The Port Adelaide Power have belted the Essendon Bombers by 59 points on Saturday afternoon in Melbourne.
The victory keeps the finals push alive for the Power, who dominated most of the game, but were only able to run away with it in the second half, on the back of an enormous third quarter as Essendon fell apart.
The Bombers were wasteful in front of goal, and poor with their accuracy kicking in general play, and it told on the scoreboard as the Power ran away with the contest in dominant fashion.
While it was Robbie Gray who led the way during the first half with three goals, Dan Houston, Connor Rozee and Todd Marshall were their best during the second half.
Essendon have plenty to work on after that game, and while their start wasn’t horrendous, they just always looked a step behind Port Adelaide throughout the contest.
Final score
Essendon Bombers 9.13.67
Port Adelaide Power 19.12.126
The Essendon Bombers will be out to keep their winning streak going against the inconsistent Port Adelaide Power in a critical Round 20 contest. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of the match from 1:45pm (AEST).
There is no bouncing around just how important this game is for both clubs, and the in-form Bombers can all but wrap up a spot in the top eight with victory.
It would take them to 48 competition points with three weeks to play, and while they are till at the back-end of the eight, a fifth straight win would keep them at least eight points from danger.
The other way to look at it for the Dons is that a win would move them to within striking distance of the top four and double chance come the finals, or, worst-case scenario, a likely shot at finishing fifth or sixth to play at home in Week 1 of the finals.
While this is an important game for the Bombers, it’s not quite make or break for the club like it is for their opponents, who have been simply impossible to get a read on in 2019.
The Power sit tenth on the ladder, and while they are just four points out of the eight, they have lost three on the hop, with two of those coming at home.
While Port Adelaide have faced some tough opposition, they just haven’t been able to be consistent and this does feel like a must-win game to arrest their slide.
Containing a strong Essendon midfield will be absolutely critical if they are going to walk away with the four points, with the form of Dylan Shiel, Daniel Clarke, Orazio Fantasia and Daniel Zaharakis making life fairly easy up front for Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti and co.
Paddy Ryder and Travis Boak will be the main men for the Power if they are going to fall over the line, with the need to win rucks and stoppages about as important as anything for Port.
Prediction
How can you tip the Power? They are about as inconsistent as it gets, and while logic might say they are due a good performance, the Bombers are finishing 2019 with a very wet sail.
Bombers by 25.

Nine goals doesn’t win you (m)any games of football, unless you’re playing the Suns. The Bombers despite their recent form, only have superior goal scoring to the sides below them except the Dogs and Roos. Oh ,and Adelaide.

I don't know what to think. So up and down, our forwards were creating a contest today and we kicked straight, that was about it.

No chance unless the board is totally incompetent.

Dreadful skills. We have guys playing who would struggle to get a game in the 2s at other clubs, Langford and Clarke to mention a couple. With the injuries that we have, we just don’t have the cattle to win. Our first quarters must be close to the worst in the league too.

I guess James that may well be highly significant. It depends on Port though who we know are the flakiest week to week side in the competition. As for the Pies, we win on the Bombers decreasing percentage but may get bitten if Port make it.

Big loss like this has been coming for a while so not too upset about it. Our skills are still awful though why haven't our skills improved at all?

Seems that way. The injury to Parish was a key moment today. Worrying moving forward as well.

Well, that'll wrap up our live coverage of this AFL game as the Port Adelaide Power ran over the top of the Essendon Bombers. Hopefully you enjoyed the call. I'll be back for the NRL at 5:30pm (AEST), however, the AFL doesn't stop here. GWS and Sydney are playing out a cracker in the fourth quarter currently, while you can also join our coverage of the Fremantle Dockers and Geelong Cats. Bye for now.

Could it be another year of the Bombers starting slow, coming home hard but exhausting themselves in the process and fizzling out? Injuries haven’t helped then either. Also shows how a side can get confidence which then releases the shackles of structure a little, they take more risks, run forward harder and then momentum carries then even further ahead? GWS did that to the Pies in their first qtr run. (Confidence x scoreboard results) + (pressure of maintaining structure decrease) = momentum.

We've just gone from 104 to 100, with the Power going from 102 to 106. They have a decent run home and could easily finish above us purely because of that percentage change.

Is this a case of Essendon just missing too many key players (ala Collingwood) or Port Adelaide playing super (only missed 2 shots from 15 set shots) or something else.

FULLTIME The Power just look to run the clock down here, and they will do that pretty easily in the end as Marshall takes the mark in defence, then they go out to the wing. Zaharakis kicked back to the goal square, but that'll be that. The Power have run out 59-point winners in a huge result for the club which keeps their finals push alive and well. Bombers 9.13 (67) Power 19.12 (126)

No offence Bombers, but this percentage of yours dropping before my eyes is good for the Pies.

Q4 1' - GOAL POWER, DAN HOUSTON The Power with a mountain of space now, chipping it around, before Houston grabs a mark about 55 out. He is going to line the shot up from long range, and that sails through! What a kick. Bombers 9.13 (67) Power 19.12 (126)
