The GWS Giants will have their third different captain for the season as they take on the West Coast Eagles at GIANTS Stadium. Keep an eye on all the action from Sydney with live scores on The Roar from 1:10pm (AEST).

With a fractured shoulder forcing acting captain Toby Greene to join regular skipper Stephen Coniglio (ankle) in the casualty ward, it will be up to Josh Kelly to lead the Giants over the next few weeks. With plenty of speculation linking the smooth-moving midfielder to a move back to Melbourne, Kelly will be keen to show the fans he bleeds orange and charcoal with a big game here.

Greene’s absence, plus a late injury to in-form recruit Jesse Hogan, places plenty of pressure on Jeremy Finlayson to lead the Giants’ attack. Finlayson missed the loss to Richmond through suspension, and will be champing at the bit to make amends.

The Giants were pipped by Richmond in a thriller last week, despite holding a 27-point lead during the third quarter. Their recent form has been impressive, and at home, they will be a real challenge for an Eagles outfit which famously doesn’t travel well.

Adam Simpson’s men have been imperious at home this season, but have a 1-3 record on the road, including a 97-point loss to Geelong just a month ago.

Jeremy McGovern is a big loss with a knee injury: the intercept king is one of the Eagles’ most important players and the marshal of the back six. However, former captain Shannon Hurn returns in his place, for a match in which he will break club great Dean Cox’s games record at the Eagles.

Battling Eagles star ruckman Nic Naitanui looms as a major challenge for the Giants, who have recalled veteran Shane Mumford to assist the inexperienced Matt Flynn in taking on the high-flying Eagle. With Mumford in the team, the Giants have won four and are yet to lose in 2021. Will the trend continue?

what a crap game for the eagles. it looked like we were firing on 2 cylinders all day , lack luster. Ryan was very disappointing, barely touched the ball . We need to do better Eagles , that was a poor performance no excuses

It sounds like you are making excuses I’m afraid. Eagles have had to deal with travel all the years they have been in the comp. Poor to use that as an excuse. Yes GWS are a good team but we have better quality players than they have. Nic Nat is getting away with poor performances some weeks there is no doubt. You must try win every game. That is what’s in my book and I am sticking to it .

You’ve misinterpreted Simmo and Nic. Simmo wants 4 quarter consistency. If they bring their best consistently they will win most games, you can’t win every game, focus on the process, not the outcome. He may be protecting them a tad but we don’t know the promises that they have made behind closed doors. Nic said he plays the role the team asks of him and he listens to his coaches, not pundits - listen to the interview. GWS are a very good team. The game was played at 11am Perth time which is never ideal and a challenge WC has to deal with most weeks they travel. It was neck and neck all day and the Giants won in the end. Certainly lots to work on but not all doom and gloom.

Disappointing result by the Eagles. But will come back and beat Essendon next Saturday. Go the mighty Eagles.

I loathe to be critical of coaches because we have no idea about the ins and outs of their jobs. However I am noticing a worrying form of language from Adam Simpson. In the post match interview he stated “we don’t have to win every week”. I think he might have been trying to say we should not be expected to win every week. He did not use those words though. Surely if your team is not going out there to win every game something is amiss. He is just coming across as too complacent and that’s not a good vibe. A lot of mental preparation is required for these AFL games and your coach at least should be expecting you to be able to win every week or at least having a fair crack at it. We have got the personnel. I mean with names like Kennedy, Ryan, Allen, Darling, Natanui, McGovern, Sheppard, Barrass, Darling, Kelly, Sheed, Gaff, Cripps, and of course our injured and/ or banned trio Schuey, Yeo and Rioli , we should be carving up most of the opposition certainly those teams in the bottom half of the table. We are not doing this. In fact the bottom teams get quite close to us in losing. The results of this weeks games is an example. The Bulldogs took St Kilda to the cleaners and Essendon smashed North. I can’t remember when the Eagles have had a result liked that. I guess it’s Simpson’s style of coaching but I don’t think he is getting the best out the players we have. I mean Natunui a great player but his attitude of I don’t care what criticisms are being made of me is very dismissive. I do not think with his performances that he can command that attitude. He should care about criticism. I am of the thinking that Simpson benefitted a great deal from Sam Mitchell in our 2018 flag. The fall of after this time has indeed been telling. I don’t know the answers, I am not a coach but I do believe that language is of vital importance especially from your coach and Simpson’s language in my humble opinion is just not up to scratch.

After that midfield performance, Eagles fans watching Yeo lay 8 tackles in a WAFL game while playing 60 mins are lying in a fetal position now, rocking, and saying "[Yeo/Schuey] are coming... Krusty is coming"

I think Richmond will probably get up against the Crows at the MCG. Can't see the Crows playing 2 good games in a row. They then have the Bombers at the MCG (very winnable), before the bye and then the Eagles at Optus. Assuming the Eagles get up against the Bombers, and against Carlton (at the MCG - big 'if'), then it's all to play for at Optus post-bye.

If the Eagles can't win a tough one away from home, they won't be going anywhere but 5th to 8th regardless of home form. Quite disappointed - can't point to injuries/umps as GWS were pretty injury-hobbled. Lost this at the selection table (too tall, too many underdone returnees) and at the midfield. You could say we gave GWS way too much prior opportunity to dispose at will.

Pretty sure we're playing the Bombers at Optus Rowdy - i'd take those odds.

Yes, well potentially we all have a Barry Hall (thinking of Andrew Gaff's episode here). Love Toby. Was delighted when Eagles won the 2018 GF.

Can't argue with that. I also have a soft spot for the expansion teams and Sydney (Barry hall aside) and Toby Greene is a gem.

Oh Nics, yes partly. Also popped the Swans up one. I actually don't resent the Eagles at all. The only teams I resent - and admit it is somewhat illogical - are Victorian teams and normally save my repetitive, unimaginative comment whenever a Vic team is beaten by a non-Vic team. However, I do have a soft spot for the Giants fighting for ground in the middle of NRL territory. I note that the Giants as a new team get a lot of spiteful flack on this site especially from Victoria and I always celebrate a win by them (unless they beat the Swans). I think its great (and important) to have two AFL teams in Sydney and the more successful the Giants are the better overall for a national comp (as opposed to a Vic-centric comp). So that's mainly why I was pleased with their win today.

Note to self; put tips in after the teams are announced. I would changes my tip to GWS if I could when I saw the “ins”, but alas I missed one. West Coasts lack of spark away from home should be a huge cause for concern for them. It’s clearly between the ears for them, and without the usual suspects (Kennedy, Darling, McGovern) they would’ve been smashed today. Too many passengers for away games. Their midfield looks light on at the moment too.
