The Geelong Cats will take a trip up the highway to the MCG to host the Collingwood Magpies in a Friday night blockbuster final. Join The Roar for coverage of the first qualifying final, with a blog of the match starting at 7:50pm AEST.

There has been enough said in the past fortnight about Geelong playing ‘home’ finals at the MCG, so let’s move on.

This should be a brilliant match-up, two quality teams going head-to-head and very evenly matched across the board.

The winner will advance to a home preliminary final after a week off, while the loser will host a semi-final against the West Coast Eagles next weekend.

In Round 23, the Geelong Cats finished on a good note, smashing the Carlton Blues by 68-points and finding their attacking groove once again.

The Magpies also finished the home-and-away season well, with an 11-point victory over Essendon.

Collingwood did its part to get a second-chance in finals and Hawthorn helped them out by beating the Eagles.

Both the Cats and Pies have made changes at selection.

Geelong lose Cameron Guthrie to calf soreness, with Tom Atkins named to replace him.

Jake Kolodjashnij will return after missing round 23 through injury, taking Lachie Henderson’s place in the back pocket.

Tom Atkins and Gryan Miers will get their first taste of AFL finals action when they run onto the field from the bench minutes into the clash.

Collingwood is boosted by the return of trio Jaidyn Stephenson, Jordan De Goey and Steele Sidebottom.

With De Goey’s return from a hamstring injury and Stephenson’s first AFL game back following his gambling suspension, it will be an exciting forward line, but how will it gel?

It’s been 88 days since Stephenson last stepped onto an AFL field; after just one competitive game in the VFL, how will the second-year player go?

The inclusions mean heartbreak for three others, with Jack Madgen, Matthew Scharenberg and Travis Varcoe all omitted in the lead up to this clash.

John Noble and Rupert Wills have held their positions and will start on the interchange.

The last time these two teams played was in round one, Geelong outlasting Collingwood in a scrappy but enthralling contest.

A narrow seven-point win started the Cats off on a positive note, the beginning of their dominant first half of the season.

Scott Pendlebury reaches the 300-game milestone this Friday night, just the third Collingwood player to get there.

The five-time best and fairest, six-time All Australian, three-time ANZAC Day medallist, Norm Smith Medallist, premiership player and current Collingwood captain has had another stellar year.

Time appears to stop for Pendlebury, the number 10 is described by his fellow AFL club leaders as “smooth”, “professional” and “classy”.

Prediction
This final is so hard to pick, a likely low-scoring encounter – around the ten-goal mark – will keep us all on the edge of our seats.

Geelong to overcome its post-bye hoodoo and hold on in a thriller.

Geelong by two points.

Pies have dodged a bullet. If Richmond win tonight they'll meet GWS or Brisbane at the 'G. That's an automatic win. I think if they ran into Richmond, West Coast, even Western they lose. Richmond and West Coast are the form teams of the comp and they will avoid them. At the end of the day, only scraped over the line against a flaky Geelong team on your home ground.

Great win for the Pies against top quality opposition. Scores are irrelevant except for who's in front; because the point of this sport and partic the finals is to win the match at hand, not please everyone.

Judge each game on its merits rather than scores Doc. Cats are a great side. You don’t finish top without being one.

Geelong got banged up, beaten up and lost to a side that could only score 9.7. That’s what the Bombers scored…. Let’s hope for a better game from the minor premiers next week. Will Stanley be back? Naitanui might hope so.

The Collingwood Magpies have defeated the Geelong Cats by 10 points at the MCG on Friday night, booking themselves a preliminary final spot in the process. For Geelong, it’s back to the drawing board with plenty to improve when they take on the Eagles in a likely Friday night blockbuster. Other than the last five minutes, the match was not really all that exciting. It was a low-scoring affair, as expected, but lost its zing early with Collingwood dominating the contest. There were patches where Geelong worked themselves into it, but they were short lived and made no real impression where it matters: on the scoreboard. In the first half Jeremy Howe was intercepting everything in defence, while in the second half it was Darcy Moore, backing himself to take the mark and take the game on. Patrick Dangerfield battled all night with 32 disposals, a goal and seven clearances. Tim Kelly also picked up 28 disposals and a goal, while Brandon Parfitt had 22 disposals, kicked a goal and laid nine tackles. Gary Ablett and Tom Hawkins failed to put majors on the board; All Australian Tom Stewart was strong in his intercepting across the backline. The Magpies had many contributors tonight; early Jamie Elliott and Jaidyn Stephenson were firing, while the experienced players stood up in the slower patches to turn the game back on their terms. Steele Sidebottom returned with impressive numbers, 33 disposals, a goal and five tackles. John Noble and Rupert Wills held their positions at selection and did not look out of place at all in the step up to finals intensity. Scott Pendlebury finished with 24 disposals, a goal, nine tackles and three clearances in his 300th AFL game. Again, Geelong made a late change. This time it was Rhys Stanley omitted for Sam Menegola, meaning Mark Blicavs and Esava Ratugolea were left to manage the ruck contest. “We mucked up the weather forecast”, said Chris Scott, but the rain didn’t come. The lack of confidence in Rhys Stanley was a poor decision in the end, Brodie Grundy dominated the ruck with 47 hit-outs. Plenty of injury concerns out of the match, Mitch Duncan’s match was done at half-time with a left knee injury and Gary Rohan was on and off with leg complaints throughout the night. There was confusion at the start of the game with Jed Bews pulling up sore from the final warm up, but he got on the field for the first bounce. Luke Dahlhaus also got a corky early, but played out the game. For the Pies, Jordan De Goey came off in the second term with hamstring tightness and didn’t play any further part in the game. Levi Greenwood’s day was also done in the first half, his knee the concern. It is a suspected ACL according to Buckley. Next up the Geelong Cats face the West Coast Eagles in the second week of finals. The reigning premiers were destructive in Perth on Thursday night and will pose a huge challenge for the up-and-down Cats. Collingwood will have the week off, while their preliminary final opponent is decided. Final Score Geelong 7.9. 51 Collingwood 9.7. 61

Duncan in a big knee brace, De Goey looks dejected and not sure what to read into Greenwood's injury. Rohan also didn't come back onto the ground in the last 5 minutes, Cat's had lost hope of a victory and didn't want to risk further injury. Bit of excitement in the last few minutes, and the better side tonight held on for the win.
