'Milked the game and contracts dry': 100-cap Wallaby announces shock return to rugby at the age of 41

By News / Wire

Former Australia flyhalf Matt Giteau will return to professional rugby at the age of 41 after signing with American club San Diego Legion for the 2024 season of Major League Rugby.

Giteau, who played for MLR club LA Giltinis before they folded last year, announced his retirement in February, joking he had “milked the game and contracts dry”.

“We are over the moon to secure Matt’s services for the upcoming season,” San Diego coach Danny Lee said in a statement on Wednesday.

“He is a world-class player who will bring an incredible wealth of knowledge, a competitive attitude, and a drive to succeed with him that will no doubt spread throughout the squad.”

The 103-test Wallaby played at three World Cups and had a key role in Australia’s run to the 2015 final in England.

He also won seven elite competition trophies across the globe in his two-decade career, including titles in Australia, France, Japan and the US in 2021 with the short-lived Giltinis.

the comp is not that bad and to be honest it is a far superior national competition to what we have in Australia. NY needed to be booted before they folded as they did not have a field to play on and i'm not sure what happened to Toronto. There is a team from Mexico coming in and a few other teams across the Us looking to fill the other open spot.

Broken thumbs when your a dentist , with a family a mortgage and angry wife , expected to stay back with your young team drinking. Can’t get out of bed on Monday, must I go on- I’d still play too- except props weight 140kg and get replaced when they’re tired.

More than likely Bluff, he probably drank it. Saw the Pogues in Sydney in the late 80s early 90s and he was so pissed on stage that mid song he just sat down. The rest of the band kept playing as if it was a common thing

I do. When your wife AND kids tell you you sound like a packet of chips getting out of bed each morning, it’s probably time to stop re-injuring the injuries. At least, that’s the reason I stopped, plus I didn’t think it would look good for me with my son refereeing. He knows all my rugby sins.
