Fresh off a tumultuous week, the Hawthorn Hawks and Alastair Clarkson head to Tasmania looking to keep their strong recent form going against the Fremantle Dockers. Tune into game one of Saturday footy here on The Roar with live scores from 1:45pm (AEST).
After weeks if not months of speculation, a bombshell finally detonated at Hawthorn, with news dropping that favourite son Sam Mitchell will take over from Clarkson as Hawks coach from 2023 onwards. Whether Clarkson chooses to fulfil the final year of his contract at the club he’s coached to four premierships, or departs early to take up the role at Collingwood (for instance), remains to be seen.
Despite the off-field drama, the Hawks have been purring along nicely since their bye. They’ve beaten the finals-bound Sydney and another current top-eight side in GWS, though were soundly beaten by Hawthorn in Shaun Burgoyne’s 400th game last week. A trio of first-year players in Emerson Jeka, Tyler Brockman and top draft pick Denver Grainger-Barras return for the trip to the Apple Isle, in a sign the Hawks’ youth policy will continue.
The Dockers will be cursing the WA government’s hardline COVID-19 stance which forced their home game with Carlton to be played at the MCG – the narrow loss they sustained could be critical in the run to finals. With a 7-8 record, Justin Longmuir’s men are just half a game outside the top eight, but can ill afford to drop any more games against sides lower than them on the ladder.
Captain and superstar Nat Fyfe chalks up his 200th match today, which should give the Dockers some extra motivation. Fyfe has done just about everything that can be done in his first 199, other than what matters most… playing in a premiership.
The Dockers have fared terribly against the Hawks at their Launceston home away from home, winning just one of 12 games there. Can they break the run and keep their season alive?

All best 22. You just don't know who those players are. Hughes has been re-contracted after some great footy. Cox, according to Fyfe, is our best key defender. Hill is 5 times better than Acres and Colyer. Young and Chapman are both already better than Wilson and Aish (you should have watched them when they played). You can't in one sentence write off Hill because of age and in the next, dismiss Chapman abd Young because of youth. You need to watch more closely and not rely on the gossip columnists.

In nine years Taberner has struggled with injury and form. He will have to rely on Treacy, Lobb or Darcy getting injured who are younger and are the future.

Your missing the point there injured yes but not best 22 great depth players.Freddie, Young and Chapman have a played a handful of games all promising yes but not going to make the side stronger.Hughes ordinary probably be delisted. Hamling comes in yes but with Pearce and Logue back there is no room for Cox. Hill has missed nearly 3 years of footy past 30 and finish will retire.

Its better than the other candidates for 7th and 8th.

And Taberner and Sturt.

Cox, Hamling, Hill, Frederick, Young, Hughes, Chapman...yeah, that's full strength.
Jonboy

Yeah that’s 5 quality players out Freo we’re nearly best 22 only one would be Hamling who would make the side better.

Good game freo, about time they did something, tough run home, Swans away, Geelong and Weagles at home, I reckon they'll play off against the Eagles for a top 8 spot. Nice game Lobb.

Well simply put doddorro would trade out our first round pick to get a key forward. It’s far better to take a better pick at the first round and develop towards something, cheaper too
Dave

That’s a silly comment Chuck! How would making the finals this year not be good for Essendons development?? Aiming to play finals every season is the only way for all teams to move forward and develop!
Dave
Roar Rookie
Percentage currently at 97.3 would indicate, no Freo are not that good.

Sad indictment if beating 17th on the ladder is their best win in 3 years
Birdman

Mainly cattle but more being able to get the best out of them consistently. Malthouse has him covered in that department.
Don Freo

It's what you'd expect against Freo's mids.

Good win. Now hopefully Sydney, GWS, Eagles, Richmond and St. Kilda all lose.

It sounds like you’re not endorsing Clarko as the best candidate for the Pies Bird? Has modern footy gone past him or just hasn’t the cattle?
Birdman
Roar Rookie
Maybe, PTS but we were also missing a fair bit of quality today with Wingard, Impey, Day, Sicily and Gunston on the sidelines plus losing Jiath and Scrimshaw in the run. The ongoing issues are down to Clarko including the midfield failing to get its fair share of clearances, the bombing into the forwardline, the endless handballing to feet, ignoring the corridor, the lack of contested marking ability etc. Occasionally they overcome those issues but too often we see them re-surface like today. At least pick 2 looks a certainty and maybe even pick 1 is a chance.

Bird, anything to do with the Clarkson/Mitchell announcement?
