Whether people do or don’t want to play footy is up to them. The only thing we need to do is ensure that there’s no discrimination and that we don’t put up with racism. Beyond that, people will choose to do what they will, so ethnic diversity, or any other kind of diversity, is never guaranteed.

The AFL is becoming more diverse thanks to the rise of players with multicultural backgrounds - but more should be done

Essendon were by far the better team all night, so they ‘deserved’ the win in that sense. Adelaide also deserved a shot to win the game. An umpire being too scared to pay a free knowing it would alter the result is still worth talking about.

Footy Fix: Ferocious, fast and fantastically coached - stuff the controversy, let's give the Dons the respect they deserve

The umpiring was fine throughout the game, but an umpire being to scared to pay a free that he knew would alter the game is still bad umpiring.

Every game for probably the last 15 years I’ve seen similar comments. I don’t think umpire decisions are any worse now than in the past, nor was this game worse than others. Obvious non-call at the end though; Adelaide should feel robbed.

'Very challenging one': AFL back ump's 'correct approach' in last-gasp non-HTB controversy... but admit free was there

Essendon were clealry the better team all night, and I’m sure you’ve got your Essendon blinkers on, but still, it’s not a good sign if you have to twist reality like that to enjoy the win. It was an obvious missed free kick, everyone knows it, even Draper, you got away with it, just accept reality; you can still take the W.

This is definitely a troll comment; you are dreaming Charlie

Exactly, it’s the field umpires call whether or not it’s a mark, and the third umpires call whether it happened before or after crossing the line, but the way they’re doing it now involves the third umpire deciding whether it’s a mark or not. This is incorrect use of the score review, but since they’re doing it that way, there’s no reason it can’t be used to decide marks that aren’t on the line.

Change it or scrap it! The AFL score review system is providing more inconclusiveness than a balanced outcome

As for inconclusive calls, that will always happen, but better technology, so long as it doesn’t make the decision time slower, would be welcome.
As for the flow of the game, a better balance would be to only use the review if the goal umpires soft call is a behind. That’s needed so we don’t get situations like Adelaide’s non-goal last year. When the soft call is a goal, there’s no need for a review, as it can be reviewed anyway as the ball is brought back to the middle.

A problem I have with the reviews now, and it seems to be a new thing, is that that the reviewers are deciding whether or not a mark has been taken, and then putting it up on the screen as ‘MARK’. The review is supposed to be for whether or not it’s a score, not for marks. If the review is now being used to determine marks, then why wasn’t Carlton’s goal against Fremantle reviewed and overturned? This needs to be fixed, as it currently doesn’t make sense.

I feel dumb even dignifying the idea with a response; hopefully the concept of democratising umpire decisions is never mentioned ever again.

Errors happen. Accept it. The game is good how it is, which I say as an aggrieved Freo fan.

Love to whinge about the latest umpiring shocker? That's exactly what the AFL wants from you

The out-of-bounds calls are a beat-up. Only one was clearly out of bounds, the rest were maybe just on the line, so benefit of the doubt should go to the person taking the mark.

Perth has comparable infrastructure to Adelaide. You’d lose the people who drive over (I’m not sure what those numbers are anyway?) but would still get travellers and you’d get crowds from locals. You’d most likely get bigger crowds than you do in Adelaide with bigger capacity grounds. It probably wouldn’t work for Sydney and Queensland though.

If the AFL 'really care' about bringing footy fans together, they'll keep Gather Round in SA

You say that as if the free kicks were gifts. They were for Freo’s great tackling and Carlton errors .ie legitimate goals.

Footy Fix: No, the umpires didn't gift Carlton the game - but Freo sure did

I didn’t notice it live or on replay, did an umpire really say play-on for that mark? If so, that’s a bad error. And I’m glad you brought up that un-paid Treacy mark. Clearly a mark, and that would’ve beeen enough to seal it for Freo. We choked, as we always do against Carlton, and the umpires played their part, which also always seems to happen against Carlton.

They will definitely be up there, if they can keep their list relatively uninjured. Good article, I think it’s too early to start dreaming though, we’ll see how we go against Carlton today. There’s 6/7 other teams who are looking good right now too.

We're only three games in... but is this the year that Freo fans can finally dream of Flagmantle?

Better option would be to send some Victorian minnows back to the VFL, which is seemingly what they prefer anyway. I’d nominate Essendon since they’re useless in the AFL and only care about their VFL glory days.

AFL News: Surprise new team enters race for 20th licence, Eagles close in on priority pick for 'self-inflicted incompetence'

Sorry to add to your concerns Rowdy, but the ‘Big Apple’ has a pretty standard apple selection too.

What to look forward to in the return of Gather Round: Can this year’s Festival of Footy be as successful?

I’m not buying the whole ‘huge success’ narrative. Other than having a ‘good vibe’, as we’re told, I distinctly remember last years rainy games in front of empty stands. Then the AFL started the ‘huge success’ catchphrase by the Saturday morning after 2 or 3 games and after they’d just done a nice deal with the South Australian government.

Let’s keep in mind that the ‘success’ is for the South Australian government, and for the two Adelaide teams who now get to enjoy an extra home game for the next decade, and that less fans get to watch their team play this weekend.

The idea that last years ‘gather round’ was a huge success may or may not be true, but don’t forget that the ‘huge success’ catchphrase was started by the AFL two games in to the gather round, before we knew whether it was a success or not, and after the AFL just did a deal with the South Australian government. I was amazed at how quick people were to parrot it while watching rainy games in front of empty stands.

Even if we all agree it was a success, that says nothing as to whether it would also be a success in Perth, Sydney or Queenland.

Essentially, we now have South Australian teams getting an extra home game, Queensland and Sydney teams getting an extra bye, Victorian teams getting to play 75% of games at home, and Western Australian teams getting….

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions, Gather Round: Footy heads to Adelaide - but who will leave victorious?

Owen Three

Are the Pies still hungry? Owen jokes aside, Collingwood are in serious trouble

That would be much worse. If the posts are play on, it will significantly alter the game, and if ‘touched’ is still a goal, would ‘punched’ be a goal? All of a sudden the umpire now has to decide whether there is sufficient contact on the ball (how would you measure that?) or the ball just crossing the line counts a goal; welcome puching it over the line and try’s. This is why you gotta be careful what you wish for with rule changes, in trying to make things simpler it just becomes much more complicated.

Six Points: Meet the AFL's dumbest team, and the most ridiculous ban in MRO history

Being the better team and having a better recovery period are both advantages, but neither, nor both, guarantee a win. Home ground is definitely an advantage too, but I’m looking forward to Freo and Carlton in Adelaide this year. They always beat us in Perth, so I’m hoping the neutral ground will level it out.

'Dripping in inequality and stupidity': Footy is back... and so is AFL interference

Nevertheless, all valid points.

“Meet the AFL’s dumbest team” is a funny headline on the day Tasmania’s team is announced.

Glad to see some optimism from Eagles fans, but it’s not looking good. They looked well below average against the Dockers tonight, and added some injuries to the tally. I agree with the author here; it’s going to be another few years of pain.

'Overblown hysteria': Harley Reid is a gun, but he won't stop the Eagles finishing last again

The purple is great, and so are the old-school colours. It’s also a wealthy and popular club. The anchor is gone, but even if it weren’t, what a childish tooth-fairy theory. Saints have won 0 AFL premierships by the way. The Blues have a losing streak as long as Freo’s; hey, maybe they lose because they’re the Blues and that gives them ‘the blues’?

Will Dockers come to rue lack of trade activity?
