The Carlton Blues welcome the Collingwood Magpies to the Melbourne Cricket today looking to bounce back after an embarrassing performance from the week before. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 1:45pm (AEST).
It is difficult to comprehend what Brendon Bolton’s Blues put together against the North Melbourne Kangaroos last week.
The 58-point loss at Marvel Stadium was by far the worst performance Carlton have put forward this season.
The Kangaroos ran harder, and ultimately used the ball better. At times, it appeared to be nothing more than a training drill for the club from Arden Street.
How much longer do the Blues faithful put up with such performances? Patience much be wearing thin.
There were a few players that weren’t too bad. Zac Fisher found the ball 26 times and looked a threat. Jack Ziebell did a terrific job on Patrick Cripps, but the midfielder still showed his class with a 25-disposal game, which included two majors. However, that was about it from a positive perspective.
In team news this week for the Blues, Matthew Kreuzer, Mitch McGovern and Will Setterfield come into the side. Liam Jones (concussion), Lochie O’Brien (omitted) and Andrew Phillips (omitted) all make way.
As for Nathan Buckley’s Collingwood, they were exceptional against the Port Adelaide Power at Marvel Stadium last week, especially in the first quarter.
The Magpies were 39-point victors, and showed why they are a premiership favourite for many.
Scott Pendlebury led the way in terms of standout individual performances. The midfielder had a 36-disposal game and continued his form from Anzac Day.
Jaidyn Stephenson was sensational in front of goal, finishing the game with four majors. Jamie Elliott also had a terrific game, also finishing the match with four majors.
In team news this week for the Magpies, Rupert Wills and Chris Mayne come into the side. Taylor Adams (groin) and Dayne Beams (hip) make way.
Prediction
It is impossible to look past the Magpies. They are such a better outfit than the Blues, and it will show come the final result.
Collingwood by 37 points.

31 turnovers from 146 touches so far this year, so roughly 20% not half. As for not improving, he is averaging more possessions, more goals, more behinds, more clearances, more marks inside 50, more score involvements, more metre gained pretty much more of everything. He just needs to adapt to disposing the ball under AFL pressure, which simply can't be done in the vfl

How will he not improve it at VFL? He's obviously not improving it at AFL level. No point getting 20 touches if you turn half of them over.

I think Stocker was worth the trade. He has great skill off both feet and can hit targets. Playing out of position in your second game i think he was more than adequate. On Kornes he is just not worth the time. He needs to stand on a chair just to raise his IQ into double digits and the Guild of Village Idiots have repeatedly rejected his application!!

Yeah he was banging on about it on th footy show as well, the misrepresentation of the deal is extraordinary but consistent. He and Barrett still trying to get Bolton sacked, claiming this loss was as bad as the North loss, that the blues get a free ride in the media and then Cornes highlighted some incredibly minor positioning errors the blues players made in the last 5 minutes, the worst being Thomas getting beaten by Brown despite Thomas getting front position and having a hand on Brown the whole time.

I’m happy with Stocker and pick 14 in exchange for pick 1 based on what I’ve seen to date. Still think there’s a good chance it could be pick 4 or 5 for pick 10 or 11 yet.

Interesting that he was named in the best in the HS

That flog Kane Cornes at it again. On the AFL website he said the swap pick was a disaster as the Crows at this stage get pick 1 while Carlton get pick 14. No mention that Carlton already have Stocker who in only his second game, playing in a position not normal for him looked good.

Two things disturbed me after the game which I thought were out of character. 1. Bucks over reaction to the win. It wasn’t impressive enough to look so happy and go back slapping. It was lucky. We looked done 7 minutes from the finish. I can only assume maybe he was trying to get our confidence going and it was calculated. 2. You never should say in a presser “we wanted it more”. It is disrespectful to the opposition and gives them ammunition next time. Once again, that was either clumsy or calculated, will give him the benefit of the doubt but didn’t like it.

I agree the Blues were hard done by Bow Man. Umpiring is in disarray.

Clearly struggling with confidence in his disposal which is ultimately making him a weak link in our team. With Simpson and Newman coming back and Kennedy putting pressure on from the twos, there will be genuine competition for spots in our team. I wouldn’t like to see Stocker dropped as he looked good yesterday and his disposal is very good. I don’t think Dows ever played a game in the twos. A couple of weeks there may do him the world of good.

They asked him about it and he simply said it is a hard game to umpire and a chance ache bagging umpires is not a good look. Off the top of my head if I was going to list questionable decisions that directly impacted the scoring I would say De Goey backing into Cripps to block and winning the free forum realistic attempt, the hold call against McKay on the wing, Moore coming back with the flight on Charlie Curnow and clearly making front in contact, Reid chopping the arms on plowman that lead to De Goey's soccer goal, Plowman being thrown out of the way by Elliott (?) to allow the goal through (not to mention it looked like Elliott touched it) and then the most offensive of all was De Goey putting his knee on Stocker while he lay on the ground for no reason right in front of the umpire only for the umpure to say "there is no need for that" but not actually reverse the free kick.

I agree Anzac Day so many bad calls early people forgot about and only focused on the last qtr.

Is 8 free kicks in one game the lowest of any side this year Macca? Did Bolts address it o the presser?
Macca
Roar Rookie
8 free kicks for an entire game Knoxy? 2 free kicks to the blues in the whole second half and it was just the way it was? Fwiw the lowest average free kicks for so far this year is 15.7, the blues got half that.

For every bad decision that went against Essendon on Anzac Day I can show you one that went against the Pies. Like Pete said, the umpiring has been very poor this year. As for the free kick count today, has it ever occured to you that the reason it was so one sided might be because one team was giving away more free kicks than the other? I'm not saying that there weren't bad decisions but it's just something to think about.

Depends on the weakness, Dow's weakness is hitting targets by foot under pressure, he won't improve that at VFL level. He still had 20 touches and 4 clearances, he is hardly struggling

No offense Peter just saying that the pies are getting the rub of the greens I have watched 3 coll games this year lions game at the gabba in the first half Essendon when at vital moments in the game and again today as a neutral umpires seem to be black and white eyed is it a sub conscious decision or are the umpires blind ?
Kane

This is why people get dropped, to improve on weakness. Keeping on giving blokes games only keeps them in bad habits and they don't learn.

It came down to consistency in the end. Award 2 free kicks per quarter to the Blues and let the chips fall where they may. Cripps should have had at least four free kicks awarded that he didn't get. I think the umpires get in a mindset, not a conspiratorial one and see things in black and white.

Reminiscent of the Lions of last year.
