Drua 'shocked at racial abuse' as Lomani faces judiciary over Canham blow

By The Roar / Editor

Fijian Drua have released a strongly worded statement following allegations that No.9 Frank Lomani was racially abused during the team’s stunning loss in Melbourne.

Lomani was sent off for an elbow to the head of Josh Canham, and will face a judiciary hearing later Monday where he’s expected to be handed a lengthy ban.

Lomani, a former Rebels player, was allegedly racially abused as he made his way to his seats after the incident.

“The Fijian Drua are shocked at the racial abuse suffered by one of our players during Friday night’s match against the Rebels in Melbourne,” the Drua said in a statement on Monday.

“Clearly there is no place for racism of any kind anywhere. We all have a duty to protect players and staff from situations which go against the values of our game.

“We are thankful to the Melbourne Rebels for reaching out with an apology and for assuring us that an investigation to identify the person(s) at fault is underway.

“We note that the Tournament [SRP] is also independently assessing the matter. We’re also providing Frank Lomani with the support he needs at this time.

“The actions of one or two individuals will not affect the warm relationship we have with rugby fans in Melbourne, which is truly one of the world’s great sporting cities.”

Lomani and teammate Jone Koroiduadua will face the SANZAAR Judiciary after their red cards in the 41-20 loss.

Koroduadua caught Alex Mafi with a headbutt as the Drua lost the plot.

The Drua coach Mick Byrne told the Sydney Morning Herald the alleged racial abuse was a “disgrace” and the fan involved deserved a lifetime ban.

“It’s a disgrace,” Byrne said. “Our players need to be protected. It’s ridiculous that someone is going to come to a game and stoop to that level in 2024. It should be a safe place for players. They are doing their best every weekend.”

SANZAAR told the paper it was investigating the incident.

"Drua 'shocked at racial abuse' " - Racial abuse cannot be condoned at any level. But Fiji, I am shocked at the appalling way your teams play to injure the opposition on the rugby field. Physicality is one thing but when taken to the extreme, it is what it is, unacceptable abuse. This is exemplified in Lomani's case where he took an opportunity to hurt and he did. He is a hotheaded thug and you just need to look at the menace he displayed in his choke hold of Nick White's neck and throat in the Drua v Force game 2 weeks back to see this. Look also at his reaction to the Red Card when given by the Ref - total disbelief that this should be happening to him meaning not a second though about the actions he has just perpetrated. The entry point of 10 weeks should have been added to and the ban should have been at least a year out of the game. As for the idiot who sprayed his (alleged) racial abuse at Lomani - if he did that then there is no place for him in the rugby stadium stands and he should be banned from attending games for 5 years - but perhaps discounted by the same margin that Lomani achieved.

Sure they aren't shocked by their thuggery but some fan being racist. Deflecting mofos. Byrne didn't say anything about his thugs being disgrace. What a disgraceful hypocrite.

It's offside if the 9 isn't part of the ruck - therein lies the rub though.

I agree. And vigilante justice on social media and rugby blogs is just as bad. Let’s see if the accusation has any factual basis first, eh?

As an Anglo-Saxon male I have been on the receiving end of racism in China, Japan, South Africa and USA. None of it was pleasant. My thoughts are if this person is found guilty, ban him etc - whatever the appropriate punishments are. But to have someone come on into this forum and make a blanket statement that Australians are racist, racism very common among Australians, well, thats quite sad and simply untrue.

I haven't. I've found Australians more willing to talk, joke and banter about race/ethnicity/nationality than most, but actual racism is pretty rare. I suspect the idea that "Aussies are racist" comes from misunderstanding Aussie humour.

Yes and he will pay the price. It doesn't detract from the illegality of the cleanout.

Why would a discussion thread that focuses predominately on the topic of the article be deemed “a little off” -have you even read the title? There’s a few hundred comments throwing outrage at Lomani’s act on another thread on this site. Given the game was 4 days ago now ppl will discuss other matters including Canham’s illegal clean out, the style of which he has form in previous seasons. Your preference btw is irrelevant and shows you’ve probably never been racially abused, which once again is the topic of this article.

"This is blatant obstruction. If refs are not going to crack down on it, expect players to react." Fiwiboy's comment implies that if the referee had done a better job Lomani wouldn't of 'had' to assault the player. That comment is taking the blame off Lomani and moving it to the referee (and Canham). This also implies it was a simple reaction to a bad referee's call and not assault which it is in any other circumstance.

Yes but there is a difference between reacting and assaulting a player.

Well from the X feed, plenty heard it and the person was between others that could not have missed it. The woman saying "shame on you" obviously was offended. A life ban from paid sporting grounds would be in order.
