'Stigma attached to my club': Rudan blasts refs amid major A-League controversy as Wanderers dudded in 4-3 loss

By News / Wire

Coach Marko Rudan has lashed out at match officials after Tom Beadling was sent off in Western Sydney’s 4-3 defeat to local rivals Macarthur FC.

Beadling was banished for a dangerous tackle on Uli Davila in the 52nd minute at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Sunday night before the Bulls’ French striker Valere Germain completed a hat-trick to seal the win.

English-born midfielder Beadling had taken the Macarthur skipper to ground with a challenge from behind.

Afterwards, Rudan unleashed a tirade on referee Adam Kersey and VAR official Alex King, criticising their decision to allow Germain to stay on the pitch while sending Beadling off.

Germain had escaped being shown a card after brandishing his studs against Beadling in the 22nd minute, in what Rudan claimed was a more egregious foul.

“There is an absolute stigma attached to my football club. It’s clear for all to see,” Rudan said.

“For the life of me, how Germain stays on the pitch when he kicks at my player in that first half – I have absolutely no idea.

“When it’s a retaliation, it’s a clear red.”

With Macarthur down 2-3 after two headers from Lachlan Brook and a goal to Nicolas Milanovic, Germain produced a brilliant retort with a header of his own to equalise before the main break.

After a tight second half, the 33-year-old then had the last laugh with the match-winner – again from his head – three minutes into added time.

A livid Wanderers goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas – playing less than 24 hours after arriving from the Socceroos’ Asian Cup campaign in Qatar – argued the ball had not crossed the line.

“The message to us (from VAR) was ‘not enough angles to see if the ball was over the line for the winner’. Come on,” Rudan said.

“I congratulate Macarthur for their three points, but the game could have been so much different had the referee done his job properly.

“The whole game changes if he actually makes the right decision.

“We walk away with nothing even though we deserve to have something.”

Macarthur are now undefeated in six games and have leapfrogged their cross-city rivals to fourth place.

Germain was the architect of the Wanderers’ undoing, slotting the opening goal from the spot in the 18th minute after Beadling handballed.

Brook had crashed celebrations just two minutes after Germain’s opener with his first goal before Milanovic added the visitors’ second in the 28th minute.

Bulls star Raphael then took matters into his own hands with an individual goal in the 31st minute, outmanoeuvring opponents Tate Russell, Jack Clisby and Beadling to level scores again.

The dogged Brook completed his double in the 42nd minute but it was then Germain’s turn to crash the Wanderers’ party.

Asked whether he took issue with the match officiating, Macarthur coach Mile Sterjovski played a straight bat.

“Every decision was correct in the game, every decision,” he said.

Judiciary said The Ref, indicated he booked Germain, but Then didn't record it! Surely the guy is dishonest!

Rudan’s behaviour was and too often is disgraceful. I agree with Waz – hard not go see it as gaslighting the supporters over the obvious fact that he is performing poorly himself.

Me thinks the Bulls are going to have quite the RBB reception if they dare travel to Parramatta next. Challenge accepted!

Even the idea of cards ruining games is questionable because sometimes the 10 vs 11 dynamic is sometimes better, and not giving deserved cards usually leads to a quagmire of a match. It shouldn't be an arbitrary lottery, obviously, but cards are less damaging to a contest than cynical play.

And I'm sure the supporter of the other two clubs would be able to find instances where they felt dudded.

Similar to my comment on another article... it's petulant that a grown man can genuinely believe that referees have a vendetta against a specific team. Grow up & get over yourself. Every team has copped something. Don't have to agree, don't have to praise the referees, but insinuating bias confuses me - what reason would a referee have to do that??? Especially at this level. Some of the general things he said, I agree with - around cards ruining some games, people losing interest etc - but put him in the bin with the Iraqi fans who though Faghani was being biased against them vs Jordan lol. It's a bloody tough gig, refereeing. That being said - not being able to tell whether a goal is a goal is wild to me, in this day and age; given the technology we have for more difficult things to deliberate on.

“ The final goal the replays indicate forearm of the goal keeper is on the line so I think the moment he pulls it back the ball looks like its completely over the line” The still images show Thomas’s elbow right on the back side of the goal line then as you say, his forearm goes back inside the goal where he collects the ball - whatever the rights n wrongs of this, it’s a very tight one

Rudan is just a thug. He always looks like he's ready to hit someone. The man needs counselling. Yes decisions go against you and sometimes they go for you. He shouldn't be let anywhere near a football club. He's a powder keg.

The first incident the replay shows what looked like a lash out, the leg motion is independent of the body, and then Beadling is clutching his inner thigh. The video didnt show any contact with the studs the side of the boot came down on the thigh after the lash out. Maybe Beadling added sauce to it or somehow there was contact and it wasn;t evident on the footage. The Beadling red card if he went for the ball he would have got a yellow card, one leg sort of going for the ball but the body weight and the other leg were going straight through Davilla. That was a very correct card . McBreen said he was anticipating Davilla turning back towards him, well in that case he might have got the ball first but Daville would be in hospital going in with excessive force and then having a player run back into you makes the collision worse not excuses it. The final goal the replays indicate forearm of the goal keeper is on the line so I think the moment he pulls it back the ball looks like its completely over the line.

I find it hard to agree with Rudan, especially when he’s been caught out as a coach (again) and has locked poor WSW in to three more years without a trophy by signing a new contract. But going through his points: 1/ There is no conspiracy against WSW, he’s thinking of Roar, Adelaide & Glory lol. This is pure deflection “don’t look at my teams poor run of results, look over here (…. especially you RBB, he doesn’t want you lot storming the training ground again). 2/ The Red Card was a red card. That was a heavy tackle that endangered his opponent so deservedly saw red. More so than many of the reds we’ve seen recently. 3/ I agree with him, Germain should have been sent off. Both Roar & Sydney copped reds for less last month. But here’s the thing, WSW should have had a red card later in the game (player dives in, bounces off the ball, studs in to an advancing opponent) but that only got yellow and no VAR intervention … what does that tell us? Not that there is a conspiracy against WSW but that the APL has listened to the uproar and asked refs to dial back the VAR intervention (I bet that’s what you’d hear if someone asks — if it is true, they could at least let everyone know!) 4/ The “Goal” - the winner may or may not have crossed the line, tv footage is inconclusive and even VAR wouldn’t be able to resolve that. I don’t know - if the AR is in the correct position, then it’s a goal. He wouldn’t give it otherwise and would instead let var prove him wrong. Remember who Rudan is, remember his background. The fact he is coaching at one of the country’s most important professional clubs is disappointing to say the least - don’t fall for his gaslighting: there’s a reason WSW are under achieving and the reason it is starts with a capital “R”.

I did love Mile’s response. I didn’t like Rudan’s response. That’s how tempers can blow out of control and football absolutely does not need that. Go through the correct channels after the game. Unfortunately, bad decisions get made and over a season they usually balance out. I do feel for the Wanderers though. They seem to have had some rough calls for a few years now. Some of the penalties they didn’t receive and had given against them a couple of seasons ago were absolutely baffling. They did seem to be unlucky again yesterday as well. However, if the ref saw it as a goal then how could VAR overturn the decision on that evidence. We don’t have goal line technology so the decision had to be accepted. There’s no conspiracy! They have been unlucky though and need to let it be known to the referees boss.

Germain does appear to stomp on the Wanderers player in that highlight. A wider camera angle would have helped, but from the limited angle available, it doesn't appear good. Same with the final goal given. The camera angles were very much limited. This is football. This is the way football was for 100+ years. VAR is there to help, but it will never get it right or even be able too. Was an enthralling encounter for the neutral though. I know I enjoyed it.
