First A-League coach axed after just two rounds: City give Vidosic his marching orders after six-goal shellacking

By News / Wire

Melbourne City have ruthlessly sacked coach Rado Vidosic just two games into the A-League Men season, installing Aurelio Vidmar as caretaker in his place.

Vidosic paid the price for losing the first two games of the new campaign, headlined by a disastrous 6-0 hammering at Adelaide United on Sunday.

The 62-year-old guided City to the premiership last season but oversaw a 6-1 thrashing by Central Coast Mariners in the grand final.

City announced in a statement on Wednesday that former Socceroos captain Vidmar would take the reins until the end of the current campaign.

Vidosic was moved from coaching City’s A-League Women side into the ALM hot-seat in November last year when Patrick Kisnorbo left to join French outfit Troyes.

He was appointed on a permanent basis in February.

Former technical director Vidosic – who also won silverware with the club’s ALW side – managed City’s men for 25 league games (12 wins, seven draws, six losses).

“We are immensely grateful to Rado for his contributions to Melbourne City over the past five years,” the club’s CEO Brad Rowse said in a statement.

“From our men’s and women’s teams to our youth academy, Rado’s impact has been significant. We wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”

A massive off-season overhaul in personnel – with Marco Tilio, Aiden O’Neill, Jordy Bos and Tom Glover among high-profile departures – didn’t help City’s start to 2023/24.

The club’s new signings are yet to gel, with City exiting the Australia Cup in the semi-finals as they juggled the start of the ALM season with an Asian Champions League campaign.

But Sunday’s unacceptable heavy loss to Adelaide clearly forced City’s hand.

Vidmar will take charge for City’s Friday meeting with Sydney FC at AAMI Park.

The former Socceroos captain led Adelaide for 73 league games between 2007 and 2010 (25-21-27).

He was Ange Postecoglou’s assistant with the Socceroos in the national side’s Asian Cup triumph in 2015 and has also coached Australia’s youth teams.

Vidmar’s most recent coaching post was with Thai club Bangkok United in 2022.

“In Aurelio we have someone whose credentials speak for themselves and who is also committed to playing an attacking, possession-based brand of football that aligns with our own football philosophy,” football director Michael Petrillo said.

Vidosic’s assistants Petr Kratky and former club captain Scott Jamieson remain in their roles.

Petrillo said that vidmar’s philosophy is more in line with the club direction they want to go. Rado was involved at all levels you would have thought that his values aligned with the clubs????? . Then you have the sudden loss of the change room……… which coincides with Jamison joining the coaching team obviously to do with defensive side of things…….. which is where it is all going wrong. My apologies if you think I care……… Petrillo needs to address the problem of the bloody seagull invasion in the second half of games????

I find Reis a ‘walking yellow card’ and someone who is likely to give a pen away. He is heart-in-mouth stuff for me. I agree about Arslan, I’ve liked the look of him from day one. On the pitch he is someone who is skilful and knows and reads the game very well. A good pickup. The problem we have at the moment is that the team hasn’t gelled. There’s probably enough talent to be a threat to any side but we seemed to have been aimless with the ball. A lot of possession but no scoreboard pressure. Oh, and we have to find another avenue to goal rather than relying on JMac, which isn’t quite working at the moment.

Yes that's what I've heard as well, that Rado came to Petrillo and said he had lost the dressing room. If so credit to Rado for doing that, a lot of coaches would have just waited to be told to go. Anyway, interesting to see how Aurelio will go, been a while in the A-Leagues but he did take AU to a final of the ACF so that's pretty impressive and he's gone okay in Thailand recently. I think we've recruited our Visas poorly compared to previous few years, especially both CBs Reis and Souprayen who are well into their 30s and are slow and ponderous, Arslan likewise the same age but after playing Serie A last year is a solid pick up compared to the other two. Jakolis is in his 20s and playing ok, whilst Sakhi seems a little to slight for Australian football. Would like to see if Aurelio can start playing a few of the younger players, especially Galloway, Hall, Politidis, and Shillington in the backline. Still with Leckie to come back and the team still to gel better, no reason to not like his chances in getting the team out of the rut they are in in the A-Leagues.

viddys an interesting appoinment given all the history between adelaide united and melbourne city - whilst its a caretaker role, if he does well; i would not be surprised for it to turn permanent alot of people are also forgetting how tight petrillo and viddy were in adelaide and they have remained good friends since petrillo moved to melbourne - so he will have the full support and backing of the a leagues best footbal director viddy was ostrasized by a large portion of the professional football community in SA (much like kosmina was for a while) before gradually coming back into the fold. In terms of insight of him as a man and coaching, he is very introverted and details orientated when it comes to coaching. i've always gotten on better with tony (who is a lot more passionate and emotional) than aurelio, who i find to be more calculated when he talks.

Poor Rado, if only for the rest of the league who were quite liking the downfall of City. Now they're likely to come back up where they belong which is generally the top of the pile

It will be interesting, if not amusing to see whether MC can lift from their early season plod - well that’s the polite version. Was Vidosic responsible for the player turnover this year? MC have been pretty stable since the acquisition and I always get the impression they are builders - adding on here and there as needed whereas looking at them this season they look like a Victorian navy vessel, with personnel press ganged into serving on board and I confess I look at some of the playing staff and feel that there is no way they would have been signed a couple of seasons ago. What is the mother ship up to? Are clubs such as New York and Melbourne City just tax losses with the slight chance that someone will drop through the sieve and turn out to be a Haarland but for very little cost?

The talk is that Rado spoke to Petrillo and both agreed that Rado would step down from the coaching job.

I can’t say I am a fan of city. I tend to favour the more ‘fibro’ side of town living on the central coast. My only claim to fame is that I have watched every game of the a-league since it’s inception despite the woeful ‘pubtalk’ commentators. Even Kisnorbo had trouble keeping the side going for the full ninety minutes towards the end of his tenure and I would describe what he left Vidosic was a poisoned challis. It was evident that the cart was before the horse with city, Vidosic was not holding the reins……… the players were. As for Kisnorbo, his results in France are reflecting his true coaching standard. The teams city put on the field during his tenure were capable of playing international football teams around 70 down to 140 status.

City's decline was almost immediate from when Vidosic took over. Kisnorbo had club cooking when he was at the helm; they were chewing up teams quite easily.

OK well it is was inevitable, but must confess to being surprised by the speed of this. I assumed he would have leeway of 6 games or so. Tho there was definitely the feeling on the weekend that he had lost the players, which would explain the haste.

Well, well, well. There are plenty of us, in particular, Brisbane Roar fans, who saw this coming and have stated as such in the last week or so. This is not surprising. Now, how well will Aurelio Vidmar go? It's been a long time since his days of coaching Adelaide United.
