By The Roar / Editor

Carlton’s Sam Walsh won mark of the year with this courageous effort against Port Adelaide back in July.

It should of been nowhere near mark of the year, take your Carlton goggles off. It was brave but unspectacular, mark of the year should be someone up high sitting on a pack and taking a speccy grab.

Charlie Dixon's one handed mark was so much better than this. Wasn't just a regulation one handed mark either. The fact that he was falling to the ground when he caught the ball was more so deserving of Mark of the year

All I know is that every single ghost comment has a reply of clown. This must go way back. And I keep forgetting who posts it.

Classic Ghost. Why are you commenting then? How about you go away and not count 1981 to 2017 and be careful you don't fall out you're premiership window.

Who cares who wins mark and goal of the year? All this debate about nothing. They are individual awards. Premierships are the only things that count.

For Once in my life I agree with Kane Cornes. I think they got both Goal of the Year and Mark of the Year Wrong. I think Cripps goal was Goal of the Year. And for me Bobby Hill’s was Mark of the Year.

“How many marks in this video would you say aren’t as good as Walsh’s.” How many of those marks are chest marks? How many got as high? How many took the hit Walsh took? By the time you weed out those ones you aren’t left with many. “The way he was hit after made it look better.” That is what makes it, that collision was always going to happen and he ran flat out into it. Its like saying Cameron’s mark was made to look better because he jumped.

No doubt Conor Rozee should have won it

No surprise that Corn Kane doesn’t agree

Adding to my last comment, the mark was deserving of recognition. By being selected as mark of the week was good recognition. To be a finalist for mark of the year was massive recognition. I feel they try and put a courageous mark as a finalist each year to give a differing opinion. Ryan’s mark vs Carlton last year prob didn’t deserve to be a finalist either. Excellent mark, but by mark of the year standards , it doesn’t hold a candle to the others.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd-O59Na3Ko How many marks in this video would you say aren’t as good as Walsh’s. Walsh actually came more from the side and was directly facing the ball and jumped straight in the air. The way he was hit after made it look better. He definitely took an awesome mark, but it was a shockingly poor mark to win mark of the year

This is true. Much greater degree of difficulty with the oncoming pack. Although I am partial to a high leaping chest grab as well. Rule number 1 of flight club is to get high. Getting a bit nostalgic for "Up There Cazaly" now. There were some pretty good grabs this year despite the tedious flooding that mires the game.

And unlike most of Browns or Riewoldts he didn't end up taking a chest mark.

It looks better set to “This time I’m playing to win” as does everything. At least in this case he’s not a behemoth. Much as they rave on about J Brown and N Riewoldt going back with the flight, these were big units and generally as a much, if not more, a danger to everyone else. So it’s a fair old grab if not the most spectacular. As Macca said public voting is silly. Unless it’s compulsory. There were better goals than Daicos jnr’s as well.

Does it? How many marks each week are taken like Walsh's compared to how many marks are taken that look like the traditional speccy? "Sean whites mark was mark of the century," So it can't be mark of the year because it wasn't mark of the century? The fact is very few people could run as hard and as far and jump full bore into an on coming pack, keep their eye on the ball and their nerves under control well enough to complete an overhead mark - whether it was a better mark than some of the other contenders is a moot point to me, it was judged to be and I am happy, if one of the others was picked I wouldn't care, the main point is that this one isn't underserving.

It’s gotta be someone standing on someone’s head surely. Sean Smith’s mark was mark of the century, this was just a good brave mark

" but no showcase of acrobatic leaping" - he got higher than Powell Pepper, Jones and Dixon and if you pause the clip at the 8 second mark you can see if had "the sit" on someone he would likely and been very close to being on their shoulders. And that is after he had run a considerable distance to make the contest.

Athleticism is the branding priority surely. Anyone can be courageous and you could argue the bravest of men are the every day family dads who face up to the realities. What separates Elite AFL footballers is their level of skills. Great great mark to Walsh but no showcase of acrobatic leaping that is iconic in the game.

Depends what floats your boat courage or a good leap. I would say this, 1) we need to get rid of the public voting because it favours clubs with big fan bases. 2) We should apply what I call the Andrew Walker rule -which is basically which mark is going to be used more heavily in advertising material. Walkers 2011 over Carlisle was beaten by Andrew Krakouer but it is Walkers mark that you see in every ad
