'An opportunity that is rarely presented to Australian coaches': Aloisi departs Roar to join Muscat in China

By Mike Meehall Wood / Editor

Brisbane Roar have been shocked on Christmas Eve by the departure of manager Ross Aloisi with strong rumours that he will take up a job in China.

Luciano Trani will take charge for the Roar’s game at Melbourne City on Thursday with the long-standing assistant named as interim coach until the end of the season.

“Leaving Brisbane Roar has been a very tough decision for me,” said Aloisi to AAP.

“I wholeheartedly believe in the club’s progress and direction.

“However, the opportunity presented to me overseas is something that aligns closely with my personal journey and goals as a coach. It’s a path I feel I must take at this stage in my career.”

Aloisi had revitalised the Roar since taking over earlier this year after joining from Kevin Muscat’s coaching staff at Yokohama F Marinos, and the pair look likely to link up again at Shanghai Port, where Muscat has recently taken over.

Despite working under challenging budgetary conditions, he has taken Brisbane to fifth in the A-League ladder.

“While we are sad to see Ross leave, we understand and respect his decision,” said Roar CEO Kaz Patafta.

“This is an opportunity that Ross wanted to take for his personal growth as a coach. We did not want him to leave at this time, but we also did not want to stand in the way of an opportunity that is rarely presented to Australian coaches.

“With Ross’ departure, we are pleased to appoint Luciano Trani as the interim Head Coach for the rest of the season. Luciano’s vast experience in the A Leagues aligns perfectly with our club’s philosophy and goals.

“We are fully committed to supporting Luciano in continuing the positive start to this season.

“Absolutely nothing changes in terms of our goals and aspirations for this season. We are well prepared for these transitions and remain steadfast in our commitment to success.

“The club’s management and dedicated team ensure that we are always ready to adapt and maintain our competitive edge.”

Roar didn't say too much actually, other than telling fans it was obvious they had to part ways. I would think it's obvious that you don't need a Football Manager and a COO, or the overlap in functions would be such that friction could not be avoided. They didn't issue any PR fluff, just a brief comment and they told fans they knew that they would be challenged financially by him. I don't know Trani but it's not new territory to leave the assistant in charge until the season's end. Last season they were criticised for sacking the assistant with Moon, this season they're criticised for keeping the assistant.

It's strange how some coaches are better as a #2 and fail quite spectacularly as #1's. As a coach I could never be an assistant as I want to implement my playing style and my philosophies and not just follow someone else's. Mind you some #2's totally run the practice pitch etc. Some put down witches hats and hand out bibs.

I go back a long way in Queensland football as a player, junior coach, as a club president and a representative at the old QSF. Queensland football has always been fractious since the days of Clem Jones and Brusasco who ruled the QSF for their own vanity. Perry Park is a prime example of poor decision making as clubs were forced to play some of their "Home games" there in order to subsidise Perry Park with the club fore going their own income from catering etc . Then the idiotic Brisbane United fiasco that morphed into the Strikers initially a success but at what financial cost?

I’m confused why Trani has been given the gig until the end of the season - if he’s not the long term coach then we have two transfer windows and a bunch of resignings to sort out under an interim. Not a great plan. The visa striker was pulled for reasons of funding, which was diverted to service debt, not something new management may have been aware of when they took over … but the move damaged multiple relationships (with coach and many fans to list just two). Historically the way this plays out is the CEO is the next to go, finding it hard to bridge reality of Bakrie ownership with the reality of running a football club, let’s see. Ross was always going it was only a matter of when, and yes - Roar have funds for a striker, and it could be that $400k striker because it’s a Bakrie trick to sign players on short term contracts so $400k becomes a Jan-June contract of less than half that (it’s why the Bakries always sign players late in the winter window) but again, let’s see.

2 a league clubs have now signed him as a teenager with a third (adelaide) passing on the chance to due to the sheer number of quality teenage forwards the city produces. there is absolutely a player inside of him, but it requires the right coach and support around him to bring it out

im not so sure that is going to happen Waz based on what im aware first hand with the now ex coach. his exit is almost identical to pappa's exit - with a club promising an injection of funds for new player/s and then not delivering the forward player in question that i am talking about was also offered to adelaide for this upcoming january (but adelaide are desperately trying to get stefan mauk so that other ship has sailed) hes in the range of $300-$400k (not mauk, the player brissy was after)

brissy havent moved along, thats what im saying - theyre still set up as adelaide mark II (and its not a surprise given there early season success) if they move away from that mimicking of adelaide across all aspects of the club, this will spell a disaster for brissy trani is a very interesting appointment, hes similar to rado vidosic - much better as #2 then a #1 dont forget kovacevic is still under an NDA, he'll be able to speak publicly about why brissy removed him - not some PR fluff that was given from the inexperienced management group in charge now. there is a lot more to that story that is yet to come out

MF, your opinion is based on a lot of what I see on social media and could easily be misled by it, but when you fact check, actually look into what FQ is doing you find a completely different story. It's concerning that the dissenters have a large voice and a lot of people are easily misled, not capable of or willing to check facts. The worrying part is that often the dissenting voice is a trusted (by some) football media person who think they're doing the right thing by supporting football in Qld when all they're doing is amplifying the voice of a dissenter, as happened recently to FQ over their rules for NSD P/R. Merry Christmas MF.

Waz & LH Not questioning anything you posted, but generally the word coming out of QLD from Football folk is not as you just posted. You can't blame people like me and say southern bias when in general I am reacting to the tone and general negativity steaming from most posts. Again perhaps its Australia wide .... consider Rugby ... heaps of issues IMO many more than we have, but they seem to be capable of separating the quality, players and teams from management issues... they still often debate management issues, but equally debate the game.

Lionheart The simplest answer to all this is money - he’ll be getting way more in China that any club in Australia could pay him, and he’ll be paying less tax. Roar need to lick their wounds, get over this, and make sure this season isn’t written off completely. As I said earlier, we’ll find out what new management is really about over this next 4 weeks; Zac hinted at signings in a recent message to fans - let’s see what they’ve got (they can start by spending the $100k saved from Ross’ salary :stoked: )

totally agree Waz, more registered players, more trained coaches, more trained refs not just in A Leagues but also at FA ref academy, womens Cuo and P/R, all the ducks are aligned and FQ are doing great, but I spend much of my time defending them against fans, local and interstate who think they are a drag on the game. Just like I defend Roar on here. The football community, in my view, fans and some club execs, are deeply divided. I’m editing now, by emphasising that I’m an outsider and formed some of my opinion on the recent support given to Sunshine Coast Fire, largely on Tweets. I should also add that Rob Cav as a former LNP pollie, seems to mix pretty well with politicians of all parties, exactly what you need in football CEO positions. BTW MF, not fully conversant with rugby situation but my understanding is that NSW RU is the issue, they’re broke and want to sell the farm to make some money while QRU is doing well financially and are not happy with NSWRU’s p[lans. May be wrong, but that’s what I’ve heard.

Ross has had a hard run with the Suncorp surface, Ballymore training surface and injuries. Last post- match press conference he sounded very much like he was about to throw in the towel with the unbecoming answer, I don't know, to several questions about injured players. I would think these issues are standard fare for any coach, play in wet weather on a drenched pitch or an ill-prepared pitch or injured players, certainly in youth teams and lots of leagues around the world. He doesn't seem to have handled them so well, that's translated to two average performances.

that was when we had a SA man running the football department, he publicly nominated his mates from Adelaide even before nominations had been called for. I appreciate your dedication to SA football but at the time, as an outsider, it all looked very insular, very 1960s Queensland, very SA biased if you will, and I'm ever so pleased we've moved right along.

Ahhhhh Mid, “ however QLD Football in general seems from afar totally divided with lots of self interest…. ” You seem to be suffering from ‘late stage southernitus’ not serious but you may feel compelled to comment on things you know little about, either that or you are confusing FQ with FV. Under new leadership (CEO Rob Cavallucci, or Cav, the most likely successor to JJ at FA imo) the State is doing just fine. Participation numbers are very healthy, growing rapidly, and are second only to NSW’s in numbers; Female participation is healthy, and under Cav’s - admittedly strong leadership - the State has introduced a full pyramid system that extends from NPL down to QPL 6 (and technically in to the Metro leagues below that) This is a first for QLD, so much so that FQ introduced a regulation that to enter the NSD you should come from the Queensland pyramid and if you didn’t, and got relegated from NSD, then you’d have to rejoin at QPL6 … much to the dismay of our southern cousins who totally misunderstood the purpose and intent of the regulation which is to protect the pyramid. (If you get relegated from NSD you basically go back to where you came from, eg NPL). Coach Education, QAS, and Futsall are all aligned to FQ, growing, and proving a real bonus for the State. And for the first time we have a growing schools program outside of Private schools which is a real catalyst on participation. The AAFC started in QLD and has moved to Melbourne, the QLD clubs have stayed united but on the periphery of the AAFC, rightly or wrongly, but will enter NSD at some point. But there are challenges with national competitions for states with few clubs but lots of distance to cover. FQ can hopefully help with them out, otherwise QLD clubs don’t survive in the NSD. FQ have reintroduced various State and Metro cup competitions, and extended the playing season, increased the number of games juniors are playing (up from 18 to over 30 games a season) - this has not been popular with some parents, clubs, or competing sports - but it’s good for player development and will drive stronger development in the coming years. Player registration fees have been held flat for a couple of years, but FQ finances remain healthy and strong. Cav’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I’m kinda neutral on him, but FQ are certainly more effective under his leadership and the game is going in the right direction in the State despite what southerners from afar may think.

He is a lost to the A-L in general.... Ben Cahn looks like being his replacement and is a decent coach. Roar seem to be getting there act together, however QLD Football in general seems from afar totally divided with lots of self interest.... maybe its a QLD thing as Union while in all sorts of trouble has issues with the QLD union as well... no idea the issues by the way or the rights and wrongs and who is at fault, just that they have issues. For everybody's sake including Football in general I hope they can get their act together... in many ways it mirrors the broader Australian Football family....

Maybe he could write a book with Dwight Yorke – that would be an interesting read as well. They could have it out by next Christmas. Having written that, there are usually other people’s perspectives as well. It’s not always as simple as what one person says – as we all know.

brisbane were moving in the right direction (no coincidence with how they had been looking closely at what has made adelaide a success) they need to keep that up, rather than ripping up the playbook and resetting again. plenty of young talent in that state
