Old rivals Carlton and Essendon are due to put on a classic scrappy fight at the MCG in Round 11. Join The Roar at 3:20pm for live scores and commentary on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams are struggling big time, and a result either way could spell trouble for the remainder of 2019.

Carlton has shown improvement in parts, but overall, has been disappointing having won one game. Coach Bolton continues to suggest big steps forward are being taken – namely due to winning more quarters than a few other clubs – but the results speak for themselves.

The Blues, however, seem to be well equipped for a slog. The inclusion of Will Setterfield looks a good one for the conditions, while Alex Fasolo and Darcy Lang have earned their spots in the team.

For as disappointing as Carlton has been, Essendon had enormous expectation placed on them pre-season, only four them to be languishing with four wins after 10 rounds.

The Bombers struggled against the Tigers until the last quarter, where it appeared more that Richmond changed its style rather than a red and black siege.

Essendon are without Dylan Shiel and Jake Stringer from last week’s game, which is enormous in the grand scheme of things.

The conditions may suit the likes of Darcy Parish and Kyle Langford to step up again, but there are plenty of issues in terms of class and moving the ball forward.

Prediction
If the rain hits hard, Carlton has a red-hot chance here.

The team hasn’t been great, but it seems to match up well against Essendon.

Cripps, Kennedy, Setterfield and Walsh will love the conditions, while the class of Petrevski-Seton should be able to re-emerge against a weaker Essendon midfield.

For the Bombers to win, they really need huge games out of Dyson Heppell and Zach Merrett. Both have posted good numbers this season, but we are yet to see them have dominant performances, translating these numbers into something tangible.

It may be fraught with danger, but I’m going with the Blues.

Carlton by 11 points.

That’s the mystery to me Pete. We looked very good against the Dog, Hawks and Pies but have not come close to replicating that form the last three games. We can blame the coach but the lack of effort from the players astounds me.

When we smashed the Dogs and were 6 goals up against the Hawks at half time it looked like the improvement was there. Many were saying the long term future of the Blues looked bright. I think we’ve seen the potential that is there but the current coaching staff is not developing and getting the best out of that talent. We should at least be competing against the current 3 and 4 win teams on the ladder. Why we are not can only be the responsibility of the current coaching staff.

Not sure how Fasolo can get a game with any team, has been treading water for years. One of those players that looked better when he was surrounded by quality players.

Bolton is a stats man that thinks he has some sort of deep insight. He certainly does NOT! No-one else understands what he's on about - including the players. Blues don't need any more 1st round draft picks. They need to buy some umpires (like West Coast do) and some thugs. They are too soft!! Bring back Bret Ratten, as the coach, buy some of the umps and get some thugs (probably from Fremantle or West Coast) ASAP...

None are available until you make them a massive offer.

Who is a experienced successful coach that is available ? Scott is not one. I think Lyon should not get a extension at Freo, he would pounce on a big offer. He has been at Freo to long, they need fresh air. He might learn from his mistakes over here and can offer experience. He is held in high regard still in Victoria. David King reckons North should go for him.

Jonboy, not questioning whether Sumich would be a good coach but a club in Carlton’s position have to look for an experienced successful coach. They can’t afford to gamble on anyone without senior coaching experience.

No, I said is Scott the best. IMO it would be disastrous to appoint a permanent coach mid season because you are limiting your choices.

Peter Sumich !! Great communicator, brilliant football brain. This bloke has gone close over the years and is still bursting to get a gig. I will guarantee he is good as anyone out there and he would not demand the dollars that some would be after. Still working with kids in the system in WA. Be surprised if he is not being looked at anyway.

As I said interim coach! He’s only filling the seat. Worst thing you could do was to pick the coach for the next three seasons now. You said bit about Is Brad Scott the next coach? You’ve got 3 months to find out. Free the young guys up to just attack attack and attack. 30 odd points against team missing probably close to their best 5 players is embarrassing

Dingo. I would be putting my house on the Lions regardless of who is coaching us.

He got that job after Malthouse was sacked and from memory went 3 - 10.

He had plenty of opportunities but did nothing and applied zero pressure. His VFL form has been ordinary so I don’t know how he deserved a senior game.

1st step is admitting there’s a problem Col.... if as the talk is this arvo Carlton are making the 1st but hardest step. I’m not having the list as bad as people make out! You’ve got a high amount of high draft picks... All they need is some freedom to play! I for one hope you keep Bolton, you sack him this week, I have huge fears for my Lions next game. I know we’ve been good but it’s amazing what a change of coach does. Especially 1st week, what can you change in a week? You can let them just play!

Pete, I honestly thought we would see improvement in some of the youngsters like Dow, SPS, Fisher and Charlie and our depth would be stronger. Today’s game showed Fasolo is useless, Lang is below average and Kennedy is slower than me and I have 2 bung knees. Dow’s kicking is woeful, SPS and Fisher are too inconsistent and Charlie seems to play in bursts then goes missing. Funnily enough our most improved player the last couple of weeks has been Levi but once Jones is fit they can’t play him down back. The players look disinterested and lack effort. Even Crippa the last couple of games looks like he has given up carrying the team.

Peter, I have no doubt Scott is a good coach but is he the best? They would have to wait until the end of the season until they can offer deals to current coaches. Oh you can have Fasolo back too.
