Match result:

The Port Adelaide Power have defeated the Carlton Blues by 16 points at Adelaide Oval to add a second victory to their season tally.

Carlton began well and looked up for the contest in the first quarter; holding a six-point lead at the first change.

It was a high scoring opening term with nine goals kicked and front pressure from the Blues proved the slight difference.

Port responded in the second term with four unanswered goals to take a 53-34 lead into the long break and looked likely winners.

The heavens opened at the break and the change in conditions gave the Blues something to believe in, and they played expert wet weather defence in the third term; restricting the Power to a lone goal and adding four of their own.

It translated into a three-point lead at the final change and with the Blues looking the better side in the wet, Carlton fans could smell an upset victory.

The final term began with a quick goal to Brad Ebert and the Power were able to stretch their lead to a comfortable and manageable size before the Blues took a few risks and pulled back the scoreline with a late goal.

In the end Carlton will walk away disappointed yet for the second week running they have played competitively and passionately against good opposition.

There are positive signs for the future as the young Blues continue to grow into their skins.

Port will be pleased but know that they let themselves down in the third quarter with an aggression towards possession that failed to match that of their opponents.

Sam Powell-Pepper, Ebert and Travis Boak were influential for the Power and Jacob Weitering, Patrick Cripps and Liam Jones were their usual courageous selves against a free running and dangerous Port Adelaide side.

Most alarming for the Blues was the injury to Charlie Curnow who went down with a knee problem early on.

Much will be made of the injury in the media in the coming days and all football fans will hope that the talented forward is cleared of major damage.

Final score
Port Adelaide Power 13.10.88
Carlton Blues 11.6.72

Match preview:

The Port Adelaide Power and Carlton Blues face off at Adelaide Oval in Round 2 AFL action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:10pm (AEDT).

After a competitive performance against the Tigers in the season opener, Carlton will look to continue to show the AFL world that things are destined to be different for them in 2019.

With another year in the legs of the quality youth they have drafted and the new additions of Nic Newman and Mitch McGovern, the Blues look more competitive than they have for some time.

Charlie Curnow and Partick Crips will continue to bear the weight of public expectation yet with a more experienced and skilled cast around them, Brendon Bolton may finally have the Blues capable of a season where 7-8 victories is a reasonable expectation.

The Power were irrepressible against the Demons at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last weekend after starting poorly and running all over one of the flag favourites in the second half.

Jack Watts was a revelation for Port Adelaide in the win and with Robbie Gray, Sam Powell-Pepper, Travis Boak and Tom Rockliff looking in pristine condition and form, Port look an improved side.

Ken Hinkley spruiked the win as one of the greatest in the club’s history after his youngsters did the job against the Demons.

Their role will be tested in what is a long and grinding season yet the sheer quality across the park that the Power possess will make their development into top notch, first team AFL footballers just that little bit easier.

Prediction
The bookies suggest this will be a walk in the park for the Power. I’m struggling to see that logic after the impressive play of Carlton in Round 1.

The Power should get the win at home yet I wouldn’t be surprised if Carlton led at some stage. Experience will probably tell late in the match yet the more football the Carlton boys get under their belts makes that perceived gap narrower and narrower.

Look for another bold performance from Carlton.

Port Adelaide by three goals.

Col - I thought Polson was good last night. Watching live I noticed how much ground he covers to put on fwd pressure. Kennedy should come in for Fasolo. I’d think Levi comes in for Charlie. I also like Garlett down back - although he still needs to improve his decision making - attempted soccer off ground in last qtr was dumb.

Kane, he is still one of our better players. Who would you replace him with? Garlett had 13 disposals and 5 clangers yet you rate him as one of our best. As for Charlie he has bone bruising and will miss 2 – 3 weeks.

Curnow took a mark early that wasn’t paid. Got a high clip on another mark on the lead. One goal assist and involved in another. Timing was off on one leap. He didn’t star but was in the game. Murphy didn’t have a good game but was very good last week. I thought it was impressive he came back on as live it was a big hit. Murphy and Thomas experience is critical over the next couple of years as the young midfield will need the direction. Also they will keep getting 20+ disposals whereas the youngsters will be up and down.

I'd give Pat Kerr a go if Charlie doesn't come up. Garlett was one of our better players last night but has a lot to improve on to still be on the list next year. I'm not hating on Murph because he has been a fantastic and loyal servant for a long time but there comes a time in everyone's career where you lose the strengths that got you to where you are but I believe his best and worth to the team on the ground has gone past him. I'm happy to be proven wrong

Samo, Weiters, Dow, McKay and Phillips were great for us and Cripps was his normal self but blokes need to step up to help him out. Charlie doesn't seem to be fighting hard enough once the ball hits the ground compared to last year. We sorely missed Cunningham. Polson and Fasolo need extended runs in the 2's to earn their spots and I'd make Kreuzer earn his spot by playing him in the 2's as well. We've had too many player's in the past being gifted games because of no depth but now that we're starting to build a bit of depth a spot has to be EARNT if we're to get anywhere as a club.

If the Swans play like they hav the past two weeks and we play like we have the past two weeks we will win. I think Fasolo for Kennedy for sure, Polson wasn't too bad yesterday and has speed which we need, Garlett I am not convinced about but not certain we have a better replacement until Marchbank is fit. If Charli doesn't come up I would go with Jack.

Agree Macca. I don’t understand all the hate on Murphy. He is playing a new role and still picking up plenty of the ball. Sure he turned a few over last night but the weather conditions weren’t great. His disposal efficiency was poor at 57.7% but we only had 4 players who went at 70% or better, Port had 9. We had 8 players who’s efficiency was worse than Murphy’s. Next week I think we are a chance against the Swans if we can keep a chain on Buddy. Hopefully Charlie will be OK and the changes I would make would be Garlett, Fasolo and Polson out for Kennedy, O’Brien and JSOS.

Kane – I said Murphy had a bad game yesterday (perhaps being knocked into next week had something to do with it), the point was he was in our best just the week before, let’s not over react to one game. As for Charlie not sure how you say he was terrible in the less than 1 quarter he played, took a good contested mark that wasn’t paid for no apparent reason, took another that set Setterfield up for a goal, had a scoring shot and created space for those around him, but hey why not crucify him. Did you see anything you liked,Weitering, SPS, McKay, Dow?

Number of possessions don't mean anything Macca if u turn the ball over all the time, Murphy looked like he was playing his first game last night fumbling all the time and panicking. Charlie was terrible last week and last night until injured but if you and the club are happy with the way these 2 are playing then it explains why we've been down for so long.

Yeah Kane Charlie didn't have a touch after quarter time, terrible. As for Murphy, last week he had 29 touches, 1 goal, 5 inside 50's and just 1 clanger but sure after this week's bad game (26 touches, 2 inside 50's and 7 clangers) we should dump him from a team lacking in players with more than 50 games to their name.

Charlie Curnow has a lot of work to do to live up to his reputation. If he fires consistently then we will cause some headaches to opposition sides. We should have made the hard call on Murphy last year as well, he was terrible today

Went to the game and thought Weitering was sensational. Port had huge inside 50 numbers but not very clean. McGovern is a great addition. Samo was really impressive and McKay contested marking is fantastic. We just didn’t win enough contested ball and Port’s outside run overwhelmed us in the end. Big chance next week.

Blues are going to cause some upsets this year if they play like today. Just a little more polish and could have won this.
