The Brisbane Lions look to remain in touch for the Grand Final this Saturday when they come up against a resurging GWS Giants at the Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:25pm (AEST).
The expectations were high for Brisbane when they hosted the Richmond Tigers at their supposed fortress last weekend, with progression to the Preliminary-finals seeming more than a likelihood.
Despite earning big wins over Semi-final counterparts, West Coast and Geelong, at home earlier this season, Brisbane performed much worse at home against the Tigers, dropping from a 27-point loss at the MCG to 47 at home.
A major positive over the last fortnight has been Lachie Neale’s performances against the Tigers.
In Round 23, the Brownlow fancy managed a massive 51 disposals, 25 contested possessions, 14 clearances and 162 Fantasy Points, before reaching 37 disposals, two goals, 10 clearances and 123 Fantasy points in last Saturday’s loss.
A lot of talk has also surrounded Charlie Cameron, with the All-Australian forward sitting as the fourth (fifth overall) highest goal-kicker remaining in finals and the only genuine small-forward placing inside the top-10.
Cameron has struggled over the last two weeks with the added attention from Richmond’s, Dylan Grimes, only managing three goals and two behinds.
Luke Hodge has garnered similar attention, with the four-time Premiership player entering yet another finals series.
Last week, GWS pulled off a shock, 58-point win against the Western Bulldogs.
Despite an unimpressive close to the season, the Giants have resurged into finals with a physical, high-pressure brand of footy.
Lachie Whitfield was at his usual best in the win, recording 32 disposals, six tackles, seven inside 50s and 131 Fantasy points.
A slow first-half didn’t stop 2019 Coleman medallist, Jeremy Cameron, from having an impact, amassing 25 disposals, two goals, eight marks and 120 Fantasy points.
Of their last five meetings with the Lions, GWS have recorded four wins, though in Round 16 conceded a big loss at home against the redefined Queensland outfit.
Toby Greene managed to escape suspension last week after a physical exchange with Bulldog Marcus Bontempelli; receiving a $7,500 fine as he gets set to line-up this week.
Despite only playing 12 games this year, Josh Kelly remains a huge main-stay in the GWS line-up.
The 24-year-old managed an impressive 22 disposals, three goals and eight score involvements in an impressive return to finals, having missed the short-lived 2018 campaign with an early knee injury against the Swans.
This week, Adam Tomlinson joins the side for Brett Deledio (calf), while Nick Robertson steps in for Brisbane in place of Mitch Robertson (hamstring).
Prediction
They didn’t finish second for nothing.

Poor comment Bruce in the context of the game. Lions scored goals from some questionable umpiring decisions but here is the harsh reality. The Lions had the possession and field position to win this game but they could not execute when it mattered. GWS defence stood up and kept repelling everything that was thrown at them. Sure it was a throw but in the end GWS took their chances and won the game and Lions unfortunately did not. In saying that the Lions had an excellent season and will only grow.

There was a fascinating ebb and flow to this game with the teams exchanging streaks of scoring multiple consecutive goals. Looked like the Lions were to pull out the win when they took that late lead but Daniels superbly just outran the Brisbane Lions player, grabbed the loose ball, ran unchecked downfield and booted in the match winner. It was a very dramatic way to win but GWS, being their 3rd preliminary final in last 4 years, also showed they have the ability to win close ones.

You get used to him if you get on the Roar often enough - best ignored I find particularly when he's in this sort of form.

Hope the 'Pies bring an enforcer in from their VFL side to take Greene out before he gouges another player. The players will have to do what the MRO and tribunal refuse in order to provide a safe(r) work place.

I’m a Cats supporter, but I’m a QLDer and the Lions are my 2nd team. Gee, they did well to hang in there but McCluggage no 6 was pi ss poor. For the majority of the 2nd half , Spiritless . So many other great performances by the Lions. Martin, Hodge, Cameron...

I think GWS are a better team so I’m glad they won. They should be better opposition for the Pies.

FULL-TIME The GWS Giants advance to a preliminary final against Collingwood next with following a three-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba. The Giants started much better in the first to kick four unanswered goals with their physical brand of footy. Though it was off the back of Zorko's efforts that saw the Lions win the term with five goals to four. In the second, GWS picked up their game to carry themselves to a two goal led into half-time. They recorded five for the term with considerable efforts from Greene and Williams. For the term, Lions only managed the two. In the third, Lions recorded just the two again but kept the Giants to one with six behinds as they pressed on their tails into the fourth. They managed to come back late in the final term following a goal from Christensen, but it was Daniels who took the game to the depth, winning the game with an on the run banana in his only goal for the game. Toby Greene led the game in Fantasy points on 115, accompanying his performance with two goals, 30 disposals and five tackles. Coleman Medalist, Jeremy Cameron, secured three goals for the game with 16 disposals and six marks, with Jeremy Finlayson also kicking two for the night. For the Lions, Eric Hipwood and Charlie Cameron were important on goals - kicking three and two respectively. Dayne Zorko also led his side well with 108 Fantasy points, 25 disposals, one goal, six clearances, five tackles and 10 inside 50s. The Giants progress to their third Preliminary-final in four years next week, coming up against Collingwood for a chance at the Grand Final. Lions 11.14 (80) Giants 12.11 (83)

Umpires tried their hardest to get the Lions home. Wasn't to be. Would have been belted next week anyway.

I am happy with the Giants winning. Will give the Pies more of a contest next week.

It was but Hipwoods goal was the result of a throw also that balanced those two goals out.
