It’s a Saturday night game to savour, as the Geelong Cats host the Melbourne Demons at GMBHA Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:25pm AEDT.

You get the sense that, already, this is an important clash for both squads playing tonight. One squad – Geelong – is striving to lock in a 2-0 beginning to their season.

The other, Melbourne, is desperate to avoid slumping to a 0-2 start, given drama that’ll naturally begin to surround that form line.

Geelong’s opening round was decent but not brilliant – they defeated Collingwood in a scrappy game that never reached any major heights.

Melbourne’s was, well, considerably worse that that – being pummelled by Port Adelaide in a game they were comfortable favourites in. So, yes. A lot is riding on this clash.

Last year’s two regular season fixtures between these two were very close fought encounters, before their elimination final saw Melbourne crush a listless Cats side. I’m not expecting that to happen tonight.

A lot of the focus in this clash will be observing how Geelong limits the influence of Max Gawn – something which worked exceptionally well for Port last weekend and which will be vital today.

Melbourne’s task is to see its talented midfield unit back to form, given its underwhelming performance last weekend.

In terms of selection changes, it’s very simple for the Cats. They’ve made none.

Melbourne, reacting to last week’s loss, have made three. Corey Wagner, Charlie Spargo and Marty Hore all depart the side.

The Demons will be welcoming three new players to their side: former Suns Stephen May and Kade Kolodjashnij make their first appearances, while Jay Lockhart will debut for the club.

Prediction
This is a game that Melbourne are really, really going to want to win. A 0-2 start will heap the pressure, particularly if they perform as badly as last Saturday.

I’m tipping they’ll be a helluva lot better than the Port Adelaide clash, but I think Geelong will be better still.

It should be close, and I wouldn’t be surprised per se if the Demons win, but I’ll be backing the Cats to win at home.

Geelong by 14 points

I tipped the Cats to be 6th preseason but at the moment would be raising that to top 4. I think after the finals last year most wrote off those two late season smashings the Cats delivered to Freo and the Suns, but that was a sign of the potential. Then you add the preseason tweaks and the Cats are doing what Sydney aren't....reinventing themselves.

No problem, thanks for commenting along (as usual!). Have a good Sunday, Birdman. Hope Tassie provides better weather for you than SA's providing for me.

Geelong have comfortably defeated a throughly outclassed Melbourne, winning by 80 points on a wet Saturday night. Whilst Melbourne did have some impressive periods of momentum - particularly at the end of the second + beginning of the third terms - they were largely outclassed by a superior Geelong outfit. When the Demons did have the football on their term, they were unable to make anything substantial scoring wise of it, and Geelong continually were able to maximise their (many) opportunities. That meant that Geelong, even on a very wet evening, sent through 20 goals, whilst confining their opponents to a measly six. Clayton Oliver, on a dark night for the Dees, was superb with 44 disposals, whilst Dangerfield was excellent with 37 for Geelong. Brayshaw, Kelly and Constable were also in fine form. Gary Rohan was in good stead up forward for the Cats, and Melksham was Melbourne's highest scorer. Melbourne face Essendon in what is sure to be an intriguing clash next Friday, whilst Geelong travel to Adelaide to face, well, Adelaide. Geelong: 20.6 (126) Melbourne: 6.10 (46)

The 2018 AFLX premier obviously drank too much of their own bathwater coming in to 2019. If David King tips you for the flag, be very afraid.

Statement game for both clubs. Cats a premiership contender, Demons still have a monkey on the back the size of King Kong.

GOAL MELBOURNE Into the final minute now, as Melksham lines up for what you could probably define as a consolation goal. It's a good kick, and it's through. Geelong: 20.6 (126) Melbourne: 6.10 (46)
