AFL trade period latest news and rumours: Day 7

By Josh / Expert

The clock is really starting to tick now as we enter Day 7 of the 2018 AFL trade period, and clubs have less than 72 hours to finalise their trade deals. Join me here on The Roar for all the latest trade news and rumours, starting from 9am AEST.

As the final days of the trade period begin there’s still a number of big names stuck in limbo, and plenty of smaller names there as well.

The stories of Lachie Neale and Jesse Hogan are well known at the moment as Fremantle obstinately refuse to come to the table on either deal, and it remains unclear whether or not they’ll bend.

Tim Kelly is in a similar position to Neale, as his current club Geelong look set to dig their heels in and are only willing to accept a very good deal.

Chad Wingard and conversely Ryan Burton seem likely to trade places before the week is out but it will depend on how Burton’s USA medical goes today and on whether or not Port and the Hawks can nut out a deal.

However perhaps the biggest mystery at this stage of the trade period is just what will become of Brisbane’s Dayne Beams, who is known to be interested in a trade back to Collingwood.

Beams’ agent Paul Connors confirmed the longstanding rumours about his client recently, saying Beams had notified the Lions that he’d like to return to Collingwood.

Beams is contracted until the end of 2020 and has said he’s happy to fulfill that contract, unless a trade deal is offered to Brisbane which they are happy to accept.

Is that likely to happen this year? Probably not – Collingwood don’t have much in terms of trade currency and probably not a huge amount of salary cap room either.

But hey… it’s the trade period. Anything could happen.

Join me here on The Roar for all the latest trade news and rumours, starting from 9am AEST.

Not sure what you are on about but in no way is my trade suggestion robbing GC. How can it be if they end up with 5 & 21 for pick 2 and it allows them to still take the king twins? You should go check out BF and read the saints board or even better the Carlton board and you will see that this proposal is a very reasonable one in comparison

Slane - you are missing the point, the original post was that the business options might explain the decision. You don't need to discuss the success of the team to know that isn't true. As for post career opportunities Carlton have more than 1 billionaire, Fraser Brown is a massive property developer and the blues have a Carltonians coeterie group, a young professionals group and a Carlton in Business group just for a start - the blues have enough in club money to provide plenty of opportunities without having to rely on the hangers on that come with success

If they didn't then they might as well hand their license back in.

He broke his ankle after he told Carlton he was retiring. Rotten luck for him, he had a future in AFL if it suited him.

They are heavily committed to Isaac Quaynor

His wife’s family are all in Melbourne and he is best mates with Steele Sidebottom. It’s complicated because after building a great culture Pies don’t want to do a Hawthorn and off load a happy player.

Don Freo

Then you'd be happy to send him our way. We'd like him.

25 is in there too.

There's no reason why it would be for less. If Freo finishes high, because we have kept him, it has been worth it. If Freo finishes low, we will get a high first round pick.

Gee I got Crippa’s signature for nothing. Didn’t know you had to pay for them.

I'd say that is settled. The next time that will be visited will be the end of next year.

The swap of pick 14 for 11 and 25 was suggested this morning. That would suit Freo (although I don't think Lobb helps them) because 11 and 14 will be very little difference. 14 should give Freo either Ian Hill, Jordan Clark or Jason Carter.

Just a thought. Would Lions be as attractive to Lachie Neale if Dayne Beams heads off to Collingwood? Just saying

Jeez, I went to sleep for about six hours and not much has happened since then, clearly!! Dunno if it's already been discussed, but the Scully situation is interesting. He'd be a big loss for the Giants, if he does leave - but hopefully not for the pick 50-something that was reported earlier today, which would be insanity.

Carlton have confirmed Ciaran Byrne won't be returning to the AFL in 2019.
