Super Rugby Pacific teams round 11: Harrison in for Edmed, Lynagh, White out, Rebels change entire front row

Wow. Mate that’s harsh. First, Tom Wright has been brilliant, week in week out. He’s doing things at 15 that other players just can’t do, and he’s not making mistakes. He and Tua were the best two players on the park against the Hurricanes, and they’ve been the Brumbies’ best all year. For me, the proof is right in front of us; The Brumbies are our top team, they’re playing some great attacking footy, and the two players pulling the strings are Lolesio and Wright, which is in turn allowing Tua to play well. The Brumbies struggled against the Chiefs and Blues, and that was a worry, but they turned that around against the Canes. They also beat the Blues and Hurricanes handily last year. So, for me, it’s Lolesio edging Gordon at 10, and Wright at 15 with daylight second.

Hi Rocky… but did you have a laugh?

The insurmountable problem facing Australian rugby in a doomed rivalry with New Zealand

I hear you. I’d really just like to be able to take it to other teams and put tries on them. For 20 years we’ve struggled to score tries. Also, Wright has been positionally perfect this year, and his defence has been very good. I rate Kellaway, he’s fantastic, but he’s a ball runner alone, not a playmaker, whereas Tom has amazing vision, hands, step, and pace.

Hmm, that’s a bit harsh I reckon Crusher. I rate all 4 locks, although I’d say Hooper is a better 6 or 8. Frost lacks the weight and ‘power running’ of Hooper, but he’s brilliant in the lineout and works hard in defence. He’s a smart player, I the mould of John Eales.

Super Rugby shows that the Bledisloe Cup isn't going anywhere - one selection could give the Wallabies hope

I hear you, and in the past I’ve been frustrated with Noah, mainly because of his lack of assertiveness and direction. In the past it has almost seemed like he doesn’t want the ball. Larkham ALWAYS wanted the ball, and always seemed to be creating something. However, this year, Noah has really improved. He’s more confident, he’s bouncing around behind the ruck calling plays and demanding the ball, changing direction and telling players where to run. He’s improved, mate. Currently, he’s our form 10. I like Carter, but he’s been average this year and now there’s even talk of a switch to league. Unless Tom Wright makes a miraculous switch to 10 (and he could, he’s that good), Noah is the man.

Whether there’s any truth to this or not, it’s something his manager has to put out there to push up his value. Good luck, I say. It’d be a shame to lose him, though, as the most similar 10 to Larkham we’ve had since the great man retired.

Wallabies' young gun mulling NRL switch as Rebels' future continues to cloud picture

My neck would have snapped at the first engagement, my main man and boiler-room stoker 🙂

Hmm. Yes. That’s true. Look, this “rant” as you called it started from one benign and trivial comment about how I loved many things about the 2023 season (EJ and world cup fiasco excluded). I don’t rate Hodge as a player, I stand by my comments that he was waaaay out of his depth at tier 1 test level, and I’m glad it’s all over. That’s all.

Completely agree, Jim Williams was amazing for the Brums, and always performed for the Wallabies as well.

Jesus. You scrum-types really do think. Thanks for the enlightenment, Fats, from a broken 10.

Your open honesty is refreshing though, Fats. Well done ????

Also notable in the difference between the Brumbies vs the Blues and the Brumbies vs the Hurricanes. Against the Blues, for whatever reason, they were on the back foot all game. They struggled to win the collision, and when they had chances they kicked it away. Against the Hurricanes, they were punishing. The Hurricanes couldn’t get a roll on because of it. Now, if only we could do it every week.

Kenny is my favourite player of all time, Sterling not far behind, but Johns had EVERYTHING. Including punishing defence, for a relatively small man.

Hanigan’s a great player….

Mate, that’s ONE game. He screwed up in many others.

He’s been brilliant all year, no lapses. Remember a bloke named Justin Hodges, great QLD centre in league? Remember his State of Origin debut? Brain explosions galore, mistake after mistake leading to NSW points. Well, he matured. He became a QLD and Australian regular (as much as i disliked him…). Wright is too good to waste in a ‘wider squad’. He’s a run-on player every day.

Maybe, but Wright has created so many tries from nothing coming in at first receiver from fullback this year. And last year, for that matter. He’s wasted on the wing.

Wright has been brilliant this year. He’s grown. The things he’s doing are incredible.

He was a 6 in league and a 10 in schoolboys rugby. He’s a natural playmaker who has stepped up time and time again at first receiver for the Brumbies. I’d love to see him at 10. Larkham, the greatest 15 to 10 convert ever, is coaching him, so hopefully the penny drops at some point and he shifts him in there ahead of Debreczeni the next time Noah needs a rest.

Hi Strategist, why do you say “never will be”? Everyone can develop, and this year Noah has come along in leaps and bounds. He’s pulling the strings and playing better than he ever has. His performances have been outstanding when his forwards have actually won the collisions.

Five things: Aussie sides finally discover what it takes to compete against Kiwis, rookie outshines World Cup Wallaby

He does complete tackles, and to his credit he doesn’t avoid the collisions or hide behind the line, but his size does work against him. He’s not the strong, shoulder in, bury the ball-runner kind of defender that Carter Gordon is.

Tizzano is fantastic. His big challenge is going to be getting noticed as a Force player, I think, as he’s up against several well-known 7s in the east (McReight, Gamble, Reimer, Rory Scott etc.). I may be wrong, but it seems like up and coming Force players are a bit out of sight, out of mind when it comes to selections. Unfairly, I mean.

But he has been been steering it. When his forwards have done their job, he’s confidently run that team. He has been taking the ball to the line, running and ball-playing, in every win the Brumbies have managed this year. By any measure, he’s ahead of the other 10s at the moment. Not saying he has more attacking ability than Carter Gordon, whom I think is our future at 10, but at the moment Noah is playing better than ever. He’s in front, I think.

Wright has been consistently good all season. It’s not a ‘highlights reel’ anymore, it’s just his standard game time. He’s been brilliant. Players can mature, and Wright has. We also need someone who actually creates opportunities at test level. We’ve had ‘solid’ backs for years, we’ve been able win possession and territory, but we’ve struggled to score. Well, Wright is a genuine attacking threat. He’s a player that opposing teams will have to think about and attempt to nullify. That’s a good sign.
