It’s almost last-chance saloon time for Port Adelaide as they host a buoyant Sydney fresh off their bye needing a win to keep their finals hopes alive. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 1:45pm (AEST).
After recovering from a 0-5 start to their season that saw many question the future of Ken Hinkley at the helm of the Power, things have somewhat flatlined over the last few weeks, with losses to Richmond and Geelong adding real perspective to where the team is actually at.
Currently three wins outside the eight, today is simply a must-win for Port; but it won’t be easy, with their opposition continuing to prove itself as a worthy competitor on a week-to-week basis.
There have been some poor moments for the Swans across the current season, and certainly a series of slow starts to matches; yet not once have they been belted, and wins against Melbourne and Richmond in recent weeks have only confirmed a pre-season belief that Sydney are set to contend for the top four in 2022.
Team news sees the Power lose Robbie Gray and Travis Boak to injury and health and safety protocols respectively, whilst they also welcome back Mitch Georgiades into a squad that desperately needs his skill and class in the front half.
Sydney’s squad is a settled one, with the big inclusion of Lance Franklin certain to fuel many headlines and the only significant change to the squad that did the job against the Demons a fortnight ago.
The desperation of Port and Sydney’s need for a win to keep them in the hunt for a top-four spot could see something special play out at Adelaide Oval this afternoon. Even if Port do manage to jump the Swans early, as many have done before them, John Longmire’s team will be coming home strongly and with a wave of fitness and determination that appears to be catching many teams by surprise late in matches.
Prediction
Whilst many still believe that Port Adelaide are in fact a good team and one destined to find their way towards the fringes of the eight by season’s end, picking them in this match would be disrespectful to the Swans. They’re a team rediscovering its form after a mid-season slump where Brisbane, Carlton and Gold Coast exposed a few weaknesses.
Ever since, it has been brilliant from the Swans and they should have the depth across the park to account for the Power today.
Sydney by 19 points.

Oh well that’s been our curse since 16 but once we get our belief on a roll watch out. Bruce & Hunter played reserves & Smith back in 3 weeks. English is improving by the week. Libba is a gun & is peaking hopefully he can drag the team with him.

It was an excellent win Chan and they show they can kick a winning score. Trouble is their opponent kicked over 100 points too. They struggle to stop other Teams scoring and against the top won't be able to score so freely. Lost a couple of soldiers to injury yesterday too.

Also, 6 of the last 8 for Port, pity about the start. Talks of rebuild are stupid, it's clear the cattle is there

This comp is crazy, to have a team like Port in 12th just shows how even this comp is. Best win of the season, clearly We've had a crazy hard draw, with lower teams exploding we seem to be playing a good footy side every week. No Boak and Gray, it worked, hate to say it

Yeah, haven’t looked back further. I know we played and lost to Port after the bye last year. Hopefully just an aberration but certainly a pattern to go missing for a quarter or two.

Yet again the Swans have an absolute shocker of a quarter. The coaches must be tearing their hair out trying to work out how to get the players switched on for the whole game. And I hope Hickey is ready to come back into the team next week after Ladhams’ brain explosion. Dumbest act on a football field all season.

Good win, Joel, didn't you think. Withstood challenges, kicked well, Butters was great.

Don if l had a crystal ball it would be easier but in all honesty the dogs have been poor this year & can’t quite play games on our terms our disposal to our leading forwards or lack of has been excruciatingly painful to watch.

So...once...don't know why I was surprised we played badly...

Losing to both Collingwood and Richmond just cost Carlton a buffer between those 7 and below. Not as safe with a tough run home. Getting guys back is going to be important especially Wietering and Pitonett.

It will be interesting when Carlton play St Kilda in a few weeks. If Carlton win that, they may qualify for a home final.

Today was a day for Port, with Sydney never really in the game barring a quick start that saw them establish an early lead. The Power's season remains alive and the Swans will rue the wasting of a chance to potentially move inside the top four. Port Adelaide……………12..10…82 Sydney Swans..…………8..11…59

It’s what I like about GWS. Get players back…it’s amazing to some that that can improve a side. You should finish ahead of Port. They lose the next 4.
