Saturday night footy takes us to Melbourne, as a fledgling St Kilda host a similarly fledging West Coast at Marvel Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:25pm (AEST).
Yes, yes. We know there is that other big Showdown on tonight. This won’t be the most publicised game, but hear me out – sometimes it is the under the radar games that are the better ones.
In this case, we’ll be watching a potentially over-performing St Kilda tackle a big challenge in what is an under-performing West Coast side. St Kilda’s first few weeks were very good, but they’ve faltered in successive weeks against Adelaide and GWS.
West Coast have looked rather flat for the opening month and a half of the season, but they’ll at least be heading into tonight’s clash with a win against Gold Coast under their belt (this coming after a thrashing at the hands of Geelong, though). So, neither team appear to be in the best form at the moment.
St Kilda’s recent fortnight will be a genuine worry to them; there’s no point winning if they’re not winning against the top teams.
They’ll be encouraged, however, by the fact that they were stoically not blown away by either the Cats or Giants, and their best footy is rather good – they just need to be consistent enough to tackle what will be a strong challenge.
West Coast themselves would be worried about their struggles against Gold Coast, which saw them almost relinquish a dominant lead as the Suns booted five straight goals against the premiers.
There’s a number of changes to both sides tonight. St Kilda have made a trio of swaps, with Irishman Darragh Joyce, youngster Hunter Clark and Johnathan Clarke all omitted from the side.
Nathan Brown, Luke Dunstan and Ed Phillips all return to the twenty-two – a side that is already bereft of names like Jack Steven, Jack Lonie, Jarryd Geary and Dylan Roberton.
The reigning premiers have made one change to their line-up this evening. Veteran Chris Masten has been omitted, replaced by Jake Waterman.
Prediction
St Kilda are missing a few of their best, whilst the Eagles have looked lethargic for much of the season so far. On most days, you’ll tips the Eagles purely because they are the better football team. That’s what I’m going to do, but I do honestly feel a little bit of upset potential in this one.
Nevertheless, the smart tip here in the premiers. Expect them to run away with it in the final term or thereabouts.
West Coast by 29 points.

If the Eagles dropped every player that the public called for, they wouldn't have a team, or it'd be a total mish-mash and worse than the team they replaced. They are the hunted now and Port provided the blueprint to beat them. there's no point making comparisons to 2018 season, the game has changed, teams have adapted and evolved, the competition has moved on. The Eagles are adapting and changing on the run to new tactics being used against them. Some key players have been out of form or successfully shut down each game, but they're working their way through it. This was scrappy win, but the Eagles always looked in control and could've blown the Saints out of the park. The Saints look great BTW! Credit to them. Rioli back soon will help big time and NN is the sweet wrecking ball on top! They should get the chokkies against Demons then be up for a huge test against the Crows.

A Good win by the mighty Eagles last night. Darling and Kennedy not yet in form but hopefully against Melbourne on Friday Night they will come back in form and give the mighty Eagles a boost in percentage. Looking forward to Riolo being back this week or next, It will help the forward line more.

Good win by West Coast. Saints through the kitchen sink at the Eagles and we came away with a win. Big Josh Kennedy gets crunched by two or three opponents every time the ball goes near him he must be bloody sore the next day. Ive said it before and ill say it again, Jettas second efforts are abysmal, yes he has a great kick on him but that's where it ends he has nothing else to offer. Flying Ryan never stopped trying.

Thanks for the blog, AD. My two cents: Too many passengers on the Eagles list ATM. Schofield, Cole, Jetta & Darling could all use a stint in the WAFL. Venables and Hutchings have lifted from poor to average, let's hope they continue to improve. Kennedy still has a lot of room to improve, as do quite a few Eagles. A serviceable result (good for an away game), but quite some way from looking like Premiership contenders. Here's hoping they continue to improve & gel.

Do we a quota on the minimum number of female umpires that are required to officiate each game yet? Can’t be far away!

Nah,don't do that. Sometimes it's good to just shut off the endless cheerleading by Brayshaw and take the game in comment by comment. Couldn't follow the blog tonight AD but your work is appreciated. I hope the Dockers serve it up to the Tigers tomorrow

I joined this roar thinking footy fans would be having good friendly banter on here but it seems that only 2 people Birdman and Adelaide Docker seem to hold the floor here shame because it could be a really good site . I suppose I shall be like the others before me and give it a wide berth.

Good game, that one. St Kilda will be disappointed but pleased nevertheless, given their competitiveness. West Coast will very happy, though. A strong enough victory, but not without a few nervy moments. Thank you for joining me on this Saturday night. I'm off now, but I'll be back for Hawthorn taking on GWS at the home of footy tomorrow, but until then, have a great Saturday night. St Kilda: 10.10 (70) West Coast Eagles: 12.15 (88)

Not convincing, but it is a WCE win in Melbourne.

So 2 wins a row, but not overly convincing. Dees at home next, that will be a good one.
