The Geelong Cats have defeated the West Coast Eagles by 20 points at the MCG on Friday night, to book a place in a preliminary final.
Final score

West Coast 10.8.68
Can the minor premiers bounce back or will they go out in straight sets? Find out when the Geelong Cats host the West Coast Eagles at the MCG on Friday night. Join The Roar for coverage of the semi-final, with live scores and a blog of the match from 7:50pm AEST.
Just five games are left to decide the 2019 Premiers, a title only one team can hold.
Geelong had a poor start against a firing Collingwood forward line on Friday night.
The move of Mark Blicavs into the ruck left the defensive line short in the first half, while Esava Ratugolea’s move into the middle in the second half made the forward line a little too predictable.
Despite a late surge from the Cats, the Magpies never really looked like giving up their lead and held on by 10 points.
West Coast had a vastly different evening 24 hours prior, celebrating a huge 55-point victory in their elimination final against Essendon.
It was a dominant display by the reigning premiers, who played their last home game for the season and soared into finals week two with four-goal outings from Josh Kennedy and Jamie Cripps.
The Eagles sweated on the Match Review Officer’s assessment of Nic Naitanui’s retaliation to having his hair pulled, however a $1500 sanction – down to $1000 with an early plea – was deemed sufficient.
Last Friday night’s loss got worse for Geelong, with Mitch Duncan and Gary Rohan both succumbing to knee injuries.
Rhys Stanley has been recalled to the team after his late withdrawal for the “weather conditions”; he faces a huge battle against the duo of Nic Naitanui and Tom Hickey.
Cameron Guthrie also returns after calf soreness ruled him out of the qualifying final.
The build-up to the semi-final has been marred with controversy, as Willie Rioli becomes the subject of an ASADA and AFL investigation.
Rioli has been provisionally suspended as of Wednesday evening, with regards to an ASADA drug test from August 20.
The premiership-winning forward being stood down opens the door for Jack Petruccelle to make his stamp on the AFL Finals series.
The last time these teams met was in round six and it was the Cats who smashed the Eagles by 58-points.
Geelong’s very strong first half of the season has been regularly spoken about and this victory fell during that time; since the bye though, they’ve been up and down and will find things tougher this weekend.
Gary Ablett had a day out with 28 disposals and two goals, and will be looking to return to good form after a quiet performance in last weekend’s lost.
It’s sudden death this weekend, who will take on Richmond in the preliminary final?
Prediction
Geelong have gone loss, win, loss, win since the bye and on that pattern are due for a win this weekend.
If you watched the matches in finals’ week one though, you – and many others – are likely thinking there can be only one outcome: a West Coast victory.
The Eagles are in better ‘form’, but the events of the past 48 hours could spell trouble.
Gut instinct says West Coast will remain alive in the finals series, but have us on the edge of our seats for a thrilling finish.
West Coast by one point.

Agree. Pies will have their hands full this week, with or without Green playing. I suspect he will though. Cats generally match up well against the Tigers. Hawkins out is a big loss but the Eagles did it without Gaff and NicNat last year so no excuses. I'm fully expecting a win from my boys this week. The Pies are the team to beat though. I tipped them last year for the Premiership and I'm tipping them again. Just love their gamestyle. All quality.

Cheers Dr D. The Eagles gave it their best shot. And that's pretty good. Cats play like that against the Tigers, they'll win. Many saying the Giants don't stand a chance. Not me. They appeal the Greene suspension, who knows? They'll have their best and fittest side of the year, barring Coniglio. I have no soft spot for any Melbourne team,or any other team,TBH. I remember 1990 and 1991 too well I appreciate the passion of supporters , except the vacuous vituperates who hang out under Punt Road. Imagine Cats vs a GWS side with nothing to lose?

Perhaps the bizarre circumstances of Rioli's suspension effected West Coast because they came out a little flat. Once they sorted themselves out it was a pretty even game but West Coast can't be conceding so many points to start a match.

Yep. Hope Geelong goes to the T and we get Hawkins off. The Pies should have no problem with the non Victorian at the Gee.

Me too Yattz. Would be an epic grand final 8 years after the last. Only Sidebottom and Pendles remain I think from 2011. Ben Reid if he plays. Hawk and Selwood for you?

Last year we finished top two because we won a game we should have lost to Port, the Guv kicked the winner after the siren. This year we had a 19 point lead against the Pies at 3/4 time and failed to score a goal and lose by a point... that one we should have won. Thats the difference between winning a flag and not winning it. Continues a bizarre run for the Eagles though...win a flag then fail to make the prelim the following year. Who to follow from here on in? I liked the way Bucks and Eddie handled themselves last year after the loss, so I wouldnt begrudge them if they got up this year ;-)

He went nuts last year saying how bad the Pies were and that we had no chance against Richmond then disappeared after the preliminary

So calling another poster "rabid" is just expressing "enthusiasm" and "getting a few laughs". It's a common approach by yourself and PtS toward anyone who disagrees with you! I think you're lacking self awareness. I will consider reporting next time.

R. I could have just said refer to my previous post. Look at the stark assertions you make and the replies. Look how you interact. Then you call others abusive. I have never seen one post from PtS that has been abusive. Certainly don’t agree with everything he says. As I said before, I am new. I just want to express my enthusiasm and get a few laughs. Did you like my alliteration?

You're just another abusive 'serious contributer'. As with yourself, PtS and a few other regular contributers in here, you're intolerant of disssenting opinions and carry on as though you own this forum. Looking forward to more chats before and after this week's game!
