Thursday night football is set to be a blockbuster as the Richmond Tigers and West Coast Eagles lock horns at Metricon Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores from 7:10pm (AEST).

Richmond, currently fifth on the ladder, are in good form – but they’ll someone above them to trip up if they’re to finish inside the top four. They laboured in a 12-point win over Essendon last week, but have four wins from their past five and will back themselves to do damage once the finals roll around.

West Coast are the hottest team in the competition, riding an eight-game winning streak that began at the start of July. After their shocking start, the Eagles are now entrenched in the top four and will also back themselves to have a good finals campaign – although a loss here puts them behind the eight-ball for a double chance.

The Tigers got over the line by six points in an absolute classic the last time these sides met. They also enjoy a stellar record at Metricon Stadium, having won on their last six visits. The Eagles, on the other hand, had a four-game winless run at the venue until they got up in Round 5 this year.

Great win by Richmond. West Coast lose away from home and supporters blame the umpires. Pretty standard stuff.

Not sure too many people have west coast in the same convo as Geelong and Richmond or Brissy and Port for that matter. West Coast are 2-4 away from home so unless finals are played in Perth they won’t be close to it

We don't even have a word for legitimate "Staging" . The code of gamesmanship (unspoken but definitely there) among players allows for some exaggeration short of actual staging but it is so tacit we don't even have a word for it. So it all gets lumped in as "Staging" when we are actually talking bout two different things. One can be used to trick your opponent when he is impeding your ball play so that the umpire can see what he's up to. The other is pure invention. It all is under the banner of intention of the player. The more we speak about this bluffing and read the players intentions the smarter we all get. Pinning a ball to a player on the ground and making "umpire eyes" at the governing official is kind of a funny look but it's common in the game. I don't think it will be around for much longer but I can't say why.

Lighten up. Even Jack would have a smile if you suggested he was a staging superstar. I am not sure about the slur? If it was the Mary/ Marnie author comment, I thought I was being nice.

Subtle lean forward but could not even class it as a stage. What I am saying is all this commotion can prejudice the umps.

I think Grimes was found guilty and fined on both occasions, but the most recent one was inexplicably overturned (without explanation - just another case of bizarre inconsistencies between the MRP and Tribunal this year - but that's another story).

very different scenarios to afl with the examples u cite brendon, in those other sports they dont have to front up for 26 odd weeks in a row (counting finals), difficult to believe there is not a significant effect with the shorter breaks, but i guess its the same for every side so they just have to suck it up, the best team will still win it

agree jack doesnt mind staging, but in the incident cited i think he was just laying there minding his own business when the ump plucked a free for him out of nowhere

Being serious. Haven't heard anyone else suggest he staged. Granted it was a soft free kick. Your personal slur must mean I'm not in your' I wish everyone could just get along' bubble. You, too, lack objectivity at times but that's okay. Guess I'm just a misunderstood coconut.

sure grimes staged in that final v brissy but if hipwood didnt come in & bump him after cameron had got the free then the opportunity to reverse it wasnt there, these blokes are playing for serious stakes, if the opportunity to advantage your team arises, theyre gonna take it. so in my view it was stupid play by hipwood that created the situation. with your call for a suspension for staging u would have a situation where a judgement call has to be made on whether the offender was just trying to let the ump know he was being infringed upon or they are straight out staging. so if u feel contact in your back & exaggerate it what would that be ? do we need a pressure sensor on the blokes back to determine how hard the push was ? ok my example is a bit stupid but my point is u are now creating another grey area in a game that is full of them, to me it would just be something else thats gunna create problems with getting consistent outcomes, the game is complicated enough, do we need to add to it ?

look it was soft but if u grab a bloke to stop him leading then the free is there, to me me the call was correct

Yeah, I take your point. Yet in both cases they were found not guilty of staging so it's really the free kicks you should have issue with which is a whole different argument.

Don’t disagree but the one thing I would like is for the umpires to stop calling nebulous game changers. Just to save a barrage, I will take the example of the WC free, 5 metres out for a nothing incident before the ball is even kicked into the forward line.

Well I'm staggered to say the least. He didn't even appeal for a free kick. I agree it was a gift but staging? I can see you've got an 'attitude', Grimes and Vlaustin were cleared of staging as I expected. Seems you don't accept the verdict, no need to be snitchy about it. Or am I excluded from your 'I just hope we can all get along' philosophy. You're not always overtly objective yourself. WC won a flag 2 years ago yet you continue the 'flat track bullies' insults, despite them winning a GF on the road at the G. People in glass houses, hey?

is the staging really a new thing ? i reckon its been going on forever (check out neville crow v john nichols ’67 semi, crowe missed a premiership over that). there are so many flog footy media commentators now all needing to put something out to justify their existence & keyboard warriors on various forums (yeah ive been guilty at times) all jumping on the latest bandwagon & stuff gets blown way out of proportion. yeah the umpiring is frustrating at times but these foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists w#&ki*g on about umps trying to influence results are deluded to put it mildly. reckon the umps were very good last night, its gotta be an incredibly difficult game to adjudicate & these arm chair critics with their multiple angle slo mo views analysing every decision & then giving their verdict after having mulled it over for an unlimited time (unlike the umps who have to call it there & then) are beyond a joke. at least we are not agonizing over the dreadful state of the game any more, guess the angsty types need something else to freak about ……….some great matches to enjoy atm …… rant over

But in both casrs cited in my comment above, Grimes received a free kick, denying a certain goal, and the ball zinged down the other end for a goal to Tiges. Two goal turnarounds. So these massive rewards are likely to encourage him (and others) to keep doing it.

Fair enough. Imo, the Eagles performed better this time round... and they have had an unsettled last couple of days having to relocate for a second time, and faced a very good Richmond performance. This can be a good loss for them... time will tell. I am hoping Freo can cause grief for other teams in hub 2.0 :stoked:

Pablo, anybody else would think that you are being sarcastic. But knowing you, you are being serious. Jack is a staging superstar. Not the only one, seems to be an occupational hazard for ageing players.
