In the final game of round five, the Hawthorn Hawks will host the Geelong Cats in their traditional Easter Monday clash at the MCG. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 3:20pm AEST.

An injury-hit Hawthorn suffered a narrow five-point loss to St Kilda last Sunday; the Saints coming hard in the third term and finishing it off in the fourth to overcome the Hawks.

Hawthorn failed to kick a major in the final term, just a Jack Gunston behind was added to the scoreboard in a tense final term.

Geelong suffered their first loss for the season last weekend, falling to the GWS Giants by four-points despite the Giants losing co-captain Callan Ward early to an ACL.

At home, the Cats, like the Hawks, dropped a four-goal third quarter lead to be overrun in the final term.

Geelong received some good news from the MRO though, with Patrick Dangerfield free to play in this big clash after an off-the-ball swing at Matt de Boer.

At team selection, Hawthorn made three changes to their side for Monday’s match.

Jonathon Ceglar and David Mirra have been dropped, while James Frawley will miss with a hamstring injury sustained against the Saints in round four.

Jaeger O’Meara is back in the side after his late withdrawal for a corked hip last weekend, and Kaiden Brand and Mitchell Lewis have been rewarded for good form in the VFL.

Geelong have made just one change: Charlie Constable will miss this clash, rested in his first AFL season.

Cameron Guthrie returns to the side for his first game this year; a calf injury stalled the start of his season, but a strong showing in the VFL last weekend earned an instant call up to the senior side.

Round 21, 2018 was the last time these two teams played, Hawthorn ran out 11-point winners on that occasion.

These Easter Monday clashes have traditionally been close, high-scoring affairs and AFL fans will be hoping this one is no different.

Chad Wingard will play his 150th AFL game.

Prediction
Geelong, keen to bounce back after last weekend’s poor second-half, will find a way to win against the Hawks. A bit of extra class and some good kids in their line-up, they have a nice balance to beat the Hawks.

Geelong by 22 points.

Disappointed that Hawthorn did not win. We would have had three-quarters of the ladder on 12 points. So much for the old adage that the ladder has sorted itself out by round 6. Mind you, I might have to eat my words if the Saints end up on top and Freo in the four.

You’re still the wrong side of the ledger and we lead you 3-2 recently . You can always hope. The Eagles haven’t won at Skilled /Simonds/ GMHBA Stadium /Kardinia Park since 2006…. Seriously weird round. Three games by ten goals, three goals by seven goals, three games by four goals. I’m happy with four.

The Geelong Cats have defeated the Hawthorn Hawks by 23-points at the MCG. Lacking experienced personnel, the Hawks were running on youth early, putting majors on the board and leading with just a couple minutes remaining in the first. Two late marks converted goals by Gary Rohan put the Cats in front by one at the first change though. Geelong continued their run in the second term, putting on six goals to the Hawks’ three and taking a 17-point lead into the main break. The Hawks seemed to have addressed some issues at the main break, but the Cats’ were beginning to win the footy at the contest and furthered their lead by two goals, to be up by an even 30-point margin at the end of the third. Geelong kicked the first – thanks to a Patrick Dangerfield free kick – in the fourth quarter, then it was the Hawks who took control. They fought back in the final term, kicking a fourth goal to get back within two would have made a tense final few minutes, but it wasn’t to be for the Hawks. Geelong ran out 23-point winners and returned to the top of the ladder. Hawthorn failed to lower their eyes going inside 50, the smalls just couldn’t collect and convert, and their defence was tested by Geelong. Geelong, with a stronger list on paper, looked slow early, but found their mojo late in the first. They had a bit more class going forward and while their defence wasn’t perfect, it was another strong performance by the back six. Ricky Henderson (33 disposals, 2 goals) was brilliant for the Hawks, while Ben McEvoy smashed the ruck contest with 37 hit-outs and pressed forward for two goals. Jaeger O’Meara (26 disposals, 1 goal) and James Worpel (24 disposals, 1 goal) were good at ground level. For Geelong, the usual suspects around the contest in Tim Kelly (29 disposals, 2 goals), Joel Selwood (32 disposals) and Patrick Dangerfield (28 disposals, 2 goals) were busy. Gary Rohan (4 goals) and Gary Ablett (3 goals, 23 disposals) starred up forward for the Cats, the Hawthorn defenders were under pressure whenever the football came inside 50. Ben Stratton was replaced in the selected side by David Mirra, who also went down to the rooms himself with a knee injury in the third term but returned to the field after treatment. Ben McEvoy finished the game on the bench, unclear what for, a possible hip injury was discussed after the game by media. Brandon Parfitt was done at half time for the Cats with a left quad issue, they will await scans in the lead up to their clash with the reigning premiers. Next up for Hawthorn is a trip to Tasmania to host Carlton on Sunday afternoon, while Geelong take on the West Coast Eagles at GMHBA in a twilight Sunday timeslot. Final Score Hawthorn 13.12.90 Geelong 17.11.113

Nah I reckon the Blues clenched their buttocks when the Eagles came in for Kennedy. They knew what they might be losing in that trade.

They got a Brownlow medalist in that deal, reckon it worked out well for both clubs.

I agree the result should have taken care of itself given the Hawks injuries but the umps made key decisions to swing momentum just as we were getting back into.

Geelong sit on top of the AFL ladder at the conclusion of round five; Hawthorn came hard in the last, but it was too late of a charge, with a Hawkins goal sealing the win in the final minutes. Hawthorn battled hard for a team who have been severely hit by injuries to start this year. Ricky Henderson was brilliant, but unfortunately going forward the Hawks just couldn't bring the ball to ground, nor worked hard enough at ground level to scrap some goals.
