Western Bulldogs number one draft pick Jamarra Ugle-Hagan makes his long-awaited debut against the Sydney Swans and idol Lance Franklin in a good old-fashioned Sunday afternoon blockbuster. Follow along with live scores on The Roar from 3:20pm (AEST) as Round 16 begins.

Perhaps not since Jack Watts has a first game been so keenly anticipated. Despite the Bulldogs’ dominant form, Ugle-Hagan’s lengthy wait for a senior call-up and extended stay in the VFL has prompted conjecture aplenty, with rumours even circulating of interest in a trade.

However, the time has finally come for last year’s top pick; and fittingly, lining up at the other end will be Swans champion, and Ugle-Hagan’s boyhood hero, Lance Franklin. The two have been compared since the Bulldog burst onto the scene with some stellar displays in junior footy… no pressure there.

The Swans thumped the Eagles last week by a whopping 92 points, while an underwhelming Bulldogs were still far too good for the last-placed North Melbourne. They’ll need to be better than that to best the Swans, who have the luxury of going in unchanged.

Some forward line is going to have to put on a blue ribbon performance to get on top of May & Lever come September.

I think this win demonstrates this year’s plan A . Apply pressure – win the ball – play with accurate quick possessions through the corridor – with maybe a tweak to use more handballs than early in the season. It’s plan B I don’t like. We saw that in the middle of the season and against Hawthorn when they reverted to old habits. Kicking down the line and bombing it haphazardly into the 50 in the hope that in his twilight Buddy has somehow turned into a pack mark.

Nearly every 50/50 call seemed to go to the Dogs this evening. An unbalanced free kick count can be an indication of one team playing poorly and giving away lots, but I didn't feel that was the case with the Swans. Certainly not when I was yelling at the umpires on my TV. Today the Swans had to beat the Dogs and the men in white. BTW, I would love to see the penalty count broken down by umpire.

Pyke was Eagles runner 1997-1998. He then coached Claremont from 1999-2000. He was an assistant coach at Adelaide in 2005/2006 and held administrative roles at West Coast, including a seat on the board of directors 2001-2004. Pyke rejoined West Coast as a strategy coach at the end of the 2013 AFL season. He was appointed coach of Adelaide in October 2015 and took them to the GF in 2017. He also had a highly successful business career. He never needs to work again. It seems that he has a passion for the game.

No it doesn’t. You’re arguing the swans should have more because the dogs did. No reason they should have the same.

Nothing. But it is indicative of the missed frees. i.e. The argument is qualitative not quantitave. It explains the (extraordinary) quantitave discrepancy,

Brisbane and dogs lose. Good week for the Cats too. May have been a very substandard game but a win is all that really matters when those around you can’t do that.

What says the count should be even?

Pies probably have a better chance as the Eagles may have had Pyke as an assistant coach and let him go years ago. I think he left the industry before returning with the Crows.

There is obviously an agenda going on whenever Sydney play the Dogs. I mean the dogs have only lost 3 free kick counts against opposition in 17 games but boy do they get a leg up against the swans. The umpires never do any favours for the swans and have a bias so it feels even better when we win.

I would love to know if the Swans have ever won a free kick number against the Dogs, I can't remember one, Ignoring of course the Dogs were playing in front

Just proves that it's more about development than actual draft picks. They've done well

Oh I don't know. Dees only seem to play poorly v average teams. When they have quality opposition they seem to really step up
