Broncos are 1-16. As mentioned in the article, Broncos haven't beat Storm at Suncorp since 2009. But, it gets worse. The hoodoo extends to the heroic halfback. Reynolds has a woeful record against the Storm with only 2 wins and 15 losses. This year feels different though. I'm getting 2015 vibes. Let's go Broncos!

BG – just a thought. Shark Park is owned by the Cronulla club. They have to find the money to fund all the upgrades. That’s why it’s so slow. (If you remember, the Sharks had to play at Kogarah in 2020 and 2021.) The NRL will not throw money into a privately owned ground, and the State government has already invested big-time in CommBank. Accor and Allianz. They won’t throw any money at Leichardt Oval (which gets loads of use) so the Sharks have to fund it all, and it will take as long as it takes.

Evidently no club out west deserves a quality home stadium, except for Parramatta. Two new home stadiums for Parramatta & in that time none for any other club from the west. There’s the argument that clubs can play at the stadiums that have been built such as Homebush . Yet it’s been tried time & time again & doesn’t work. West’s don’t know where their home is ? Bulldogs only slightly better than that. They are both so much better at Campbelltown ( for West’s ), Bulldogs at Belmore . Penrith are Penrith. Not playing there makes no sense for them either & it especially doesn’t for supporters. Lots of chat about a new stadium at Penrith, then a stadium upgrade. Until now, that remains as just chatter. Same deal as for other clubs further east , that aren’t the Roosters of course . I just want everyone to take a look at Queensland. Titans, good stadium. Cowboys, good stadium, Broncos, good stadium. The only ones without a good stadium are the new boys , Dolphins. Shows what can be done.

Question AJ. The Sharks played a finals game at Pointsbet last year, when the ground was probably in worse shape than it is now. If the NRL had issues with capacity, why didn't they do something about this in the intervening 12 months? That they didn't, seems to indicate the NRL has no issues with the game being played there, probably because they'll get more watching the game on TV, which will keep the broadcasters happy.

I've got a mate who's a boundary umpire in Aussie Rules and the abuse he cops every week is staggering. Even the goal umpires get a spray, so not sure rugby league is the worst by any means.
