The West Coast Eagles and the Melbourne Demons face off at Optus Stadium in the second of the AFL Preliminary Finals. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:20pm (AEST).

The stories surrounding the second grand final dress rehearsal are varied, emotional and inspiring.

After something of an interrupted season where the Eagles have had key players either cashiered for the year or experiencing significant weeks on the sidelines, coach Adam Simpson has done a brilliant job to have them just two hours away from the big dance.

The Melbourne Football Club have lived the dream, after a rebuild that was initiated by the appointment of Paul Roos six year ago, it has slowly but surely borne fruit under the guidance of new man Simon Goodwin.

It is the fairy tale of the competition, which is saying something considering the amazing injury riddled run of the Magpies.

There are three significant factors at play today and each will feature in determining which of these two clubs will have the resilience and fortitude to prevail.

The much talked about Melbourne mids mean everything to the Dees. They are frantic, intense and elite in their work.

If West Coast lose control of the centre of the ground, as others have done, the Demons can score substantially.

Secondly, the West Coast big men hold a significant power over this match. Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy will pose an immense threat to the Demons defence; a defence that earlier in the season proved too easy to score against for Goodwin’s liking.

Defensively too, West Coast will be intimidating at the back and the more nimble and athletic Melbourne forward half will need to avoid becoming engaged in one on one marking contests from innefective high balls into the area.

Melbourne must bring the ball to ground and restrict West Coast’s marks in the defensive half, from there, the Dees could prove too skilful and agile at ground level.

The third factor looming as decisive is the ‘noise of affirmation’ created by the West Coast fans. From all reports, this is the noisiest sporting stadium in the country at present and the free kick data is inrefutable when it comes to the effect it has on umpires.

Let’s hope that with the cream of the crop officiating this match, the noise might play less of a role than it has in the past.

This could be a match for ages. The young Dees, seemingly riding a wave of energy created by much of the AFL community and the tough and consistent West Coast, looking for a return to the glory days of the 1990s.

One of them will play Collingwood in the grand final. It should be a hell of a lot of fun finding out which.

Prediction
Both teams could win this contest quite easily. Melbourne could run the Eagles off the park, as they have done to many other teams this year.

Alternatively, Kennedy and Darling could kick ten between them and the Demon defenders might be caught out by one of the most potent attacking duos in the league.

I’ll go with the former and the Demons to win by 33 points.

Couldn't watch TV and got my first score Eagles 3.6 to Melb 3 pts. Oh yeah doing well Then it was 9.9 to 5 pts and I thought ,goodnight Collingwood The WA Police issued a missing persons report on Twitter for the Melbourne team at three quarter time. That said it all. Well done the Eagles,so proud. That Eagles fan who set off driving to Victoria three days ago knew what she was doing Simpson in his press conference was asked if he was pleased that Richmond wasn't there to face in the GF. Not a question,he said. Tells you a lot about his single-mindedness.

The West Coast Eagles have enjoyed one of the most comfortable Preliminary Final wins in living memory after thumping the Demons by 66 points at Optus Stadium in Perth. The temptation was to write the simplest and most succinct match report of all time and summarise the action into one line. They smashed 'em! To do so would be disrespectful to the entire season that the Demons put together and the embarrassment of today wasn't what any football fan was hoping for leading into the game. The match was a one way street from beginning to end. Without a goal in the first term, the Demons had slumped to a 29 point deficit by the first change. Their work by foot was poor and the less said about the efficiency of their handballs the better. The Eagles were close to perfect, capitalising on any Demon errors and hitting the scoreboard as a result. If anyone thought the second quarter might prove a leveller, how wrong they were to be and the Eagles took a 63 point lead into the long break with the Demons still yet to find a goal. The second half was a much tighter affair yet it meant nothing in the context of the entire game. Bravely battling away late in the game means little after a team fails to find the ball when it really matters. Melbourne did manage to finds numerous goals in the third quarter, yet the Eagles didn't stop scoring and still held a 61 point lead at the final change. The fourth term was nothing more than a party for the fans. The noise was enormous and tickets for next weekend became the dominant thought of the members. In the end it was a 66 point margin for a side that will enter the grand final will equal confidence to Collingwood. Both clubs have produced the stunning on Preliminary Final weekend and should be commended for their efforts. Mark Le Cras, Josh Kennedy and Jack Darling were the attacking winners for the Eagles on the day yet the job done in the midfield was also astonishing. The Melbourne run was countered and with Jeremy McGovern sweeping across the back, the Demons never really found an answer to the game plan of Adam Simpson. The most telling example of that was the complete absence of Max Gawn for much of the contest. Simpson set about engaging him in contests as often as possible, in order to prevent the ruckman helping out across half back by taking uncontested marks. It worked a treat and the Eagles are off to the grand final to face the Magpies. It will undoubtedly be closer than today's game. The Demons will live to fight another day, next season, but today was all about the West Coast Eagles. Final Score West Coast Eagles 18.13 121 Melbourne Demons 7.13 55

Redden isn't average. He might not be silky like the Pendleberries et al, but he is a bulldog.

Absolutely demolished Melbourne. This WCE team will beat Collingwood, the margin will be closer, but the result will be the same.

Sick of seeing umpires giving sympathetic interpretations to the losing team. That can't be in the job description.
