Round 6 of the AFL comes to a close as the dangerous Carlton Blues try to slow the red-hot Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 6:45pm (AEST).
After an encouraging fortnight that netted two wins, the Blues couldn’t make it three on the bounce against the Saints last Thursday night. As has been typical of them in 2020, a slow start doomed them and, although they recovered in the second half, they couldn’t close the gap before the siren had sounded.
It’s been a very encouraging patch of form for the Bulldogs, however. After a woeful 0-2 start, they’ve been lights out – knocking off the Giants, Swans and Kangaroos in convincing fashion. Billed as a top four smokey at the start of the season, the Doggies are finally hitting peak form and will look to put Carlton to the sword.
Apart from last year’s drought-breaking 44-point win, the Blues have had a tough time of it against the Bulldogs of late – losing six of the last seven encounters. Neither side has an encouraging record at Metricon Stadium, with Carlton only 3-3 since it was redeveloped and the Bulldogs a poor 1-2. That said, the Dogs haven’t visited the venue since 2014.

Missed one - Gibbons left foot turnover marked by Williams 40 metres from Carltons goal (3min.10 sec left in 3rd quarter) Gibbons early in the last quarter hit Newnes with his left foot (the one you mentioned) + 2 really smart plays: Toe poke inside 50 resulted in McKay goal. Slap on over the top inside 50 resulted in Betts goal.

Watched a condensed replay (about 40mins) of the game today with not much else happening. A few more takeaways: Gee the Bulldogs get a good run with the umpires. Setterfield didnt win centre bounce clearances but was good around the ground (especially the first 3 quarters). Kennedy I like in the centre bounces. SPS works fits well at HB. J.Martin tackling has improved - very good this game. Williamson hasn't played many games but is improving nicely. Charlie Curnow, Nic Newman, Caleb Marchbank, Matthew Kreuzer, Jack Silvagni, Paddy Dow, Zac Fisher not in the team shows we actually have some depth.

Kennedy is looking the fittest he's ever looked, he looks like a footballer now and he's playing like one. Russell has done a ripper job with him and a few other blokes as well. If we continue on playing this way and get a fully fit Curnow next year then anything can happen. Still loving Kade Simpson's game.

Before you watch the game, look at the last time you played Bulldogs and Tim English he had a very good game and when you watch the game watch the impact Pittonet has on the centre bounce, he played a very good game last night, but no one giving him any credit, he is a huge difference to the way the Blues are playing.

I agree (*terrible after half time). Would just put the blame on the Hawks. This game was a ripper

Totally agree Parkside. We are still one of the top clearance teams despite Crippa having a quiet 3 weeks. Setterfield has certainly improved on his inside work and has helped us maintain our clearance totals. I agree that at times his disposal is not good but you could say that about players like Cripps & Bontempelli.

I will have to disagree with you on Setterfield but Kennedy has all the tools to be a really good onballer (ok forward as well but we don't need him there), he just needs to string games together consistently.

Yes you are totally correct. Was really good to see. His set shots and left foot are his weaknesses but overall he has been steadily improving. I noticed a really smart knock on inside 50 as well.

:unhappy: Sorry to hear I think Col.

I’m with Col. You are focussing on weaknesses Stix look at his strengths. He won a lot of clearances and neutralised plenty. Both he and Kennedy are on ballers and that is where they should primarily be played. It also allows Cripps to rest forward where he can be very dangerous.

But not in this game. I’ve been critical of his goal kicking and decision making but tonight he was brilliant- couldn’t fault him.

Look he had a good game no doubt but doesn't dispose of the ball quick enough inside, was also caught holding the ball a couple of times and a couple of sloppy kicks down back - point is half forward/forward 50 is where he is damaging to the opposition not us. We get lots of shots on goal when he is forward of centre directly because of him.

Why are you worried about people trying to be paid for rubbish comments, only take on board people that have real insight to the game, not those really to sell their soul for cash.

Sure did, have you seen all the left foot shanks, turnovers and out on the fulls in previous games? (he was generally kicking further than 20 metres though)

Nah - just lost interest last year. His always been good

Disagree about Setterfield Stix. I would have him in our top 2 players in tonight’s game. Kennedy played very well too.

Did you see Gibbons 20 metre left foot pass in the last qtr. Lowered his eyes and spotted up target on 50.

Don’t think so Macca. I have a bad knee and will probably be having a knee replacement in September. Very hard walking up & down stairs.
