Unbeaten South Africa succumbed to the Dutch for a second time in less than 12 months as the Netherlands claimed another monumental upset over the Proteas at a World Cup.
Last November the Netherlands’ shock win in Adelaide dumped South Africa out of the T20 World Cup and on Tuesday they crashed to a 38-run defeat in the 50-over equivalent in Dharamshala.
It is good news for Australia and England – who face the Proteas in Mumbai on Saturday – as both countries have ground to make up after suffering two early defeats in the 10-team group stage.
South Africa squandered plenty of promising positions for a third straight victory, however.
The Dutch were on the ropes at 4 for 50, then 6 for 112 after being asked to bat first in a contest reduced to 43 overs apiece by rain, but captain Scott Edwards rescued them from number seven.
His unbeaten 78 from 69 balls was supplemented by crucial cameos from Roelof van der Merwe (29 from 19) and Aryan Dutt (23 not out off nine) as the Netherlands posted a healthy 8 for 245.
“Proud of the group. Putting in that performance and being able to play my part is nice,” player of the match Edwards said.
“When we came into the tournament we wanted to have a chance at playing semi-finals and if you want to do that you’ve got to beat teams.
“Obviously South Africa are probably one of the favourites the way they are playing, so it is a big win for us.”
In reply, Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock, who made centuries in the wins over Sri Lanka and Australia, started well but the pair, plus Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen, all departed within the space of 21 deliveries.
A position of 0 for 36 became 4 for 44 before Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller put on a run-a-ball 45 to steady the ship. However, Klaasen’s dismissal left all South Africa’s hopes resting on Miller.
He was dropped on 23 in the deep but when Logan van Beek clipped the top of Miller’s off-stump, for 43, all South Africa’s hopes went with him.
Bas de Leede, who had put down the steepler from Miller, atoned by dismissing Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada. Then Van Beek snared Keshav Maharaj in the last over as South Africa were all out for 207.
It was a superb collective bowling effort as Van Beek took three for 60 while Van der Merwe and Paul van Meekeren each bagged two wickets as the Dutch celebrated a first ODI World Cup win since 2007.
Bavuma said South Africa let the Dutch side off the hook.
“At 112-6 we didn’t want to let them get over 200 and we definitely dropped the ball there,” Bavuma said.
“We’ll have to let the emotion seep in. There is no point trying to forget what happened.
“It will hurt and it should hurt. Tomorrow we’ll get back on the journey, our campaign is by no means over.”

Yeah, the Pakistan and England games are key - you can probably get in with 6 wins, which means you can afford 3 losses. Let's say we lose to NZ - which on current form seems likely, we absolutely need to beat Pakistan and England to go through, because not only is it a win for us, it's a loss for them and for England that could almost be fatal. We also need to ensure we don't lose a banana skin game like England and the Saffas both have. With the English still yet to play India or South Africa they could well be dead and buried by the time we play them, which may help.

It was a great come back with the bat, but gee Afghanistan threw it away with some Australian-esque fielding (as one commentator joked). They’re also short a batsman or two

It very much depends. We’ve only lost to two of the strongest teams. As our draw gets easier we will likely win a number of games. The key will be whether we can defeat other mid table teams

They're in serious trouble of winning the whole thing. The risk is if they win enough games they'll be holding it aloft as actual winners. They'll have to become grinners too. It could be too much for them.

Slaughters? I thought all speakers of Anglish slaughtered their own language first let alone anything else.

Afrikaans in particular is a constantly evolving language ..Not just even today but especially today . Its no longer just the Dutch ancestors who speak it but in fact its now the home language to more people of colour than the original Dutch settler ancestors ..In fact the debate about just who is an Afrikaner is a significant one here. There is no Kings English comparison .No set standard . It has huge external influences even cross pollinating with Zulu , Xhosa and Sotho… USA English terms permeate too….In other words it remains extremely dynamic…I like that ..Just makes sense ..

I love how the entirely reluctant English speaking world slaughters said language.

New Zealand in serious trouble here. If they claim another scalp here, then we have one hell of a world cup on our hands here...

South Africa are desperate to win a World Cup and would not throw a game just for money 1. South Africans have cheated in the past. 2. South Africa sure don't have the attitude of a team trying to win it. They borderline almost needed to enter the qualifying tournament because they kept cutting/cancelling ODI's. 3. It was clearly a light hearted quip by Megeng. Coal, not diamonds up there ok.

No - I still don’t think they’ll make it through. We’ve beaten Sri Lanka only. I still don’t see us beating NZ or England.

Choked? Good clickbait. But funny logic when half the Dutch team were Saffers. Though the hero was an out-and-out Aussie, Scott Edwards, who has a distant Dutchperson in the family tree. Only saw the highlights but none of the Saffers lost their heads, except perhaps Miller when it was too late - a few got out to up and down bounce, a couple to indifferent shots and then they were behind the eight ball. Can happen. Probably a disadvantage batting second. The real failure was to let them get away after being about 7/140.

Germans went to Namibia and did lots of no good there. English went to what's now Zimbabwe. Ditto.

And top the table, albeit briefly. The second best side, Victoria, are stone motherless last.
