Two old rivals lock horns in the Friday night lights when the Sydney Swans host the struggling Hawthorn Hawks. Follow along from the SCG right here on The Roar with live scores from 7:50pm (AEST).

Much has changed since these two sides traded premierships in the 2012 and 2014 grand finals, but only one of them looks set to return to those lofty heights anytime soon.

Fuelled by an exciting core of youngsters, the Swans have taken 2021 by storm to rank as one of the year’s big improvers. Sixth on the ladder with an 8-4 record, the top four is well within reach: but equally, they might be only one form slump away from having their top-eight position come under threat.

It took some inaccurate kicking late from opponents St Kilda for the Swans to escape with a 9-point win in Round 12; no doubt the home fans will hope for a less stressful time at the footy against the Hawks.

Alastair Clarkson has achieved just about anything in his time as Hawthorn coach; but it seems not even he can do anything about the Hawks’ slide to near the foot of the ladder. Years of success have left the cupboard bare for young talent, and with Brownlow Medallist Tom Mitchell rumoured to be exploring options elsewhere, things could be about to get worse before they get better.

The Hawks have blooded plenty of youth in recent weeks, with encouraging signs from a few. Key forward Jacob Koschitzke has missed just one game for the season, while ruckman Ned Reeves has shown he could be the long-term replacement for captain Ben McEvoy they have been looking for.

The brown and gold will welcome another debutant this week, with mid-season draftee Jai Newcombe to make an immediate foray into the senior side following weeks of domination in the VFL. Can the ‘newcomer’ inspire the Hawks to an upset win on the road?

Sydney actually took more marks than Hawthorn and had 20 more uncontested possessions. And there was effort there - 81 tackles which is quite a lot, though Hawthorn did win contested possessions. But the Swans suffered a complete lack of coherence, decisiveness and clean-ness with ball handling. Time and time again embryonic attacks broke down with a fumble or dodgy hand-pass. 60 clangers to Hawthorn’s 32. If you make double the stuff-ups of your opponent you’ll lose. 26:10 free count and repeated frees missed for Sydney didn’t help. Razor Ray should never be given a senior AFL game. It’s beyond his skill level. But even if the free count had been reversed I don’t believe Sydney could have or should have won. Just watching the game without knowing ladder positions you’d have thought it was Hawthorn at 6 and Sydney second bottom.

You’re a good sport, Angela. Watch the speed on that broomstick. Double demerits this long weekend.

The Swans looked flat and looked like a bottom 8 side. The hawks took it up too them but are still way off the pace, although they had a couple of young guns that looked like they had good potential.

The closest of those 4 games will be this week. GC is getting the tribe together: Rowell, Anderson, Rankine, King... These two teams, with all the great kids that have been blooded will provide the next decade of top level clashes at the top of the table. I'm just looking forward to the two classy new boys, Walker and Western. Sadly, I'll be working so I'll be straight on the replay when I get home.

Swans were out played and out coached. Teams that have had a bye should play other teams that have had a bye. Swans coming off two six day breaks playing a team after a two week break. Ridiculous. Free kicks 26 to 10. Many obvious ones not paid. Like the 2016 Grand Final probably worth 3 to 4 goals which was game changing in 2016 but not last night. Well played Hawks. F U AFL

Lovely comment I was at the match but still managed to guide my broomstick home safely Swans were deplorable last night. I realise I've been missed owing to going on strike over the relentless jarring flashing banner ads, however, sure you'll be happy to know I'm back owing to my best friend finding me a new search engine so I am now utterly ad-free on the Roar. Beats me why anyone pays good money for ads that can be bypassed, ignored or have the opposed effect of what they're trying to achieve. Off to the SSO to calm my fevered brow. Hawks played well, must admit I did have a feeling before that match. Never underestimate Clarkson.

A "colourful character" is the term I believe. Despite his outrageous self promotion, gaudy taste, and a life lived like an episode of Days of Our Lives, he put the Swans firmly on the map in Sydney. They would not be an established part of the sporting landscape here without the profile he gave them in the early years.

That’s a good way of putting it, that’s particularly noticeable in their refusal to pay a lot of holding the ball free kicks over the course of this seaskn

But some of that top 8 are only in the top 8 because they haven't played all of the bottom 8.

I'm never surprised when my predictions manifest. I did, however, factor this in as one of their 3 remaining wins this season.

I did point that out 2 days ago. Freo and GWS to replace Sydney and Richmond.

The Swans let the Hawks take too many uncontested marks. They weren't as fierce at the ball as the Hawks and their tackles didn't seem to stick as well. Maybe it's the players' young bodies, but a lot of those recent draft picks are currently injured or are only playing well enough to be picked in the VFL.
