The 2019 JLT Series comes to a conclusion as the Collingwood Magpies host the Carlton Blues in a Monday afternoon clash at Morwell Recreation Reserve. Join The Roar from 2:10pm (AEDT) for live scores and commentary.
It’s the final game of pre-season for both these teams, and they’ll both be going in buoyed by last weekend’s results.
Carlton surprised arch-rivals Essendon, defeating them by 9 points. Collingwood, for their part, held off a spirited Fremantle outfit to win by 27 points in West Australia.
This clash will likely be a tough one for both outfits, as they fine-tune their team before the first round in a little under two weeks time. For the Blues, Collingwood will be a tougher opponent than the Dons last week, but Collingwood will not want to underestimate today’s opponents.
Collingwood went into last week with a reasonably strong side, but it gets even stronger this week. Mason Cox, Adam Treloar, Jeremy Howe, Brayden Maynard, Tyson Goldsack and former Docker Chris Mayne joining the squad for today’s clash. First-year players Isaac Quaynor, Nathan Murphy, Rupert Mills and Jash Daicos have all been excluded.
Carlton’s sharpened up their team a little too. They’ve made four changes, with Matthew Lobbe, Lochie O’Brien, Angus Schumacher and Jack Silvagni all deporting the team. Some big names are in: Alex Fasolo and Levi Casoubolt join the team, while Liam Stocker and Patrick Kerr will also get a chance to perform in pre-season.
Prediction
I genuinely reckon this will be a close clash. Collingwood have the advantage in experience and talent, but the Blues did nothing but impress last weekend and cannot be conclusively ruled out of this one. My heart says who knows, but my head argues for Collingwood. And my head wins out. The Pies, by around 20 points.
Collingwood by 23 points.

It’s hard to tell from watching on TV but I think you are correct about our defensive structures making Collingwood chip it around probably more than they would have liked.

Col - I did t see much of the game, but outside of individual performances from Cuningham, McKay and SPS the fact that the blues had more inside 50's despite being smashed in disposals seems to support what I noticed from the little I watched, the blues defensive structure seemed to hold up really well.

Interesting that neither Stocker or Kerr were used off the bench so instead of using 24 players Bolton went with the standard 22.

Correct.

It seems so Doc. Played on a suburban ground. Didn't watch it. Can't wait for the real stuff.

So Carlton were one or two sloppy kicks away from winning this?

Collingwood have withstood a fierce late challenge from a spirited Carlton outfit, winning by four points in a pre season clash at Morwell. The first quarter primarily showcased Collingwood’s considerable midfield dominance, yet also frustrated Pies fans with inaccuracy than meant they couldn’t build a larger early lead. Carlton were performing well enough, but were hamstrung by a young midfield being placed under considerable pressure by the Pies’ much cleaner unit. It was advantage Pies at the first break. The second quarter began much more brightly for the Blues, as they added four goals to snatch the lead briefly, and continued their sprightly performance even as the Magpies added three of their own to take the lead, again, into the main break. The second half was a bit of a topsy turvy one, as both teams had good opportunities to score - notwithstanding some frustrating inaccuracy from both sides. Whilst Collingwood always had the lead towards the end, a spirited last quarter surge from Carlton certainly made things interesting. Collingwood's prolific midfield was just that - Treloar (42 touches), Crisp (33 off a excellent performance off half-back), Sidebottom (31) and Pendlebury (26) were dominant for large periods. Josh Thomas performed well in attack, booting three majors, whilst Jamie Elliott was also decent with two. Brodie Grundy won his battle in the ruck, although Carlton's Andrew Phillips was by no means embarrassed. Carlton's Kade Simpson was great with 28 touches, Sam Petrevski-Seton was admirable with 23 and Cripps performed well as usual with 23 of his own. Harry McKay was their best forward with a trio of majors (including two in a early last quarter blitz), whilst Charlie Curnow looked good but was inaccurate with 1.2. RUSHED BEHIND CARLTON Carlton still trying their hardest to win this game, and here's a vital chance. Number one pick Sam Walsh takes a grab and will go for goal! It's a good looking kick, but falls just short and the Magpies desperately rush the behind! Collingwood: 11.11 (77) Carlton: 10.13 (73)
